#august draws #dragonsong #harper hall of pern #the harper hall of pern #menolly #comics #idk how to tag this idk if anne mccaffreys work even has a fanbase on here lol. anyway #remember the 16 page comic that i had 4 weeks to complete? yeah. thsi is that one #i made the excellent decision to choose 1) a chapter that was already far along in a much larger story #and 2) something with a LOT of worldbuilding in it #so it was a real struggle to adapt Just This Section into a standalone comic and convey all the necessary information #without overwhelming the reader or obstructing the narrative #i think i did a good job tho!!#there are some drawings in here that were pretty rushed but overall i am actually really pleased with myself #i do think i would pick a different story if i had the chance to redo the assignment #but i dont regret this. i think it turned out beautifully #that being said. god. idk if im gonna keep using this style for comics #it looks awesome but its SO high effort #a lot of my professors and fellow classmates have told me they really enjoy my thick-pixel-brush-sketchy style #and i might just do that for my thesis #(more polished than what ive been posting for. say. the blacksmiths apprentice)#(but ive done cool things with that style . i LIKE that style. i wanna work with it more!!)

My design of Menolly!

It’s kind of disappointing how all the covers I’ve seen have made her this conventionally attractive young lady, when she’s described as being a gangly, awkward teen who gets mistaken for a boy.

She’s grown into herself much more by DragonDrums, and becomes a teasing older sister figure to Piemur. She still looks unconventional, as Jaxom tells us in The White Dragon, but she carries herself with confidence. She’s mentioned to be wearing a tunic and pants at some point in the series, so I ran with that. It’s also mentioned that she keeps her hair short so that it’s easier to wear her helmet, which I attempted to put under her arm (ignore that abomination)

WHY IS MY GIRL MIRRIM DONE SO DIRTY?

In Dragonsong, she’s a prickly but kind and devoted healer, and Menolly’s first friend her age.

In dragondrums, she’s annoying and obnoxious, and other characters keep commenting on how she’d be cute if she wasn’t like that. But menolly convinces everyone else that she’s really good deep down, and she also is a woman with a FIGHTING DRAGON, which causes conflict.

In The White Dragon, she is obnoxious, whiny, bigoted, and throws a hissy fit whenever she isn’t given attention.

WHY DID THEY DO THIS TO MY GIRL??? I WANT A WHOLE SERIES ABOUT HER DEFYING THE ODDS IN A MALE DOMINATED FIELD, BEING INSPIRED AND CHEERED ON BY MENOLLY
