I ranted about this on twitter a while ago but I still think about it every so often....
Why do the DMC5:SE cutscenes look so goddamn weird??
First of all, mods don't work on these scenes, so I assume they're pre rendered (? idrk how this stuff works) and I believe they look the same on every platform, so it's not a case of bad porting.
Vergil looks the weirdest. He just looks so wrong. It looks more like a cosplayer than his actual model. For some reason his jacket is no longer navy with blue accents, it's black and silver. I guess the face part could be due to weird motion capture or something but why would they change his colors???
Dante's stubble is just... gone. His face also looks pretty weird. And his jacket is a lot less red.
Not to mention, the colors and atmosphere are completely off.
There some comparisons to be made between scenes shown in both the SE cutscenes and the original aftercredits (left, original; right, SE)
I don't understand why they couldn't have just straight up reused these shots instead of redoing them worse.
I guess it's safe to assume these differences are due to low budget or time crunch or something. But I'm just amazed that no one has ever mentioned how fucking ugly and weird Vergil and Dante look here lmao
If anyone has some more information on these strange cutscenes then please enlighten me...
Recently it was revealed by Casey Edwards that there was a section of âBury the Lightâ that references the William Blake poem âThe Sick Roseâ.
Bury the Light:Â
Beyond the tree Fire burns Secret love Bloodline yearns Dark minds embrace Crimson joy
The Sick Rose:
âO Rose thou art sick. The invisible worm, That flies in the night In the howling storm: Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy: And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy.â
I found this section really interesting in relation to Vergilâs character. As it could be interpreted that Vergil himself is âThe Sick Roseâ.Â
Throughout the series there is a lot of symbolism that sees Vergil himself as the âBlue Roseâ.Â
Dante in the Lucifer cutscene in DMC4, as well as his DMC5 taunt, wields a âRed Roseâ. Fitting as his symbolic colour given his commonly associated colour is red. As well as red roses being a symbol of passion and romance. Something that seems rather fitting given Danteâs flirtatious attitude.Â
It seems fitting then, with Vergil as the blue twin, and a mirror to Dante that he should be seen as the âBlue Roseâ. Further supported by the vines of sharp thorns that can be seen decorating both his coats DMC5 and DMC3. As well as Neroâs own gun baring the same name, with both weapons sharing a link to his parents (Such as Red Queen being related to Neroâs motherâs Red Dress)
This floral connotation fits with his character too.Â
Blue roses, have long been a symbol for striving for the miraculous or impossible. They are also linked to (divine) beauty and unrequited love. Which aside from most of the Sparda family being conventionally attractive (Including Vergil himself). The unrequited love aspect is rather interesting considering his relationship towards Eva, and this âSecret loveâ Vergil believes she has for Dante over him. Especially on the day of the Sparda homeâs attack and her saving Dante over him. Tying in with the idea that he can see house burn âbeyond the treeâ (A small reference to the DMC3 Manga)
Vergil wishes to accomplish the impossible by obtaing his fatherâs power to protect himself and those he loves, after his motherâs - Spardaâs âSecret loveâ - death. Either because he sees himself as Spardaâs chosen son and that it's his duty to seek vengeance on Mundus and accomplish the impossible like his father did with his rebellion - thus forever protecting his remaining family (Dante) if Mundus is no longer a threat. Or more tragically (and likely), never wishes to witness the death of a loved one ever again.Â
His noble goal slowly gets corrupted however. In connection to Blakeâs poem; âThe invisible wormâ could be seen as his demonic side influencing and overwhelming Vergil with an obsession with power. A âwormâ that comes âIn the night of howling stormâ (The attack on the Sparda family manor where Vergil demonic side was most likely awakened, or at least his belief that humanity/his mother Eva was âweakâ and fallible was formed.)Â
This pursuit of power ultimately ends up destroying Vergilâs life. Leading him to abandon his son Nero, becoming distant and forming a fierce hatred and rivalry towards Dante, and ending up enslaved and tortured under Mundusâ as Nelo Angelo.
Much like how the âSick Roseâ is destroyed by the âWormâ at the end of the poem.Â
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk! ・(*^â˝^*)ă
I really enjoyed doing this! So may do more of these analysis in the future! :3
Bury the Light
Casey Edwards did not have to go that hard, but now DMC5 has THREE bangers!
I think Vergil actually getting to use his arm blades in-game would have been badass.
Iâm not sure what it is you mean about Beowulf?
In terms of SinDT gameplay, having the arm blades act somewhere between Yamato and Beowulf in terms of capabilities would make sense.
In terms of Vergilâs armoury... if youâre asking about Vergil still having Beowulf/a âspectreâ form of Beowulf, there are a couple of points to go along with that:
Vergil has been given Beowulf in every game in which he is playable, whether it makes sense or not (*cough*DMC4:SE*cough*)
Vergil also has a weapon called the âMirage Edgeâ for DMC5, which appears to be a demonic aura/summoned sword that acts as a usable Forge Edge, completing the generic weapon set that he has always been given.
Vergil using his own new version of Force Edge is interesting, given that it is the unawakened form of the Sparda sword, which by this point in time has not only been completed, but also merged with the Rebellion to make the Devil Sword Dante.
It would seem like if one of the guys uses and bonds with a particular weapon - particularly one belonging to a family member - then they can come to replicate it with their own demonic essence. Nero, after all, also still uses a ghostly form of the Yamato whilst in Devil Trigger; perhaps in time, he could develop this skill to use it out of his demon form, too, as his father seemingly has done.
