On October 10, 1911, the revolutionaries led by Dr. Sun Yat Sen toppled the inept Qing Dynasty in China and established the first democratic republic in Asia, the Republic of China. This republic of ours has since gone to hell and back (including an embarrassing defeat by the Communist and the subsequent retreat to Taiwan), but, IMHO, Dr. Sun's vision for a prosperous, advanced, and FREE society has been realized (at least partially) in Taiwan. I know the politics of it all is a bit murky and messy at the moment, and maybe I am on the wrong side of history here, but I don't care. In my heart and in my mind, I am extremely proud to be a citizen of such a country, whether or not the rest of the world recognizes it as such and whether or not anyone else thinks so.
Happy Birthday to you, ROC!
