Libeled Lady / Jean Harlow as Gladys Benton
Gladys wears this outfit for her city hall wedding (she had a full-length wedding gown for a church wedding that got canceled earlier in the film). It looks like a long, narrow, dark-colored skirt with a wrap-around blouse that fastens with a buckle. The blouse is made of some material with a sheen and a basket-weave texture, and it includes a trailing "sash" that hangs down the side of the skirt. For jewelry, she wears a pair of chunky bracelets on the same wrist.
The ensemble is topped off by a wide-brimmed hat with a dramatic white plume. At first, I thought there was a little veil on the hat, but then I decided it was just an illusion created by the shadow it cast on her face.
This film was remade ten years later as a musical, Easy to Wed; check this post to see what Lucille Ball, who played Gladys in that film, wore for the corresponding scene.
Photo of Liliane Gilbert performing Julian Wylie's musical, Round in 50 at the London Hippodrome in 1922. The story was a riff on Jules Verne's Round the World in Eighty Days. Liliane was My Lady Liqueur in the scene which took place in Italy, and lead a procession of other ladies dressed as the liqueurs of the world. The costumes were designed by Dolly Tree.
