#doing the robot

My boomer take is it greatly saddens me that younger people have started to bring back doing The Robot as a cool stylish dance. I thought we had all agreed that doing the robot was for losers who didn’t actually know how to dance. It was for people who couldn’t follow the rhythm. People who clapped on the ones and the threes, and instead of even trying to make an effort to dance like other people, they just did some weird thing that had nothing to do with the song. Now there are people online and on talent shows, whose only skill is doing a version of the robot and it’s just frying my brain a little bit because I thought we as a society had agreed to not enable these people. This isn’t interesting. It’s like people who do the Borat voice really well. We’ve decided that we’re not going to engage with these people. I just don’t really know what happened. Just like people who think it’s cool to do the Borat voice, people who think it’s cool to do the robot should not be enabled. I feel like the Internet really let me down there. Like, if you’re just such a boring mayonnaise of a straight white guy, and the only thing you can do well is the robot, yeah sure, make a TikTok channel about it, shoot your shot. My concern is that it’s not being thought of as cringe, but it’s being thought of as impressive now. That’s what makes me sad. It’s like “wow! This mayonnaise sandwich of an attractive straight white guy has so many quotes from the office! He’s so cool! I wish I was like him!” Like, no! *Smacks you with a paper towel tube.* No!
