          “nah, i’d say we’ve got another...”       he shifted his weight back and forth between his feet, a physical manifestation of his mental vacillation. “oh, maybe another half an hour before they notice we’re gone? give or take.” not that he minded; the idea of getting at least another half hour outside, away from the stuffy dinner back inside, brought the biggest, most authentic smile he’d worn all night. suit jacket abandoned on a lawn chair, river had taken the risk of getting some dirt or grass stains or dew on his dress pants to take a seat on the well-manicured backyard in the comfort of the fresh summer night air. he wound his arm up yet again to send a tennis ball flying down the expanse of the lawn           he’d brought out a third party to their little gathering for refuge and had been sending his dog running back and forth since they’d slipped out. since their move to riverdale, reggie’s company and willingness to sneak away and risk the ire and aggravation of their parents had been really the only thing that made these gatherings of the area’s wealthy and important bearable. “last thing i heard was my dad starting to get into the disparities between american mass transit and what they have back in shanghai, and that can really get him going. definitely gonna buy us some good time.”

When the sheets were unbearably warm, sticking to Daphne’s legs like flypaper, she leapt up, frustration rolling off her in waves. Headband-less and bare-faced she ran both hands through her hair and sighed. The house was still, her parents out of town, and her sisters all but moved out. Reggie in the other room made for a companion, but she wouldn’t wake him up now –– even though she really wanted to. She doubted he’d mind the purpose of her visit. 

Still, she forced herself towards the balcony, pulling the decadent frosted doors open to pad out onto the cool stone with bare feet. The outdoor pool glittered like a jewel embedded in the lush greenery of the Blake’s grounds. The moon hung heavy and fat in the sky, lonely without the stars to support him. 

Daphne sighed as she set her chin in her hands, glancing to the left. She startled to find Reggie already looking at her. 

“ JEEPERS! ” 

She swore. “ What are you doing up!? You scared the Scooby Snacks out of me! ” 

     “      YOU’RE  SAYIN’  LESS  THAN  I  THOUGHT  YOU  WOULD,      ”      he  admitted  softly,  hands  running  through  his  hair  as  he  watched  reggie  process  the  news  that  he  and  the  majority  of  the  serpents  were  werewolves.      he  should’ve  expected  that  vader  would  become  aware  of  his  presence  eventually  and  reggie  seemed  to  be  handling  this  better  than  he  thought.      it  wasn’t  like  you  found  out  monsters  were  real  everyday.      hands  pull  at  the  borrowed  t - shirts  as  he  looks  around  the  mantle’s  kitchen  which  he  was  sure  was  probably  nearly  as  big  as  his  mom’s  entire  apartment,      “      c’mon,  reggie  you  gotta  say  somethin’,      ”      fangs  is  almost  pleading  with  him  to  say  something,  anything  by  this  point.      with  someone  or  something  getting  quite  a  murder  streak  going,  all  fangs  had  wanted  to  do  was  make  sure  reggie  was  safe  and  alive.
