Monday, January 4: Deep Purple, “Cascades: I’m Not Your Lover”
R.I.P. Jon Lord (1941-2012)
On Purpendicular, “Cascades: I’m Not Your Lover” was a relatively brisk hard rocker enhanced by Jon Lord’s typically classy organ, but the Hammond really came out in full force on stage, where Deep Purple would more than double the length of the track and turn it into a 10+ minute jam. But in either setting, the song found Purple reveling in their new lease on life, with Steve Morse both seamlessly integrating himself into the band while also carving out his own place, and the rest of the band seeming to enjoy making music together for the first time in a long time. There was a lightness and ease in everyone’s performance, which stood in stark contrast to Purple’s previous three records and felt more in line with the band’s legacy even without Ritchie Blackmore on board. “Cascades” wasn’t a rave-up like “Speed King”, but it felt totally natural for Deep Purple and showed they could still make enjoyable music well into their fourth decade.

Another eclectic bunch of albums and genres I listen to
The song "Peaches en Regalia" is widely recognized as a modern jazz fusion standard and is one of Zappa's best-known songs. Zappa plays a short solo on an instrument credited as an "octave-bass". Underwood contributes flute and multiple saxophone, clarinet and keyboard parts. Zappa later re-recorded the song several times in live performances. It has been re-interpreted by many other jazz and rock artists, including Phish, the Dixie Dregs, Frogg Café and Kerrie Biddell.
