Rose’s question seemed to come from nowhere, really. It had only been a few days since Steven had been born, and Rose had spent the majority of her time... watching him. Everything he did fascinated her. He was so small... so full of life and she had helped make him. Yet... Rose was unsure how well she would do. Motherhood was not natural for gems. She could love, and feel love, but she wasn’t certain she had this... ‘motherly instinct’ she had heard of. Gems weren’t supposed to have children, so why would they need it? Rose was a leader, she was a soldier and she had fought battles and commanded an army. The battlefield was easy territory for her. This... This was difficult.

Ruby simply stared at the other gem (the other gems?) for a while- quite longer than socially acceptable, I might add- before approaching them. Even then, Ruby couldn’t make direct eye contact with the fusion; couldn’t stop twiddling their thumbs in a failed attempt to relieve some of their anxiety. They were a little nervous around any gem that wasn’t a Ruby. Rubies understood them for the most part, even though the rest of their squad wasn’t nearly as nervous about things as they were, and although the gem before them was part Ruby, they had a harder time approaching them than they did with any of the other gems they’d met on Earth.
“Ruby? Or, uh- Sophie- No, um...” They paused giving themselves a moment to remember the fusion’s name before continuing on. “Oh! Garnet! Garnet, what’s it like being fused all of the time? And with someone who’s not a Ruby!”
