Sanji danced across the kitchen’s checkered tiles, whirling around in a ‘love tornado’ as he prepared snacks for the women on the Sunny. You sat nearby at the counter on a barstool, accompanying him as the ship’s chronicler, your journal open in front of you while you carefully recorded what happened yesterday.
“It smells amazing.” You raised an eyebrow, resting your chin on your palm as you leaned in against the kitchen counter, "Whatcha making there, love-cook? It's sweet."
“It’s a surprise, mon trésor,” Sanji replied with a saccharine smile sweeter than the sugar bubbling in the pan. “There's nothing sweeter more than you, sweetheart,” he added, swirling across the checkered tiles while stirring the caramelizing crystals.
"You say that to everyone," You teased playfully, rolling your eyes and jotting something down.
A subtle, slightly strained smile crossed his face before he turned away to adjust the stove. “I always see you writing,” he stated, smoothly changing the subject. “What are you writing this time?”
“I’m logging what happened yesterday on the new island while we stocked up on resources.” You glanced up at him, noting a quiet turmoil in his eyes. He tilted his head,
“What do you write in your journal?”
“I just write down whatever happens in our journey–the places we visit, the battles, the people, everything that makes up the Straw Hats’ adventure.”
“Like a diary?” he asked, brow furrowing faintly under his bangs.
“Not really, diaries are personal. This is the crew’s story. It’s like a diary, but professional. I don’t include my personal feelings in it.”
“Do you just write for the fun of it?” Sanji paused mid-whisk, leaning on the counter as he looked at you. Really looked at you. The usual playful heart-eyes softened into something more genuine as he listened. He loved hearing you talk.
He loved listening to every word, utterly captivated by your voice. So much so that sometimes he forgot to perform. Forgot the over-the-top dramatics, flirting, and simping.
Instead, some quiet glances lingered too long, and a dangerous little thought whispered at the back of his mind:
Perhaps—just perhaps—this could work out.
The whisk slowed in his hand.
The passion in your eyes as you spoke about your dream made something ache in his chest.
“Yeah, pretty much,” you admitted with a bright grin, your eyes sparkling as excitement took over. “I want to write something that could be passed down one day. After Luffy becomes the King of the Pirates, and all of us achieve our dreams, we can look back at this logbook and relive all the memories we created together!”
You saw past the “love-cook.” Past the theatrics. Past the act itself. The way you spoke with such genuine belief in the crew’s dream pulled at something deep inside him.
It would be so simple to fall to his knees and give you everything.
Because loving you meant letting you near the bloodline of the Vinsmokes.
He would never forgive himself if that ever happened.
For a moment, the only sounds were the soft whisking of the whipped cream and the scratch of your pen before a charming laugh broke the silence.
“That’s beautiful,” he murmured, voice unusually soft. “You’re preserving our legend, one page at a time, mon amour.”
"You don't have to act with me, you know?" You held his gaze steadily.
For a moment, Sanji said nothing at all.
Then he smiled — softer this time, stripped of its usual charm.
He scooped a generous spoonful of the fresh heavy cream he had just whisked and held it out to you. “Would you like a taste?”
You pursed your lips together disapprovingly at the topic being changed before you leaned forward and tasted it straight from the spoon, letting out a contented hum as you shook your head. “It’s perfect, curly brow.” You muttered, a little bit of cream at the corner of your lips.
A delicate blush crept up to Sanji's face before he reached for his nose to try to play it nonchalantly.
“You have been picking up a lot of the Mosshead’s vocabulary,” Sanji commented, wiping the cream away with his finger–subtly brushing your bottom lip, lingering there for a few more seconds than needed. “Don’t let that idiot spoil your lovely mouth,” he breathed.
"Don't divert the topic. I mean it." You looked up at him with a faint frown.
"You can be yourself with me."
You gave his hand a gentle squeeze.
“I know.” His smile softened. "I'm truly indebted to you, mon tresor."
For a second, his usual charm faltered. Then a quiet, genuine laugh escaped him. He took your hand, pressing a gentle kiss to your knuckles, ocean-blue eyes full of raw affection.
You let out a flustered smile, and with that, his earlier insecurities vanished in an instant at the sight of your radiance. All that remained was the quiet certainty that he was exactly where he belonged — right here, with you.
