Several Sentence Sunday
Here is a snippet from a Smallville AU I am working on because of my conversations with the lovely and talented @clois4ever30 (who I am also tagging for Several Sentence Sunday).
Here’s the thing about being in a relationship with a woman who is mute: you can’t really talk in the car. Even after putting more effort into learning American Sign Language than you have ever put into anything in your entire life, even after reading your sign dictionary until its spine cracks and you’re blue in the face, you can’t talk to her while driving. You can speak, technically, at any point and she can sign fully if her hands aren’t busy with the steering wheel—but then you can’t see her response without looking away from the road. Either situation is primed for a head-on collision and an early grave, so you just don’t really talk while you’re driving. It’s a lesson Tommy has had to learn the hard way. In the last twelve hours he has managed maybe twenty minutes of actual conversation with his wife. Most of it has been in a variety of gas station parking lots while she keeps a lookout for cops while he fills up the tank. They keep these visits short and sweet. No snacks, no souvenirs, no talking to anyone they don’t have to. Bathrooms and gas are all they can afford, both in time and money. In the car, Tommy fills the silence with idle chatter and singing along the radio. All while keeping a white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel, terrified he’s going to misread a sign or see those red and blue lights in the rearview mirror. So not. He can’t talk with his wife. But that doesn’t mean they can’t communicate.

What do you think about Tommy changing his last name to Roe once he and Phin get married?
Oh, that is 100% the plan. :D I've already had such a fun time planning their wedding.
WIP Wednesday
So. I binged through Dispatch in a weekend, and now I have an idea for yet ANOTHER Dolphin and Tommy AU. They're both in the Phoenix Program, and the boss just announced that whoever's the lowest performing hero is getting cut from the team.
“I need this job,” Tommy gulps down another mouthful of beer. “And I know everyone’s saying that but I really need this job.” The Atlantean’s black eyes flick over towards the other swing. She sits down before he can interpret whatever look she gave him. Scaly hands grip the chains of the swing set, those black, razor-sharp claws retracted back into short fingernails. “Me too.” That stupid fucking robot voice drones into his earpiece. “Please, like you’re in any danger of getting cut.” He looks at the bottle--crap, he's got less than half a beer left. Tommy rocks back on his heel, pushing the swing back slightly. “2.5 subscriber satisfaction score.” “The hell are you talking about? You hit like a truck, you don’t shit talk the dispatcher, and I once saw you get hit by a grenade launcher and fucking walk it off." “I don’t smile.” “That is—completely believable, actually.” Tommy taps the beer bottle against his thigh. “And fucked up.”

Alright, been taking a break from this but let's get back to it! Here is a snippet from chapter 5 of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" aka 'let's rewrite season 1 of Arrow so Oliver isn't in the special boy in the center of the universe, and therefore Laurel can answer the very important question of "girl what the fuck did you see in that guy???"
The white-haired woman cracks another crab leg. Looks Laurel up and down for a moment. “Can I ask a personal question?” “Shoot.” “What did you like about Oliver? When you were dating?” Laurel lets out a breath, staring down at her drink. “I liked his passion, his charisma, the way he made me laugh…also the dates at fancy restaurants and expensive birthday gifts were a plus.” She would never admit it to anyone else but Phin, not even with a gun to her head. Laurel stirs the ice in her cup with a straw. “I should have known better. Looking back it’s so clear his attention was drifting elsewhere, even before Sara. He never took anything seriously either.” “Why not break up?” Phin signs, before dabbing the side of her mouth with a napkin. A long drink of iced tea to gives Laurel time to think. “I always thought that I was the exception. That I could…fix him, I guess.” She looks back at her best friend’s face. “Why do you ask?” “Thinking about something Lisa told me. Why she and her husband split. He was unreliable.” “And you’re thinking about you and Tommy?” Laurel guesses. Phin doesn’t contradict her, popping a coconut shrimp into her mouth. “Did something happen? Are you thinking about breaking up with him?” The salvage diver shakes her head. “No.” The tips of her fingers coming down hard is enough to convey genuine denial. “Tommy is my only boyfriend. Sole data point.”

Quentin Lance’s perspective is so hilarious in Poor Unfortunate Souls. This man decides to go out to the boonies to help local PD investigate a hit and run. Sounds simple. Sounds like a perfect distraction from his ongoing divorce proceedings and the existential dread of Sara Being Dead. (Except not really but he has no way of knowing his baby girl is kicking around with a ninja cult.) Only this case is tailor-made to his particular trauma because a young woman seems to have gotten into boat-related trouble with an idiot billionaire. The prime suspect is Tommy Merlyn, best friend of the idiot billionaire whose boat-related trouble got Sara killed.
History is repeating itself, but THIS time Quentin has someone he can blame and arrest. Perfect. The universe is handing an opportunity for some kind of closure on a silver platter.
Except, the more he investigates the more clear it becomes that the only thing Merlyn is guilty of is puking on a pretty girl at a party. Which is annoying, but Quentin can live with it.
Except the idiot trust fund baby he’s projecting his Oliver Queen issue onto keeps making moon eyes at the amnesiac girl he’s also projecting his dead daughter issues onto so this entire situation goes from an opportunity for closure to an opportunity for a stress ulcer.
Some angsty thoughts after seeing your tags on the gifset of Malcolm cutting off Tommy: The first time that Phin and Tommy get into a big argument. Phin only later remembers that Tommy was bracing himself for something ( like a blow ) and afterwards Tommy pretends that everything's fine ( even when it's not) or switches to appeasement mode around her
This is the first time she's started to connect the dots about Malcolm; before this all Tommy said was that he and his father weren't close
Oooh I love it. I love it so much!
Here’s another angsty thought: by the nature of Phin using sign language (which he was still learning) Tommy has to watch Phin’s hands a lot to understand what she’s signing to him. Which a) involves a lot of sudden hand movements which is stressful and b) isn’t standing there to take it and holding her eyes all the while which is also REALLY stressing him out. So Tommy’s brain is caught in a catch-22 where if he looks her in the eyes then Tommy will have barely an idea of what she’s signing and if he’s staring at her hands he can’t look her in the eye. Either way he is Misbehaving and that will make it worse.
Phin stops when it registers that Tommy is Scared of Her. Which of course just reads to as displeasure and has him go full appeasement mode.
You are right, that would be Phin’s first hint. On my season 1 rewatch I noticed Tommy really doesn’t mention his dad unless someone else brings it up, so I had a lightbulb moment when I realized Tommy would try to keep Malcolm and Phin as separated from each other as possible.
Love your observations!!!
So, does Phin know about Malcolm abandoning Tommy for two years when Tommy was 8? I'd think not, because Malcolm is still breathing
NOPE, Tommy has not dropped that particular bit of lore to her yet. I think Tommy’s told Phin his dad was never there for him and got distant after his mom died but he’s never come out and told her about the actual physical abandonment.
If Tommy had, all that would be left of Malcolm is a Looney Tunes style hole in the wall after Phin chucked him out of one of his office windows.
