August 24th, 1921

It has been about a month since I've started seeing the Fields family. Miss Fields has been recovering from her recent separation from her husband. It has been slow and steady work but she is a strong woman and I have no doubt that she life can only get better from here.

However, her little boy worries me. He is a sweet child and very well mannered but I feel as if he is not being polite because that is his nature.

The more I see him and his mother interact the more I can tell that he is either being kind out of hatred or he is trying to be optimistic for his mother's sake.

I've asked Miss Fields if I could start seeing the boy as well and she seemed relieved by the offer. She talked about how distant he had been growing and all her worries about him. I assured her that I would do everything I can to help Shiloh.

May 17th, 1967

Today a bright young man walked into my office. He has a very warm and cheerful disposition and spoke very politely as he introduced himself. He said his name was Shiloh Fields and that he was a college student.

Shiloh looked to be in his early 20′s. He was slightly taller than average and had dark brown curls and soft misty grey eyes. He was sensibly dressed in a suit that was a soft shade of brown and wore a fashionable hat that matched his outfit. 

At first I didn’t recognize him but I had known Shiloh a long time ago. He and his mother had just moved to California and he had been struggling to adjust so they came to me. He had been my client for quite some time but after he graduated from high school he cancelled our meetings.

I was pleasantly surprised to see him today and how he’s changed. When he was a boy he was a very compulsive liar. At first I had simply labeled it as a defense mechanism but the longer I had gotten to know him the more I believed otherwise. His habit of lying did start as a defense mechanism but it had clearly become more of an addiction by the time he had first come to me.

He was strange because he never tried to make it look like he was telling the truth. He would go out of his way to be very obvious about it. No matter how good the lie was all you had to do was look into his eyes to know that he wasn’t telling the truth.

As I talked with him Shiloh seemed very genuine. His eyes didn’t give away any hints as he talked about how good he was doing in school and about how his life was going.  I am trying not to be negative and believe that he has outgrown his bad habits but I can never truly know with him. 

He said that he wanted to start having therapy sessions again and that he planned to visit me. We agreed on a time and talked a bit longer before parting ways.
