We have this problem that there are no safe, fenced in areas for my dogs to run off leash on. Most of the time their recall is great so we have made trips into open spaces before but we go like once a month only because I'm terrified of letting them run free. Good recall is fine and all but it's by no means a guarantee of safety. While I'm continuing to search for a suitable place to let them off leash safely, I started experimenting with long leashes and it's been a disaster, mostly in Mariko's case because she's hyperactive and gets tangled in everything faster than you can say "kibble". As sort of a last ditch effort I figured out we could try chains instead. The idea would be to chain them to either a tree or something in the ground and stay within their reach at all times, training and playing and cuddling and having a picnic with them. No leaving unsupervised, I wouldn't even leave the reach of the chains at all and ideally we'd spend say, three or four hours each Saturday like this. I wanted to ask you guys what you think of this idea, could this work out and what things and safety concerns should I keep in mind? If this has a chance of working out at all, how do I choose the right chains and how long could I make them (this is about the dogs being able to run and play, after all)?
