That's a wrap on downrigging!
Most of the crew will go their separate ways now. But a couple of us are going to stay for another month of maintenance. There are a few winter projects that still need to get done.

History Weekend!

Happy Tuesday, and Happy Almost Halloween!
This weekend was a lot of fun for me, I started out my weekend after history on Friday working at the Custom House. Until I have my script memorized I am working as a guest greeter, which is pretty nice. I finally got to begin doing some more work with that.
This past weekend there was a lot going on. In Chestertown the last weekend of October there is a festival called “Downrigging Weekend. During this fesitval, historic schooners from all around the country dock in Chestertown’s port and are available for people to ride on. It is really awesome, here are some photos of the beautiful festival.
One of the ships on display is indigenous to Chestertown, the Schooner Sultana. You can visit it year round, and a sail on it is offered as a Pre-Orientation program!

Lucky for anyone who is a friend, volunteer, or intern for the Starr Center the staff invites all to go on a sail yearly! This year Starr Center students were invited to sail the Schooner Virginia, which was followed by a dinner in the Custom House. The Virginia I sailed on was a reproduction of a ship that sailed from 1917-1926 and was built to train Pilots in navigation and seamanship. A reproduction was built between 2002-2004 in Norfolk and is now used as an experiential learning platform. Here are some photos of her!

I learned the story of Lucy the Goose this weekend too. Lucy was a local goose who was loved by residents of the town. When she died, it was such a big deal that she was given a funeral service, and this statue by the waterfront was dedicated to her. This is just proof of the quirkiness of Chestertown that I love so much!

Aside from seeing the boats, and riding on the Virginia I also volunteered with the History Society and gave campus ghost tours. That was a lot of fun, I learned a new part of the College’s history I did not know before! Middle Hall also every year offers a haunted house that is a lot of fun to go through. It is a nice simple way to get in the Halloween spirit!
