“Sir Geoffrey Merriweather” in Double Crossbones (1951)

I know Mr. O said this was “one of the worst pictures ever made” (you’re wrong sir, there were far worse), but the whole thing is rather charming with some moments of effervescence. I need to show appreciation for the utter SWAG in the “Merriweather” scenes. As phony toffy English accents go he nailed it. It breaks me up every time. The wig is outrageously beautiful as is the costume by Yvonne Wood (September 27, 1914 — January 14, 1999). The detail is truly splendid.

#Double Crossbones #Donald O'Connor #no one cares I realise that but I'm not going to stop this is for me #Anne Bonny catching him lol #the flynning #that earring #when I say this film is ridiculous I mean it in the best possible way #silly and cheesy and totally detached from reality #I've said it before and I will say it again: flawless no notes #my single complaint is that there's only one song and it's not very catchy #Davey should have sung a sea shanty with the pirates at some point come on #also his main wig situation is atrocious #it's like just some fringe pinned to his real hair??? v. non-committal attempt to give the illusion of length #but the braids with the black hat and the immaculate white ringlets go a long way to making up for this #not over that disguise #his eyes are the only thing that give it away like otherwise you would never imagine #not to drag up a tag ramble from years ago or anything but this def. emphasises once again the importance of eyebrows #the dark eyebrows and probably the eyeliner are what make him look SO different even more than the wig #yes I'm still on this ready and willing to re-litigate the lack of care taken in Loki's sequel appearances ALWAYS OKAY #my rant about $200 million movies with no continuity and shitty wigs is EVERGREEN #this is a lowish budget movie from 1950 and I'm still complaining about wigs #although they're mostly legit better than the mcu offerings AM I WRONG #the beard also makes him look older but for real it's the eyebrows that put it over

#Double Crossbones #Donald O'Connor #I don't know how to make gifs so making these was v. time consuming but I persevered bc I have to talk about this #a) this movie is amazing and has the most movie of movie pirates ever committed to celluloid #(except that they don't have West Country accents- that's the only lack- they throw in some old timey lingo but it's real weaksauce)#anyway it is a action adventure musical comedy with slapstick tapdancing and swordfighting #the plot is ludicrous and everything is very silly except the corrupt official bad guy who is kinda legit threatening #our hapless unlikely golden hearted-hero accidentally becomes a pirate lord through a series of shenanigans #eventually he enjoys it but he's gotta rescue his girlfriend from the evil governor #he fucks it up and she ends up rescuing him instead and then there's a happy ending and even more shenanigans #the jokes are cheeseball the costumes are over the top and all the pirates are hamming it up #the swordfights involve the most EGREGIOUS flynning and dance-fighting #there is straight up cartoon logic involved #so in conclusion: FLAWLESS. NO NOTES.#b) this disguise is one of the few main character disguises in cinema history that is actually convincing- he is unrecognisable #if I hadn't been spoiled by someone's blog post b4 watching this I would no joke not have known it was him until he gives it away #I fully buy even his girlfriend wouldn't clock him on sight #making it all the more funny that he gets caught almost immediately #anyway he's being hilariously ott posh and dandyish #my point was: maybe I'm seeing what I want to see but I feel like he based this on Leslie Howard in the Scarlet Pimpernel #he sounds so much like him! he does some of the same business! I want this to be true so bad #I chose to believe this is a reference/tribute

Finally tacked this to my wall after staring at it online for the last month. (No, the tacks are not piercing the 70 year old paper.) There are some creases because some idiot folded it at some point but the seller had the courtesy to send the poster rolled up in a tube.
