Klee going on an adventure with her backpack in her arms instead of wearing it. Whatâs she keeping in there?
In which Klee (with the help of Alice) tries to get Kaeya and Diluc to reconcile.
This may or may not have a follow up
Hello folks guess what:Â
Part 2 here: Sentimental Â
Part 3 here: Shade + Homemade Lemonade
Today is an important day because Klee is on a mission.
Itâs so important that she packed her backpack before she went to bed.
When Lisa came to tuck Klee in (it was supposed to be Jeanâs turn that night, but Klee overheard her trading her place with Lisa since she was very, very busy) she made sure to leave her bag right beside the bed.
âI hope youâre not planning on sneaking out tonight, cutie.â After Lisa tucks her in tight, she lightly pinches her nose.
Klee laughs. Itâs airy, her energy for the day drained by her anticipation for the next. âDonât worry Lisa, I wonât.â
Thereâs no room for doubt. As Lisa closes the door, a last glance at the little girl proves her words true.
Back to the present, Klee dressed up as quickly as she could. If she paused for even a second, she would of realised that her socks were on backwards! However her plan left no time for idling, she needed to be out the door as soon as possible.
As always, her last step is to put on her hat, and check if Dodoco was with her. With that done, she picks up her backpack, hugging it as tightly as she can against her body, and begins her quest.
When she steps out, sheâs immediately met by Jean.
âOh! Good morning Klee. Here, let me help you put your backpack on-â
âNo!â Klee jerks, dodging Jeanâs hands. She seems to remember her manners though, so she turns to her with a bright smile. âNo thank you Master Jean, Klee can hold it.â
In order to evade any more questions (or delays, a new word Klee picked up from the Knights of Favonius), Klee rushes out the front door. In her wake she leaves a confused Jean, who only has a second to wonder whatâs going on before she hears a knight calling for her. Whatever Klee is doing, Jean can only pray that it doesnât involve arson.
Klee hops down the stairs, struggling to look past her backpack. One, two, three, she counts the steps as she goes down.
Unbeknownst to her the knights on guard watch in apprehension. One even has the heart to ask, âwouldnât it be easier if you wear your backpack Spark Knight Klee?â
Without so much as a glance, she replies âmy mom told me, no letting go until I get there.â
And with a great big hop, she gets past the stairs. The knight sighs in relief as he watches her bound away.
The closer she gets to her destination, the more her bag slides through her fingers. Itâs pretty heavy. Her small hands grow weary, but she simply readjusts her hold and continues onward.
âIâm almost there. Almost there Klee!â She cheers herself on under her breath. Her fatigue nearly gets the best of her, but with one last burst of energy she dashes towards the Angelâs share.
At long last, she gets to rest. She sets her backpack on one of the empty chairs. One free of a napping cat, that is.
Klee resists the urge to pet one. That was a piece of advice Bennett passed on to her. No petting the cats unless they come to you first. After looking at all the scratches he had, Klee could never forget it.
After a short rest, she picks up her bag once again. After looking this way and that, she makes sure the coast is clear before she runs over to the back of the building.
Finally, she gets to put her (and her momâs) plan into action!
She sets her backpack down, and with hands jittering from excitement, pulls out a blue Dodoco. It has an eyepatch, modeled after Kaeyaâs. Klee canât resist squeezing it before recalling the next part of the plan.
She echoes her motherâs words, âI will give you two very special Dodocos. One will be red like Master Dilucâs hair, and one will be blue like Captain Kaeyaâs.â Klee points a finger up, quick and commanding, with the Dodoco still in her grasp. âBut Klee will have to give the red one to Kaeya, and the blue one to Diluc, so they have to meet with each other and switch them. Klee will also leave the letter mom wrote.âÂ
Klee canât help but giggle. She remembers how sneaky she felt talking to her mom about the two. She grabs the letter from her bag, setting it down by the door. On top goes the Dodoco, holding it down so it doesnât blow away with the wind.Â
Examining her work, she steps back to pick up her backpack once again. After sheâs sure that the letter is safe, she steps back out onto the street.Â
âEveryone must be out working right now,â she smiles, âIâll be able to finish my quest.â
With a newfound vigor, she picks up the pace back to the Knights of Favonius Headquarters.
Two, four, six, she skips steps as she goes. Itâs still the same set of knights standing guard, their faces pale as they wait for Klee to trip and fall. She doesnât. Neither does she notice their concerned expressions.Â
She shuts the large door behind her, keeping one hand on her backpack at all times. Like a spy on a mission, she keeps her eye out for anyone walking around that might put an end to her plot. She sticks close to the walls, even leaning her bag against it at times.Â
Her route is practiced, and in no time she reaches Kaeyaâs office.
Just like before, she puts the letter down first. She didnât want it out in the open, so she put it by the foot of his chair. She puts the red Dodoco (whoâs face certainly matches the grumpiness of its real life counterpart) on top. With a solid pat to the head, she slinks back out of Kaeyaâs office and continues on with her day.
Her adventure went smoothly, no doubt due to the watchful eye of her mother, and Klee couldnât be happier.
As the sun eventually falls, she is once again being tucked in (itâs Albedo this time. It was supposed to be Jeanâs turn, but since Albedo had to stay in Mondstat for the night, which he rarely does, he gets special privilege). With a pat to the head, he leaves after saying goodnight.
However, Klee stays awake a bit longer. Sheâs staring up to the ceiling, a smile growing on her face. The room is aglow with the fading blue sky, and the red hues of sunset, but in her mind, sheâs imagining Kaeya and Diluc becoming friends again.
Lowkey Iâm like: clenches fist There's no such thing as perfect, there's no such thing as perfect, there's no such thing as perfe-
But ohh well. This is my first multi chapter thing anyway so uhhh cut me some slack, yeah?
Anyways Klee's plan works !!! The three of them have a picnic under the big Windrise tree <33
Klee was already sitting on the layed-out blanket an hour before noon. She was a bit tired, having to go around with her mom to set everything up, but her excitement pushed her to keep going. She had been instructed to wait there until both Kaeya and Diluc showed up. No way was she going to miss it.
It was hard work, sneaking around yesterday, and now sheâll get to wrap everything up with a picnic. Itâs almost like a surprise birthday party!
But for now sheâll have to wait. Under the shade of the old oak tree, she keeps a lookout on the path from the city.
-
Alice watches over the two brothers as they go about their days, but she doesnât push them to go to Windrise. Not yet. Hopefully this can also be a lesson of patience for her daughter.
Instead, she watches Kaeya put his paperwork aside thirty minutes before noon. He excuses himself for a long lunch break. With the letter in his hand and the Diluc Dodoco attached to his belt, he sets off.
-
After that, she appears undetected in the winery. Diluc is oblivious to how she takes note of the muddled look on his face. Rather, he continues as he was for the last 10 minutes, working slower than usual with the Kaeya Dodoco facing his desk from the door-side table. Heâs hunched over to the side, very obviously trying not to make eye contact with it.
The clock is ticking towards noon, and Alice begins to doubt whether heâd be able to make it to Windrise at the same time as Kaeya.
She decided to give him just a little nudge. With her magic, (donât look at me, I donât know how she does it) she causes the Dodoco to fall to the floor with a thud.
Just like she had hoped, it doesnât escape his notice.
He looks at it for a moment, sighs, then pushes off his desk. Curiously, he was already ready to leave. All he did was pick up the Dodoco (still with two fingers, but this time by the fur on its head) and leave.
As one last bit of help, she allows Diluc to travel faster than he would. Itâs as if she folded the very landscape to give him the same distance between him and Windrise as Kaeya does.
Then her job was done. She sends her final âgood luckâs to Klee into the wind, and sheâs gone off on her next adventure.
-
By the time Klee notices the pair in the distance, they had already seen each other. Diluc had slowed down, steeling himself. Anything to do with Kaeya had to be trouble. Contrary to him, Kaeya was looking forward to see what Klee had in store for the two of them. He made a show of putting a skip in his step, flicking his gaze towards Diluc every so often.
Once they got close enough to the tree, the gap between them lessened significantly. Diluc stares at Kaeya, but does not acknowledge him further.
Kaeya, as confidently frivolous as ever, decides to start the conversation.
âThat must hurt!â
Dilucâs taken aback by his statement. âWhat?â
âWhy, this of course,â Kaeya leans toward him, pointing out Dilucâs hold on the Dodoco, âthat poor Dodocoâs scalp must be burning by now. Have you been carrying him like that the whole way?â
Diluc turns it towards him, inspecting said scalp. His face is deadpan as he adjusts his hold to grab its tail with his whole hand. The only reply spared for his brother is a âHmphâ. His fingers were getting tired anyway.
Infuriatingly, Kaeya laughs. Diluc knows itâs a fake one though, itâs too light, too airy.
âLook, Iâm only here to return this to that kid. Not talk to you.â
âIs that it, too busy even for some small talk Diluc?â
His nostrils flare. âYes.â
-
Thatâs the general tone of their exchanges up until they reach Klee. She did just as she was told, waiting there until they were in earshot. Once they get close enough, she leaps up and runs towards them.
âHello Kaeya, hello Diluc.â Her arms are outstretched to wave at them as hard as she can. Her smile only grows wider as they draw nearer and nearer.
Sheâs jumping up and down by the time they come to stand next to her picnic blanket. âIâm so happy you came, my mom was supposed to be here but sheâs busy on her new adventure so now I have to finish this food all by myself,â she takes a deep breath, trying to get out everything Alice had told her to say, âbut not anymore because youâre both here! We get to have a picnic together, isnât that fun.â
Kleeâs grin is matched by Kaeyaâs. He picks her up, âah yes, how convenient that you had us come Kleeâ, and tosses her up into the air.
Diluc watches them, his arms crossed. Itâs all a plot by that mage, Alice. No wonder heâs seen that handwriting before.
As Klee squeals in Kaeyaâs arms, Diluc bends over to drop the Dodoco onto the blanket.
âIâm sorry, but I need to head back to the winery. I only came to return this to you.â
At that, Klee stills. Even Kaeya stops in his tracks. Like a well coordinated act, Kleeâs eyes gloss over, and Kaeya gasps, exaggerated.
âOh Diluc, how harsh. Youâd turn away a maiden in distress with all this extra food?â
Klee tilts toward Diluc, still in Kaeyaâs arms. With his help, she gets to look at him eye to eye. âPlease, please, pleaaasee Diluc! Please donât go, me and my mom prepared all of this ourselves. Itâll be fun, knights promise.â
Diluc almost scoffs but doesnât want to hurt her feelings, âknights promise?â
Klee wriggles out of Kaeyaâs grasp. Running towards Diluc, she stretches her arms up to plead.
âYes! Knightâs honor. If you donât have fun then I cannnn,â she glances this way and that, thinking hard, âI can help you deliver things! For the Angelâs share!â
âI donât-â
âDiluc, come on.â Kaeya interjects before he can say anything. He kneels by Klee, squishing her cheeks. âCan you really deny this face?â
Diluc shakes his head. âI was going to say, I donât need you to do that, Klee. Iâll stay, but only until the foodâs all gone. Okay?â
Klee leaps up, hitting her head on Kaeyaâs chin. Dilucâs eyebrows shoot up as they both groan in pain. Despite it, Kaeya quickly rubs both his chin and Kleeâs head with a light application of his Cryo.
âOwwww, sorry Kaeya.â
Kaeya removes his hand, âItâs alright Klee. No more distractions though, letâs enjoy this picnic, hm?â
At that, Klee directs them both to sit opposite of each other. Dilucâs conscious not to have any physical contact with Kaeya.
The blue Dodoco is discarded by his feet. The red one, Kaeya places on his lap.
âSo, what do you have here, Klee?â
As Klee carefully unpacks food from her backpack, Diluc wonders absently whether Kaeya was always this good with kids.
But then again, someone as childish as him would no doubt be popular with children themselves.
With all the food out, Kaeya begins unwrapping it. Following his lead, Diluc does the same.
Filled with glee at them helping each other, Klee quietly hums to herself. She pulls out their drink for their picnic, a homemade bottle of lemonade. She pours it carefully into three cups that Alice set out before she left.
âBefore we eat, want to try my lemonade? I made it myself!â Despite her cheerful tone, Kleeâs hands are balled into fists on her lap, her body tense with trepidation. She hopes it tastes good. In her mind this was her first test, if it didnât taste good maybe Mr. Diluc would decide to leave.
-
Albedo wasnât around to help her read the recipe, so she had to guess what was in a lemonade. Unfortunately, she only got as far as water, ice, and lemons. If only Diona had noticed when she was giving Klee the ice, just before she left for the tree (Unless she did and chose not to say anything).
-
She gives them a cup each, and under Kleeâs apprehensive gaze, they drink at the same time. Obviously, itâs sour, so so sour, and yet bitter at the same time. Despite themselves, Kaeyaâs lips purse, and Dilucâs nose wrinkles. But only for a second. None of them have the heart to tell her that her lemonade is no good. And with a quick glance at each other, they knew that she would never find out.
âYou know what, Klee?â Kaeya hastily puts his cup down. âThis is so good that I think Diluc should take it home.â
Diluc holds in a sigh. He had to hand it over to him, of course. âHeâs right. Letâs close this-â he pours the content of his cup back into the bottle, pauses, then pours Kleeâs cup in back as well â-because Iâm sure the maids would love to try it.â
Thankfully Klee buys it. She brightens up immediately, her fists rising from her lap and into the air. âOh, oh! When Klee comes to visit next time Iâll bring a whooole lot more for you to share.â Her tight hands finally open as she waves them in the air.
Her eyes are on Diluc, which is good, because when he flashes Kaeya a death glare, she doesnât see the mischievous grin on his brotherâs face. Kaeya even gets to throw the contents of his cup into the grass. Just in the nick of time, as Klee turns to him right after.
âOh, but is one cup enough for you Kaeya?â
âIt was, donât worry.â He resists the urge to pat her head, an apologetic move. Instead he looks to the other foods spread out on the blanket.
âHey, did you make these as well, Klee?â Please say no.
Klee shakes her head (much to their relief). âMy mom gave me some mora to go and buy food from Good Hunter. I made sure to choose alllll your favorites. Arenât I a big girl Kaeya? I did it all by myself!â
Kaeya smiles, giving her a thumbs up. âGood job Klee! Next thing I know youâll be delivering food for Sara.â
Klee giggles at that. âMaybe I can keep the food hot with my vision too. Thatâs a great idea.â
âThat⌠nevermind.â Diluc exchanges a concerned look with Kaeya.
-
After that, they dine uninhibited. Conversation flows between Kaeya and Klee effortlessly. Diluc joins in with some effort every once in a while. However with Kleeâs childlike joy and Kaeyaâs subtle teasing, itâs hard for him not to enjoy responding.
-
âSo you have a Pyro vision too?â
Diluc quickly swallows his food. âYes, why?â
Kleeâs eyes sparkle, âdo you also go fish blasting sometimes?â
âFish⌠blasting?â Although he has heard of her destructive habits (as do all Mondstat citizens), heâs caught off guard by its name. âNo, I donât really fish at all. I just have someone buy it from the market.â
Kleeâs undeterred, âdo you have your own Dodoco? Not the blue one though, one that explodes.â She pauses to take a bite of her fishermanâs toast. âLike Amber, she has her Baron bunny, itâs kinda like my dodoco. Do you have one like that?â
Diluc shakes his head. He holds in a comment for her to swallow before speaking.
âAwwww, so youâre like Bennet. He doesnât have any friends, just the rocks that always show up out of nowhere.â
Kaeya wipes the stray crumbs off of Kleeâs cheeks. âWell if he had to have one, canât you imagine him with a small abyss mage? Imagine that Klee, a tiny Pyro abyss mage following him around the winery.â
Diluc grunts. âNo, donât imagine that Klee.â
Klee looks between them, unsure.
âOh well, but at least he wonât be lonely now Klee. You did give us these Dodocoâs after all.â Kaeya lifts up his red one, tilting it back and forth.
Diluc glances at the one by his feet. âAh yes, Iâve been meaning to ask. Did you mean to switch them Klee? And by that I mean do I have to keep this one, or shall we exchange ours?â
Klee only shrugs, tossing the last of her sandwich into her mouth. As she wipes the crumbs from her hands she explains.
âI dunno, my mom said you can choose.â
Diluc huffs, looking at Kaeyaâs playfulness towards the red Dodoco.
âEven if you wanted your blue one, youâd keep that one just to spite me.â
Kaeya puts a hand on his chest, acting appalled. âDo you think so low of me dear b- Diluc? Why, all you need to do is ask nicely and Iâd hand it over.â
His jaw twitches, âPlease⌠give me the red one.â
âPlease and what, Diluc?â
âIâll say thank you once you do it, you-â
Kaeya shoves the red Dodoco to his chest. âHow rude!â He even slings an arm around Klee to hold her against him. âYouâre being such a bad influence on our little Klee. No deal, Iâm keeping my precious Dodoco.â
Diluc buries his head in his hands. âI hope you know I have many things Iâd like to call you right now.â
âOh? Any examples?â
âIâd hate to be a bad influence.â His voice is dripping with sarcasm.
While Klee readily reciprocates Kaeyaâs half hug, she wonders if this is what itâs like to have a sibling. Aside from Kaeya and Diluc, she only knows Jean and Barbara, but she rarely sees them interact. Try as she might, she canât imagine Albedo acting like Diluc or Kaeya though. Maybe itâs a grown up thing?
-
Too soon in Kleeâs eyes, they finish all the food, down to the last crumb. The sun has noticeably fallen from the skyâs peak, and the two brothers are helping Klee pack everything back into her backpack.
-
âDid you have a fun time Klee?â Kaeyaâs standing behind her, struggling to shove the last of it into her bag.
Klee pushes back against the force heâs exerting, her hands gripped on the straps of her backpack. âYeah! Even though we didnât get to play any gamesâŚâ
Kaeya laughs, taking a break from pushing, âyouâll have the whole rest of the day to play Klee.â
Kaeyaâs eyes quirk when Diluc waves him away from Klee. He steps aside, allowing DIluc to step behind her and firmly zip Kleeâs backpack shut.
âBut-â Dilucâs exertion causes her to lift up off the ground a bit, so she turns to look at the two of them over her shoulder â-it wonât be with you.â Her voice is tinged with sadness.
Dilucâs eyes grow softer. He rights her hat, saying âthereâs plenty of other people for you to play with Klee. Besides, why would you want to play with a boring old grown up.â Like Kaeya. He holds in a jab at his brother. Who is he to talk in the end.
âHeâs right Klee, and I could always play with you another time. But us grown ups,â he makes eye contact with Diluc, âneed to finish our duties for the day.â
Klee sighs, pulling up her backpack. âOkayâŚâ
âCome, letâs head back to Mondstat. Say goodbye to Diluc now-â
âActually.â He clears his throat. âI can walk with you. I have business in the Angelâs share anyway.â
âHooray! So our hangoutâs not over yet.â Klee grabs them both by the hand, tugging them forward.
âCan we I spy? Oh oh, can I go first?â
-
In the shade of the Symbol of Mondstadt's Hero, Alice smiles as she watches the trio walk away. Everything went according to plan.
Especially the part where Klee hid their Dodocoâs away from sight.
Once their voices fade from the breeze, Alice picks the Dodocos up, and hides them among the treeâs great roots. She leans them against each other, under the shade of an exposed root.
Satisfied with her work, she finally departs from Mondstat for real. Leaving a prayer to the winds whipping around the great oak.
âI pray to Barbatos that even without my intervention, they may come together again as brothers with the help of my darling Klee.â
