I was only asleep for maybe 20 minutes when my phone and the tornado sirens started going off around 12:30 last night. With the way that things are in the house right now, there really wasn’t anywhere to go to for safety. Fortunately, the tornado was well north of us. Still, I was practically holding my breath as I watched the news last night. I couldn’t feel myself breathing again until they’d tracked it past Lebanon, TN.
When I wasn’t focused on the news, I was trying to hear what was going on outside. I barely heard 10 notes from the wind-chime outside my window, I couldn’t hear any rain or hail, and even though the sky was lit up like the 4th of July, I never heard a single roll of thunder. Even before the meteorologist talked about the strength of this thing, I knew that it was bad, just from how fucking quiet it was.
They kept referencing the tornado from 1998 as they discussed the strength of last night’s tornado. I kept feeling a knot in my chest whenever they did that, because my friends and I had just casually mentioned that tornado at one point in our conversation yesterday. It’s a devastating coincidence. It also made me realize just how fucking lucky we were to be out of it’s path. I remember that tornado very well.
