Dog Wizard, a title that really makes you picture some guy in armor fighting a dragon

It’s a fantasy series about a young female computer programmer from the 1980s (which is when it was published) who’s pulled into another world where magic exists, but is heavily regulated and controversial. The worldbuilding is vaguely based on Regency England, and the other lead character is explicitly based on Tom Baker in Doctor Who, whom the author clearly has a little bit of a voice-crush on; it’s good stuff. There’s adventure and intrigue and angst and humor and really good character relationships, both romantic and platonic.

Hambly also wrote for the Star Trek novels in the days when those were very fan-driven, and it shows; this isn’t fanfic (Antryg is “just the Fourth Doctor but a wizard” only in the sense that he’s notionally a Tom Baker character and all Tom Baker characters are just the Fourth Doctor) but Hambly brings a lot of the virtues of fanfic along in her style. She knows that people want to care deeply about characters and want the narrative to let them do that. Hence the angst and humor and relationships you get very quickly invested in.

I also think it could spark a really interesting discussion about different definitions of narrative agency.
