They spot each other at the edge of a field overrun by poppies, where all that’s left of the crumbling earth are ashen bones and rotting corpses, and rivers rush with weeping souls of the unfortunate.

It’s not as climactic as one would think it’d be, considering he was the only other person they’d seen in years, and by the state of the land, the only other person they’ll ever see again.

But it goes like this;

George’s breath hitches softly, in the endearing way Sapnap knew when he’d found something intriguing. A tap on his shoulder prompts Sapnap to fix his eyes away from the map he held.

That’s when he spots him.

A mere figure in the distance, a small green speck they would’ve missed in the variegation of the forested background if it wasn’t for George’s wandering eyes.
