Hi hello hey. I have some Thoughts about wings/wing society in minecraft/hermitcraft that I need to share
β’ Natural Elytra vs. Mechanical Elytra
Some players have natural elytra; wings that they are born with, given through magic, or otherwise a physical addition to their body. While winged players are not uncommon, not everyone has natural wings and not every winged player can use those wings to fly. Wingspans and wing types vary by species.
β’ Basic mechanical elytra are based off of the Ender Dragon's wings, but they only allow the user to glide without lift. Because of this, propulsion devices nicknamed 'rockets' are used to help get a player off the ground. They let out a quick spout of pressurized air that is enough to shoot a player off the ground, and they make a similar noise to fireworks.
β’ On Hermitcraft, Skizz has the largest natural wingspan, closely followed by BDubs, then False, Grian, Pearl, Impulse, Tango, Cub & Scar, then Mumbo & Beef.
(Note: Mumbo and Etho are outliers; both possess shapeshifting abilities and therefore can have any size wings. Both prefer to use mechanical elytra.)
β’ Tango uses mechanical elytra to travel far distances since their wings are too small to carry them far. Cub and Scar cannot properly "fly" with their vex/allay wings, they can only hover, and they also use mechanical elytra. Mumbo and Beef, being vampires, have the ability to transform into bats, but neither of them use it. Otherwise, in their human form, they have small bat wings that aren't nearly big enough to carry them. Again, they both use mechanical elytra.
β’ Impulse and Pearl (tiny imp wings and moth wings) can't get off the ground by themselves, so they build launch pads off tall points in their builds, and both employ the use of rockets.
β’ The rest of the Hermits use mechanical elytra and rockets to travel around the server. The design and use of these devices vary by hermit- for example, Xisuma's elytra and rocket power is built into their suit. Elytra designs can change from season to season as well; for example, Gem had fairy elytra in s8 and s9, fin-like elytra for s10, and dragon elytra for s11.
β’ At the beginning of the season, it's common courtesy for the avians and those with natural elytra to prohibit the use of their wings until other Hermits have achieved their mechanical elytra. Its just kind, and it ensures that there is no unfair advantage towards the ones with natural elytra.
