Many people talk of a secret route for success if you want to become a successful and well known DJ, but this is just a fallacy.  There are no easy routes to get there, and if there is – it isn’t the one you want or the kind of success you want.  It’s sad but some of the worst DJs out there are getting noticed simply because of their horrible skills and negative feedback; it’s a viral way of getting noticed.  This is not what you want.  One of the good sides of being a digital DJ or musician in these times is the amount of ability each person has to contribute to the scene.  It is the DIY guys who really take the baby steps to help the community out – and this will get you noticed. Conventional wisdom would say that the more that is out there, the easier it may be to learn about a subject.  Think of your favorite hobby.  In this case, it might be DJing.  Now, remember back in the days when there was no real way for DJs to communicate with each other except for actually meeting up?  If you were lucky, a DJ took enough time to make a DJ video; giving you the chance to learn through someone else.  The problem of not being able to communicate with other DJs is no longer a problem.  You can ask basically any question about technique online, and find a video that fully describes how to do it. Nothing beats advice from an experienced DJ, for they are the ones that are proof that it can be done for a living.  Many of us aren’t willing to risk the idea that DJing will somehow go out of style when we are in our 40’s, so we give it up (at least professionally).  Those who are lucky enough to make a career out of it are keen on several ideas that make the experience more enjoyable and more successful.  A DJ should be able to know what they gear does, and they should be able to use everything on it, or at least know how it works.  You never know when that feature might be useful. As far as song selection, you have to find a middle ground between what the crowd wants and what you want.  If you go 100 percent to either side, the crowd might hate you and you might hate yourself in the process.  The DJs job is always to have music, and new music at that; therefore it makes sense that they need to constantly listen to new and old music.  How can you add to your music vocab if you aren’t listening to new things. http://www.inthemix.com.au/features/57322/Laidback_Lukes_five_golden_rules_for_DJs

Every DJ out there who has had a decent amount of time behind the decks while in front of a crowd has employed a few tricks to get what they need.  The goal of any DJ is not just to play the right music when the crowd wants it – the goal is to control the crowd in a way.  We want a sort of call and answer effect to happen, even if it is only gesture based with the crowd.  Believe me, this is harder than it seems. Making the crowd hate you is much easier and requires little, if any, effort. Trick number one should be obvious.  Simply drop the right hit and the right time (or the wrong time).  Amateur DJs are notorious for using up their club bangers way too soon in an attempt to engage the audience.  The trouble is that the song is being used before the correct apex, and the DJ will be left without the proper tools.  Cutting out the song so that the crowd can sing the chorus works so long as it is rarely used.  Messing with the EQ a lot is similar to using FX and can work if done tastefully. http://www.djtechtools.com/2014/06/28/5-cheap-dj-tricks-and-how-to-avoid-them/
