Trying to have a bit of a Saturday afternoon session on the decks and someone insists on sleeping exactly where i need to stand...
(DJ Problems)
Got asked by a mate to DJ a five hour set at his new bar.
Offered him mates rates for it, which is well below the going rate for that long, and his boss turned me down as apparently I'm too expensive and thinks he can get someone cheaper...
Enjoy your Spotify playlist for the night then chaps!
(And yes, I did send him that gif!)
DJ problems
Got some friends asking when Iâm putting out new music. Theres 3 parts to that answer.Â
1. Iâm currently broke so I cant access my recordpool to download the music I want/need for the mixes
2. Iâm suffering from a lack of creativity, but more being a perfectionist
3. Iâve made about 20 mixes actually... Regarding #2 they don't sound good to me.. But they prob hit... I might drop themÂ

When you're in the middle of a mix and your software crashes...
DJ Gothic
Your cables are multiplying. At first you have two RCA cables. Then four. Now thirty. You don't remember buying any. All of them have your name on them. You give them away, but they keep multiplying. You have 2000 friends on Facebook. You don't know these people, you think as you click "invite", but you must have met them at the bar. The profile pictures bear their teeth at you. All of them look like skrillex. You have three minutes left in your set. You queue up another song, pack away some things. The next DJ is talking at the bar; his gear is still in the flight cases under the booth. You wave at him, but he doesn't notice. You check the time stamp - you have three minutes left in your set. You reach into the bucket of cables - you need another RCA - and your hand brushes something. It's sticky. You recoil, disgusted. Something in the bucket shifts, slithers away. The DJ booth is cramped, dark, musty. Everything is glossy, sticky. You shine a flashlight behind the cdjs, hoping to find your sunglasses. There is a gap between the table and the booth wall. You peer into it, but there is only blackness. At the end of the night you ask the sound guy if the two of you can look back there. He stiffens. "It's gone," he says. "The things that go down there never come back." There's a new door person tonight. She's bright, pretty. At the end of the night she is wan and faded. The next night there is another. You don't get attached. There is an office but it's always locked. The lights flicker in the crack around the frame. You have heard low murmuring voices but you have never seen anyone go in or out, and when you knock on the door it yields the purest silence you have ever heard. "I have a request," asks a tall man. He has a tattoo near his left eyebrow. "Go for," you say. You hear a garbled mess of words, but you nod. "I'll see if I can fit it into my set." You forget, immediately, as your coworker gets a filter stuck "on". At the end of the night you see the man again. "Thanks for playing my song," he says. He moves like through a strobe; choppy, fast. Someone on your friends list asks you where Molly is. You laugh. He insists she is real, a girl. You have never met this person or the girl he is looking for. Who is she? Everyone is looking for her. She must be really hot. Someone at the rave is dressed as a zombie, covered in blood. You watch him fall down in the crowd, mildly concerned. There was blood in the washroom too. And on the dumpster behind the venue. The bar manager is watching the zombie dancer closely, though; you're sure he won't be a problem for long. You are being asked to spin at a gig. You would like the date, start and finish times, as well as the location. Your fee is $20/hr. "Yes we are so excited to have you volunteer!!" "I am not volunteering; I'm doing 6 hours of work and I expect to be paid." "I'm so glad to have you involved!! Your time and skills are important to us!!" You always have six drink tickets in your pocket. It's protection, a ward. The shambling hordes of wanna-bes flock to you, and the tickets are your salvation. You cannot read the flier. You squint at it; you know your name is on this thing somewhere. Words swim; the date, the time, the venue. You know you're sober. Is it the lights? It is 3:30 am and you are packed up. You remain, talking to the bartender and the manager. A phone rings somewhere, and the manager excuses herself to answer it. "Leave," the bartender whispers. Both sets of eyelids blink. "While you still can." You take your flight cases backstage. You try not to take too long. It's too warm back there, and the walls are moist, pinkish grey, trembling.
What Your Request Says About You
âBela Lugosiâs Deadâ - you are 19 or 59 no in between
This Corrosion, Love Crime, Sheâs in Parties, Lucretia My Reflection, Kiss Them For Me - You just started going out and also you donât know how to pace yourself on the dance floor yet. You either just started drinking and donât know what you like, thus carrying around one highball all night or you think youâre a rockstar and vomit in the bathroom. Please just tell a staff member if you think youâre sick ok.
Lucretia My Reflection, Israel, Peekaboo, literally every Joy Division song - been into goth long enough to still get excited over obvious stuff, probably has a Strong Opinion about what makes someone a goth that you discuss in public. You canât remember the last time you left the house without a full face of makeup.
Romeoâs Distress, Hong Kong Garden - You do not listen to lyrics
Swans - You are unaware that this band is the millennial Joy Division and you think theyâre really underground.
Death in June - you think controversy makes you cool and are offended by political correctness
VNVN - I can play any song thatâs 4/4 130bpm in a minor key with melodic vocals and you will love it and also probably think itâs VNVN
Crystal Castles - I bet you have a poster of Robert Smith on your wall
Clock DVA, Neubauten - you miss when industrial sounded like washing machines and yelling, you hate EBM, EDM, darkwave, futurepop, and especially things with wobble bass. You arenât going to dance to your request because dancing is for posers and also you havenât been out of your house in 9 months and have forgotten how rhythm works
KMFDM - youâre going to complain about nothing being âheavyâ enough and then complain if anything actually âheavyâ gets played. your pants have too many dangly parts.
Korn - itâs your first goth night, youâre 19, you might be lost or from a small town. Someone is going to be mean to you; ignore them and have as much fun as you can manage.
Spoor Aeturnus - literally looks like a corpse, âintellectualâ, probably going to do a dance to symbolize winterâs first frost/capitalism
Rudimentary Peni - wonât dance, even if I play your request. Probably going to vomit in the back alley on your way to an after-hours punk show. Likes offending suburban moms.
Christian Death (Rozz Williams era) - you spend $10000/year on hairspray and you have an animal skull collection
Christian Death (Kand edition) - youâve been in the scene either just long enough to have run out of obvious deathrock or you also are into metal
Cinema Strange - 95% chance of stripy pants
Any other deathrock band - shows up at 11 even though that is prime oontz time, dances halfheartedly to Lucretia My Reflection, buys lots of drinks, forgets to show up before 11 at the next one, never been seen during the day or sober
London After Midnight - you might have actual cobwebs in your hair but you look really hot so nobody is going to care
All aggrotech bands - tactical everything, bald or dreadlocks, really tacky 90âs sunglasses indoors, thinks ironic fascism is funny, probably single chubby dude in his early 30âs. You are so mad the hot goth chicks wonât talk to you but not mad enough to change anything about yourself to become less unappealing
obscure early 80âs postpunk bands - you probably donât consider yourself a goth, youâre totally convinced that digital hardware synths are superior to software for vague and contradictory reasons, you hate getting dressed up, and at some point in the night you will refer to someone else as a poseur or a fashion punk. You have a vinyl collection that takes up most of your living space and are going to pick a fight with the DJ or sound tech about bitrate. You arenât sure what a bit is, but you know it *must* be bad.
Mitternacht - youâre either a goth who has defected into EBM territory or a cybergoth who wants more people on the dancefloor
âtear you apartâ - you like AHS too much and are wearing a sulphur symbol somewhere on your body
âallegedly dance floor tragedyâ - youâre playing stump the DJ and also youâre not really going to dance to this song
Weep, Mors Syphilitica - youâre wearing a ballgown the approximate diameter of my kitchen and also you own a fainting couch
Nick Cave - please donât snort coke in the bathroom
âMarianâ - you like to think you can speak German. protip: you canât speak German, especially not when youâve been drinking.
âAnacondaâ - you think youâre funny. Protip: request the Last Danceâs cover of Brittney.
Panzermensch - this is the only And One song you know and also you like cats
March Violets - you think flirting is best done by exchanging obscure band names
Clan of Xymox - you want to dance to oontz but youâre too wound up in goth points to request it
Legendary Pink Dots - no you cannot light up inside the bar
Covenant - probably youâre in your late 30âs/early 40âs and probably youâre still wearing vinyl everything.
âCities of the Futureâ - you think this is a Covenant song
Personal Jesus, Depeche Mode- you just discovered goth and also fetish attire.
Personal Jesus, Manson- youâre either under 23 or over 37 and you overdraw your lips. Stop using pencil eyeliner. I believe in you; you can do liquid.
âItâs a Sinâ - you think this is a Depeche Mode song
Jesus and Mary Chain - you think grunge has something to do with goth, and are probably going to pick a fight with someone over pearl jam or some other stupid dad band
