@dorano121 asked for “may your memory never fade” in Viking-age Old West Norse and asked that I choose what runes to use (I used “West Norse younger futhark”).
There are two ways to read “your” because Old Norse differentiates singular (”thou”) and plural “you,” so I’ll do both. There is also some ambiguity from the word “memory,” because it can mean “faculty for remembering” or also “remembrance (of you by others),” however both of these are covered by the word minni (though minning would be more common for the latter meaning). I’m tempted to use minnka as the verb because of the similarity to minni, but I don’t thinks it’s just off-center on the intended meaning.
Singular “your” (”thy”):
aldregi dvĂni minni Ăľitt
altriki.tuini.mini.Ăľit
Plural “your”:
aldregi dvĂni minni yðvart
altriki.tuini.mini.uĂľuart

*drops in* DOMINO SQUAD YOU SAY well I'm breaking out the time travel AU for this one b/c I love it, but basically Echo+Rex+Ahsoka+a few other clones fight the Empire, die, and go back in time to pre-Clone War era. Echo, at first, is A Big Confusion but he's also a big bad ARC trooper (and triple amputee/ex-POW but shh) in a dorky 12-year-old body so he's all kinds of Experienced and immediately takes charge because These Are His Vod'ika Now Thanks, but his no-nonsense I-know-best attitude (1/?)
gets on Hevy’s nerves like hella, which makes him petty and irritating, which makes Cutup try to defuse the tension and suddenly we’re back to square one, but Echo notices this time and tries to fix it. It kind of works, but Hevy’s still a snippy outcast and finally he and Echo go head-to-head because both of them are absolutely convinced they’re right. Echo finally loses his temper, which is shocking enough, and starts snarling that he’s trying to help, dammit, do they want to end up shot (2/?)
in their first battle or blown to pieces or drugged up and murdered or left for dead and captured by Seps and used to kill your brothers - and then echo stops, because he realizes that he’s been listing their actual fates, and they’re all staring at him like they’ve never seen him before. Fives is the first to speak, trying to comfort and seeking answers at the same time, but Echo is gone already and too fast for them to catch (he’s an ARC trooper, they’re just cadets). (3/?)
Echo’s panicking, he thinks he’s ruined everything and he’s terrified his brothers will hate him now, so he comms Rex because it’s the only thing he can think to do. Rex manages to calm him down and talk to him (while simultaneously on the line to Ahsoka, explaining the situation via space-text). They have a plan. Echo finally goes back to his squad, successfully avoiding Kaminoans on the way (again, ARC trooper) and Domino is relieved to see him back in one piece. So is 99, by the way. (4/?
Echo leads them to a place he knows is free of bugs and manages to eke out some kind of lie, because he doesn’t think they’ll believe the time-travel thing, but they all know something’s up. Unfortunately, they have no idea what, but they all agree to follow Echo’s direction from now own, because clearly he knows something. Domino’s ranking skyrockets, as you’d expect when you have an ARC trooper in the ranks, but Bric is still an asshole and Echo bitches about him constantly. So does everyone else.
ANYWAY, fast-forward to the Kamino episodes. Echo’s worrying himself sick over Rex, Ahsoka, and the others, since they’re out fighting without him, and Domino’s performance is slipping since the others have gotten too reliant on him. Bric and El-les take Echo off the squad for a while, to see how the others will respond, and Domino predictably plummets. Bric calls Cutup out to an empty hangar, like he does in canon, but here Echo follows him, sees him punch Cutup, and shoots him on reflex. (6/?)
Cutup is horrified, but Echo throws Bric’s corpse in the ocean and nobody’s any the wiser. Shaak Ti might be but she knows Something Is Up and says nothing. Cut to Rishi, where Echo’s true badassery comes out - Echo recognizes what’s about to happen before it does, switches outside-duty with Nub, and fights off the commando droids long enough for everyone else to fortify the base. Echo gets tossed off the bridge, but is relatively unhurt and waits for Rex and Cody to arrive. (7/?)
Rex is delighted to see him, they banter like old friends, everyone else is confused. They mop the floor with the commando droids and nobody has to die (at least on Rishi). (8/8)
THANK YOU FOR THIS, I really enjoyed reading it! I love that Echo is the main character here, he deserves it.
Is there are Star Wars creature that's able to track via Force-impression (or a common Jedi ability aside from the thing Quinlan Voss could do)? I have a character who needs to be found by the mains, but he's unconscious at the time and doesn't have a locator of any kind.
It seems likely to me that loth-wolves would be able to track a person through use of the Force, but of course they are rare and live only on Lothal, as far as we know. If that works for you, I’d say it’s the best option. Most animals that can use or sense the Force use it for hunting or self-defence, and those which hunt with it are generally not friendly to other Force-users. I would suggest the muttamok, a semi-sentient sort of monkey that is capable of accessing the Force. While I don’t believe they’ve ever been known to track a person down, they do have telepathic abilities and are generally pretty friendly. Give their Wookieepedia page a read if you like. I think they would probably be your best option.

There was a girl at Elsewhere once, they called her RánaĂ. She was a music major who loved the old places of the world with all her heart. She sang to the crows and wrote music to play outdoors. She drew attention, and she responded as best she could. She left offerings outside the door, mixed iron dust into her nail polish and lipstick, set thick salt lines around herself and her possessions, and every movement clinked with iron pieces hidden under her clothes.
She was careful, so careful. She had to be.
Ránaà was a student of the Forbidden major. She attended every possible meeting, wearing a steel bucket over her head with eyeholes cut out. It was iron enough for belief to make up the difference. Ránaà wanted to speak to the Gentry – not in English, nor even in Irish, the language of their old haunts. She wanted to speak to the Gentry as the Gentry spoke.
So she made a deal.
She went into the forest one night, with her bucket on her head and her clothes laden with nails and washers and salt packets.
She came back, and no one understood her.
The sounds that issued from her mouth blackened her tongue and shriveled her teeth. Those who listened felt their ears burn – then blister – then bleed.
RánaĂ’s teachers stopped calling on her. She stopped coming to class. Her roommate reported her missing a week after that. Sometimes, if you go too deep into the forest, you will hear snatches of impossible sounds that make your ears burn. Turn back – the years have not been kind, and she knows where you are now. Unless you have Favor, only the mockery of the crows can save you from the Singer.
How would a child, teenager, or other sufficiently young adult be affected by having to live in a warzone, assuming they aren't made into child soldiers, if they had to learn to fight to keep themselves safe? As in, no one forced them to pick up a gun, but they didn't feel like they had another option aside from dying?
Check out this amazing post by @howtofightwrite on this topic!
Hi AuntScripty! I have a question about comas - if a person is extremely exhausted (hasn't slept in two or more days, let's say) and is knocked out - would they go to sleep? As in, if their brain was already trying to get them to sleep, and they were knocked out in a way that would NORMALLY only cause brief unconsciousness (a minute, maybe, or less) would the brain make them sleep even after coming out of the coma/unconscious state? Sorry if this isn't clear, I'm not sure how to phrase it.
I think you’re on to a good point, and it is realistic for a character to fall asleep when they’re exhausted and have just been given a physical insult like a blow to the head, but there are some significant differences between sleeping from exhaustion and coma.
People can be woken up from exhaustion-sleep by calling their names or providing deep painful stimuli (like a pen across the nail bed, twisting the skin above the clavicles, and more--and yes, we do this as part of a neuro responsiveness check). They’re unconscious while they sleep, but not so much comatose; they can be woken, interviewed, and allowed to go back to sleep. A comatose person cannot simply be woken in this manner.
I think any situation in which your character gets hit upside the head hard enough to cause a loss of consciousness is a situation that’s going to cause an adrenaline surge, which will cause them to wake up after the incident. In fact, if you’re going to differentiate this, please have it go something along the lines of “gets hit in head, wakes up on the ground, considers getting up, decides getting up is too much work and they’re too tired, goes to sleep.”
Please also consider giving your character symptoms of a concussion/mild TBI (which is defined by a head injury with unconsciousness lasting less than 30 minutes). Some issues you may want to include might be:
drowsiness
disorientation
short-term memory issues
problems focusing
dizziness, headache
Post-concussion syndrome may last a few days or as long as a few weeks, with limited cases lasting into years.
What I’m trying to get at is, I really dislike seeing are head injuries with no consequences for the injured character.
So I think as long as you make sure it’s clear that your character goes to sleep (after a period of waking up) rather than remains comatose, and has some form of cognitive or neurological issues, even if only for a few days, after the event.
Thanks for taking the time to write in! I hope this was useful for you.
xoxo, Aunt Scripty
