The thud of Kilgharrah's landing rattled his bones, and Arthur swept snow from his shoulders as the wind settled once more. It was only when the silence lingered that he looked up, surprised. He would have bet the contents of his coin purse that Kilgharrah would have been smug and cryptic in equal measure, happy to revel in his knowledge and deprive them of its gift. Now, he realised his mistake. The Great Dragon had no rock on which to perch, but even if he did, it would make no difference. Anyone with eyes could see that Merlin was the bigger of the two of them. Yet that was not the only difference. Arthur had to step back to get a better look, easing out from where he and the knights were sheltered in the shadow of Merlin's chest. A very quiet grumble of disapproval rolled in Merlin's throat, but he did not protest or block Arthur's path. It did not take long for Lancelot and the others to follow him, which was probably for the best. Not a word had been uttered, but the air practically crackled with things unspoken. It felt like a tavern just before someone threw the first punch. Kilgharrah, for his part, seemed to realise he had made some sort of mistake. He pressed his body low to the ground, shielding his vulnerable belly. Nor did he meet Merlin's eye, as if he feared that might be taken as a challenge. Not that Arthur could blame him. He would not wish to rouse Merlin's ire, either. He was... magnificent. There really was no other word for it. It was not just the inky glimmer of his scales, black and blue and green like a starling's wing. It was the sharp intelligence in that blue gaze and the subtle sense of power that seemed to hum in the air.

Prompt:
When fighting the dragon, Arthur’s last attack strikes true. Rather than swiping Arthur aside, the dragon rears back in agony, and falls to the ground.
Since there were no more dragons, and Merlin had not yet completed his destiny, nor had he come into his full power, as his last act, Kilgarrah breathes on Merlin, the last of his kin, sharing his magic - an act that Arthur witnesses, but is unable to stop.
Kilgarrah dies, and Merlin screams for help, for Arthur, as black scales begin erupting from his skin.

Arthur calls him a daffodil and Merlin laughs. “You look like a startled stoat,” Arthur complains, and Merlin glances sidelong at him with eyes that look strangely yellowish in the sun. “You’re such a girl’s—” “—Blouse, I know,” Merlin says, and grins, canines glinting wickedly in the low light of the fireplace. i adore dragon!merlin so much you don’t understand. and everyone’s characterisations in this fic is really well done.
3. After the Blood Rain by sam_i_am_writes
Court Sorcerer Merlin turns into a cloud and rains blood upon the enemies of Camelot to avoid bloodshed. Unfortunately, he has trouble turning back into a person afterwards and has to endure Arthur's angry rant about his recklessness in cloud-form. Concerned ranting and fluff ensue.
