My experience at Moshing and the Social expectations at events with it.

Let's start off with-

What do people mosh to?

People most often mosh to Scream metal or Doomsludge music, which can be categorized by a ton of very loud screaming and harsh drums.

What is Moshing?

Moshing is an extreme style of dancing where people run,push,or hit each other usually through the act of erratic and quick movements like flailing your arms into a circle or doing different flips in the mosh pit.

What is a Mosh pit?

A mosh pit is a area near the band or stage where moshing is permitted. This area is often not physically marked and is often just a circle of people.

Why do people mosh?

Moshing is a fun activity usually used yo get out whatever pent up feelings you currently have in you. Whether your excited,sad,mad,or scared, moshing is a way to express that

Why can moshing unsafely cause harm?

While the point of moshing isn't to get hurt, it's very often a side affect of it. However because people aren't usually trying to hurt you, as long as you stay in your space and respect other people you should be good.

What are the 'Moshing rules'?

There aren't specifically rules but here's essentially the expectations.

-Don't purposely try to hurt people. We're here to have fun. Not get sent to the ER.

-Don't hit people outside of the mosh pit. While it's usually accepted to jump into the people who create the circle (the people with the front most view of the moshing) you should NOT run into the crowd and body slam someone even if you know them. This can cause harm to the person and others. Not to mention the venue.

-ABSOLUTELY NO GROPING. Do not touch people where you know you shouldn't.

These are basically the most basic rules.

But Hallow, you may ask, how do I enjoy a doomsludge/scream/metal concert if I don't want to mosh?

Well my dear friend, know moshing isn't for everyone! It can be dangerous, and if you can't take the pain, don't even risk it. You can usually stand on nearby tables or in the back of the circle and still have fun!
