Sitting on the roof by yourself in the still of the night had proven to be a good idea. It brought you some much needed peace and quiet, which couldn’t come at a better time. Your last couple of days had been crazy and it felt you were constantly surrounded by people, which only made you crave some alone time more and more. That’s why you had decided that the roof was a good option. No one was lightly to follow after you.
You shivered lightly as a cold breeze swept by you, rustling some of the leaves. The only think you’d forgotten was a jacket, and you weren’t about to go back inside and grab, risking getting caught. You knew someone was probably already suspicious as to where you’d sneaked off to, but you weren’t too bothered.
“It’s a little chilly to be out here, isn’t it?” you didn’t even have to turn around to know that Steve had found you. Out of all the people in the world it could have been, you were glad it was Steve, who just happened to be the object of your affection. You didn’t turn around as he came over and sat down next to you. Before you could say anything, Steve draped your jacket around your shoulders, “all better.”
“Not only are you everyone’s hero,” you laughed quietly, “you’re my own personal hero.”
“Just doing my job,” he laughed as he scooted closer to you and you instinctively put your head on his shoulder. Just friends the two of you swore to everyone, but you both knew it wasn’t just that, “I saw you slip out, and I had a feeling this is where you might have ended up.”
“You know me too well,” you laughed lightly as you stared at the stars in the glittering night sky, “it was all getting a little overwhelming today. I just needed a little bit of time by myself.”
“Oh,” he seemed taken aback for a moment, “do you want me to...”
“No,” you grabbed onto his arm and made sure that he stayed by your side, “you’re always welcome, Steve. I only make exceptions for you.”
“I’m honored,” he chuckled as he let out a long wistful sigh and followed your line of site, studying the sky as well, “oh! Look, a full moon!”
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” you asked quietly as you tried your best to take a mental picture of the moment: the sky, Steve, and how perfect he felt next to you, “I love moments like this. It’s so quiet, and everything seems alright, even if it’s just for a little while. I wish we got to experience more of this.”
Steve gave you a small hum of approval as he moved his hand closer to yours, fingers lightly brushing and sending a jolt of electricity through your whole body. You didn’t know what it was, or why, but you felt a sudden burst of courage and and put your hand on top of his, giving it a light squeeze. It was just a small gesture, but it felt terribly intimate and you both knew what it meant.
“You know,” he started, trailing off slight as he seemed to be searching for the right words. He suddenly seemed nervous, giving off more of a pre-serum Steve vibes rather the confident man that he was now, “I...ugh, never mind. it’s silly.”
“What, Steve? You know you can tell me anything,” you insisted quietly, giving him a gentle nudge. A smile spread across his face, lighting up his features and making your heart melt, “come on, out with it.”
“I...ugh, promise you won’t laugh?” he seemed sheepishly and a blush rose into his cheeks.
“Scout’s honor,” you insisted, giving him a small salute.
“You said the moon is beautiful and I... you’re beautiful. uh, u-um i mean the weather. It’s beautiful. Not that you’re not beautiful, because you are. I’m just gonna shut up,” his soft features turned a deep crimson and you were pretty sure your jaw hit the floor. It wasn’t like you were totally oblivious to the fact that he might have, probably did have, feelings for you, but to hear it coming from his lips was an entirely different feeling.
“Steve,” you moved over so you were sitting in front of him. You out your fingers under his stubbled chin and turned his head so he was facing you, “d-do you mean it?”
“Of course,” he insisted, a nervous expression on his face, “I’ve felt...very strongly about you for a long time, Y/N. I just am not always great with these types of things. In case you forgot, I don’t exactly have the best track when it comes to women. But I do know that I really, really like you.”
“Well that’s a relief,” you let out a long breath that you hadn’t realized you’d been holding in, a smile so large stretching across your face, you were sure it might split, “because I really, really like you. Obviously. I think we’ve both know, haven’t we?”
“I think so,” he agreed, biting his lip anxiously, “now, stop me if this is too forward, but would it be alright if I kissed you?”
“Yes,” you almost shouted with excitement as you leaned forward, leaving a minute distance between the two of you, “you have no clue how long I’ve been wanting to kiss you.”
Steve didn’t respond verbally, but instead pulled you into his lap and putting his hand on either of your face, running his thumb over your cheekbone. It was only a few seconds before he crashed his lips onto yours, and you practically melted into his touch. It was soft and gentle, but it was perfect. You couldn’t have imagined a better kiss, and the two of you just stared at each breathlessly, grins on your faces.
“Can we do that some more?” you asked quietly, “you know, since practice makes perfect.”
“Absolutely,” he agreed eagerly, “it might take a while, but hard work pays off after all.”
“I look forward to the payoff!”
