Rahsaan performing at Howard Theatre
Rahsaan Patterson performed at the historical Howard Theatre and there was a packed house. The evening was perfectly set by the mood of his music and sultriness of his voice as he performed. Every chair and table was occupied with dedicated lovers of Rahsaan’s music.
In his recording career he has created a series of wonderful songs that cross the easy listening jazz, gospel and UAC genres. Rahsaan (who began singing in the choir at age 6) was named after jazz saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk where he grew up in a musical family, with Stevie Wonder, Rufus, Miles Davis and Earth Wind & Fire regularly playing and being an influence. These sounds along with the music of the church influenced his love of multiple styles of music and it showed.
Rahsaan Patterson began a successful songwriting career, working with Tevin Campbell, Jody Watley and Brandy. In 1997, he released an album boasting melodic material like “My Sweetheart,” “Where You Are” and “Joy” as well as ballads such as “Tears Ago.” He returned two years later with Love In Stereo, an album with notable cuts, such as “Treat You Like a Queen” and “Get Here.” Over the next five years, Rahsaan Patterson continued to sing and write for other artists, including jazz artists Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson and Jimmy Sommers, as well as movie soundtracks.
Rahsaan Patterson returned on the young U.K.-based Dome label in early 2004 with After Hours. It was released in the US in October, 2004. Afterwards, he followed up with the tour de force, Wines and Spirits, a great album that showed him to be at a creative force. It won the SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award for Best Album and was a hit around the world. In 2008, Patterson issued a moderate surprise: a funky, very enjoyable holiday album, The Ultimate Gift. He followed it three years later with the more experimental bleuphoria, which turned out to be another hit that earned him a SoulTracks award.
If you haven’t seen Rahsaan Patterson perform, then you are missing something special. His voice and peformance is phenomenal and you will enjoy every moment.
