wilson has spent his life being a people pleaser, he changes his personality to suit the person he’s dating to the point where he represses his real self so much that he becomes miserable in the relationship. because of this, every relationship he’s ever been in has failed.

amber has spent her whole life masking, she is haunted by her past and so uses a facade of aggression and confidence to hide how she truly feels about life. in doing so, she pushes people away because they just think she is shallow and mean when in reality its just a coping mechanism.

then they meet each other.

wilson starts to change his personality, he chooses the mattress that amber wants so she will like him more. amber stops him. she tells him he needs to be his own person and stop trying to please her or else the relationship will fail like the others. she tells him he needs to look after himself rather than spending his entire life trying to be selfless all the time.

amber continues to wear the facade, she still holds a grudge against house and the team for taking her job. wilson stops her. he tells her she has to start opening up and stop pretending to be someone she’s not just so no one can read her. he knows that the “cutthroat bitch” she makes herself out to be is just a character she plays, a character she pretends is immune to the comments people make about her personality, he even defends her to cuddy and house.

so they both begin to change. wilson starts doing things that he wants rather than to please other people, he doesn’t break up with amber despite the mass amounts of opposition, he chooses the waterbed that he wanted (even if he realised he didn’t actually like it). amber starts becoming more like herself again, she starts to sort problems out in a mature way rather than an aggressive way. she talks to the team again (even gets asked out by kutner) and starts trying to unmask who she pretends to be.

and then one night wilson is called into the hospital, he doesn’t wanna leave amber home alone but he remembers that she doesn’t need looking after and he doesn’t need to be selfless all the time. shes a grown adult who can take care of herself, so he goes on-call.

that same night amber gets a call from house, hes drunk and needs picking up. she doesn’t like house at all and wants to shout at him aggressively on the phone for getting so wasted but she remembers what wilson said – she needs to stop playing this vicious mean character and start to be more selfless, so she goes to pick him up.

only a day later are they on that hospital bed, amber dying in wilson’s arms. a freak accident that never would’ve happened if they hadn’t have met each other, that never would’ve happened if they hadn’t became better people. amber died a good person, but could’ve lived if she carried on a bad one. wilson lost the one person who he wouldn’t change himself for, but she could’ve lived if he had.

so yeah they ultimately made each other better people, but the universe would’ve never worked that way. the only way amber could’ve lived is if she hadn’t met the one person willing to see beneath her mask, the one person that saw her for who she truly was.
