they're both convinced he's their cat. sure Sirius bonded with him first, but Remus is the one whose lap he sits on every evening. Sirius always moves too much and Crookshanks jumps off with an irritated huff - much like he does when Remus won't crouch down to stroke him because his back/knees/ankles are aching, which is every morning, so Sirius is always the one to feed him. and go out prowling with him, rain or shine, and chase off other cats threatening their territory or pigeons waddling a little too close. but Remus is the one who wrangles Crookshanks to the vet for his shots and that time he broke a paw jumping down the chimney (Sirius twisted an ankle climbing down to get him)

the lawyers manage to get them to agree to exchange Crookshanks every month, but obviously Crookshanks has no interest in following anyone's rules. he goes where he wants when he wants, meaning Sirius and Remus frequently turn up at each other's houses late at night, demanding their cat back. sometimes they don't leave
