Doctor Syntax

These gorgeous (and wonderfully weird) hand-colored aquatints are from UNC HSL Special Collections’ copy of Thomas Rowlandson and William Combe’s The English Dance of Death Vols. I & II (1815 & 1816). The English Dance of Death is the second collaboration from Rowlandson and Combe, the authors of the highly popular Doctor Syntax series. 

This text is an update of the Dance of Death (or Danse Macabre) format, a medieval and renaissance genre that unites all men through their mortality, and features “...Skeletons...conducting Persons of all Ranks, Conditions, and Ages, to the Tomb” (Combe, iv).  Combe and Rowlandson’s version of the genre is particularly comic, and satirizes modern issues through highly caricatured and ridiculous drawings (I know I laughed far too much at the boxing skeleton).

Now archaeologists may have discovered the skeleton of the legendary 19th century stallion Doctors Syntax.

The bones were uncovered during the excavation of the former royal stables of Palace House, one of the homes of King Charles II, in Newmarket, Suffolk.

The skeleton is almost completely intact and measures the same height as the horse, 15 hands.

Doctor Syntax was put down in 1838 but his exact resting place was never known."
