Doubts and Presumptions - Chapter 11 - So_scarlett_maroon - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]

Neville cleared his throat, and Justin looked over. "Hey Justin, where would you go if you were taking someone out in Muggle London?"

Justin smiled. "Have a hot date?"

Neville gently set down the bubotuber he'd been carrying and wiped his brow, realizing too late he'd probably wiped dirt into his skin. "I'd like to, yeah. Where can I take her?"

Justin set down two nightshades on the warded shelf used for the most poisonous plants. He was on the shorter side and had thick, dark black hair. Like Neville, he dressed casually, in jeans and a t-shirt. His blue eyes narrowed at Neville, and it was clear he suspected who Neville wanted to take out, but he must have thought better of asking. Instead, he asked another question. "Is it serious or casual?"

Neville contemplated for a moment, "Casual, but I want it to be serious."

Justin smiled. "And the bird, is she a muggle? Or you just want to impress her with your knowledge of the muggle world?"

Neville shook his head and walked back to the truck. He could sense Justin was following behind. "She's a witch," Neville replied, trying to keep the other man from prying anymore. "Do you have a suggestion or not?"

They grabbed the last few items from the truck bed and walked back inside with them.

"Touchy about this, it seems. I don't think I've seen you ask a girl on a date since I started working with you. Wait, did Katarina finally make a move?"

Neville groaned. "You knew she had a thing for me?"

Justin stopped walking, leaving the gap between them to widen. "You didn't? Nev, my friend. That woman drools over you on the daily. How were you unaware?"

"The date is not Katarina. Now bring those Shrivelfigs over to the last table," Neville ordered.

Justin began marching to the table, his knees pulling up high and his feet stomping back on the stone floor. "Sir, yes, sir."

Neville rolled his eyes. "I don't know why I thought I could talk to you about this."

When the invitation to the International Magical Cooperation Gala arrived, Neville had been expecting it. Whenever the Ministry needed to show off in front of the other Wizarding communities, they always paraded out the war heroes. Neville was on the B team, back row to the Golden Trio of course, but invited all the same. But this event was going to be different than all of the ones before. Because Hermione would not be Ron’s date, Romilda would. He knew it would be a hard night for Hermione. He didn’t know how he could make it easier on her. She’d made it clear that babying her was not appreciated.

Neville sighed, tossing the glossy paper on to his counter. He walked across the small space to his living room. He lived in a tiny flat above his shop allowing him to always be nearby to take care of the plants. The downside was living in a place much too small for someone of his size. It also didn’t help that he’d filled much of the space with his personal plant collection. He had hanging pots with flutterby plants and squills as well as a potted fiddle leaf fig and monstera plants. He settled on the rug in front of his Floo, the leaves of the monstera pushing into his face, and called out Grimmauld place.

Harry’s boyish grin greeted him in the green glowing flames. “Hey Nev, what’s up?”

Neville pushed the monstera plant to the side, giving him room to sit. “Hey mate, have you looked through the post yet today?”

Harry shook his head. “Haven’t had the time. What came?”

“Gala invite,” he answered simply.

Harry nodded, understanding instantly. “How about you step on through? She wouldn't like us talking about this without her.”

Neville had already been down in the shop this morning, watering and pruning, so he was dressed in a deep red shirt and jeans, but he’d had no time to clean up before he’d Flooed. His nails had dirt under them and he knew he still smelled of vegetation. He supposed that was nothing new for him though, and walked through the open Floo.

Maybe she won’t go, he mused. Godric knew she deserved a reprieve. Hermione and Harry had been trotted out more than any of the rest of them. Avoiding more of that and Ron as well would be for the best.

As he stepped out he found the room empty. He assumed Harry had gone to grab the woman on both of their minds.

She walked down the stairs her tan, ankle length skirt swooshed with each step. She looked happy, calm. Possibly even glad to see him. He hated that he wasn’t here with better news.

“Hey Nev, what a nice surprise.”

He smiled back, but it must not have been very convincing. She narrowed her eyes. “What’s going on?”

Neither man responded.

Hermione spent the next few days mostly on her own. She saw Harry from time to time, but he kept strange hours as an Auror and was also spending quite a bit of time at Pansy’s. So she had plenty of time alone to work on a brew and to think.

She was a notorious over-thinker, she didn’t begrudge herself the habit. It often ended up saving her or Harry or Ron.

Ron was actually one of the many subjects playing on her mind. She wondered for about the millionth time if Romilda’s dose of Weasley’s Wheezes Love Potion from sixth year had somehow been reactivated. She knew she was better off without him. If he could leave her so easily, they hadn’t been meant to be, but it was painful nonetheless.

As she stirred the cauldron, she thought about the other two men who’d taken up residence in her mind recently. She’d long ago reconciled the fact that the sweet, kind, shy boy she’d grown up with had grown into one of the hottest men she’d ever seen. That was mostly old news. But what was new was her desire to explore that attraction. It was an odd feeling. She already loved him, as a friend, and it made her attraction that much more potent even though nothing at all had actually happened between them.

She added the snake fang powder and increased the heat of the fire.

She didn’t know if Neville could ever see her as anything other than a friend, but the other night at the club had felt like maybe he could?

Then there was Draco. He was such an enigma. He was being kind to her. That in and of itself was strange enough. But then he’d sought her out to brew him a potion that he obviously considered a sensitive subject, and asked her to dance at the club.

Hermione added the nettles.

Dancing with both of them had been… hot. Like, knicker-ruining hot. Having their attention focused keenly on her, the way they’d touched and moved with her, and then Draco had touched Neville, too! She couldn’t quite parse her reaction but she knew wanted to experience it again.

She heard the sound of the Floo and knew it must be Harry coming home. She quickly cast a stasis charm on the cure for boils (for a man allergic to horned slugs) and padded down the stairs to greet him.

He was rummaging around the kitchen looking for something to eat. “Sit, I’ll make you a cheese toastie.”

“Oh, Hi Mi.’” He was startled by her sudden appearance. He was half asleep as he stood in front of her.

“You need to get some rest,” she lectured.

He shrugged, “I mean you're not wrong, but what I’ve been doing instead has been so much more fun.”

Excerpt:

As he stepped through the Floo, Draco heard the noise he’d come to expect anytime he was in his own home: his mother’s screams echoing along the halls.

He took a moment to locate her. From the noise level, she was clearly on the first floor and not too far off. But the house was stupidly large, so he cast hominid revelios and saw she was in the tea parlor. The sounds made his heart ache but he knew what this was. He would stay calm for her.

He entered the room and saw the spilled tea and shattered porcelain. She was under the table shaking, her velvet robes draped around her. She was no longer screaming, but instead sobbing deeply, her breath shuddering with each painful cry. He rushed to her side, pulling her out from the table and settling them both on the Persian rug. He wrapped her in his arms. “I’m here mum, you’re safe.”

“Lucius, we have to make him leave. He can’t stay here. He’s going to get us killed. We have to protect Draco.” As she spoke her voice grew louder and more panicked.

He stroked her hair and whispered calmly to her. “No Mum, I’m Draco and Dad is in Azkaban. We’re safe now. They’re both gone. It’s just you and me. Come back to me, Mum.” They sat there together for a long while, Draco holding her, whispering to her that she was safe and the Dark Lord was gone.

Slowly Narcissa came back to herself. Her breathing evened out and her eyes focused on Draco’s face. “I did it again,” she said simply.

Draco gave her frail form a gentle squeeze. “It's fine, Mum. Let me help you up.” It was too easy to lift her tiny frame and guide her to the nearby settee.

She’d been having these moments of panic and loss of lucidity for a few years. They’d ignored it at first, as talking about medical issues was unseemly. Besides, there had been other things going on at the time: trials, house raids and the like. But as things settled down and they had more time, Draco had insisted on bringing in Healers to cure her.

First, they’d ruled out all sorts of hexes, curses, and poisons. Then, they began to look at more mundane ailments. She didn’t have dementia or Parkinson's or any other diseases of the mind. Eventually, they gave up and It went back to being just Draco and Narcissa.
