#distributed proofreaders

Have been refreshing myself on the tutorials and quizzes for Distributed Proofreaders so I can do some volunteering again while I am also figuring out what I can do next with this degree I'm supposed to be officially getting next month! A little familiarity is making the uncertainty slightly less terrifying!

On Tuesday I proofread a few pages of The House at Pooh Corner for Project Gutenberg. It finished completely in the round I work in the same day. And now I saw an email from late yesterday saying it finished in a later round. People really want to proofread Winnie the Pooh.

i can promise you scanning software, it says the word “finally” there in Teutonic Mythology Volume 2, it definitely does NOT say “anally”

calming myself down by proofreading and it occurred to me just how autistic that is

I have started doing online volunteering with Distributed Proofreaders, which I know isn’t like, a big thing, but I really like it. It’s the kind of thing that I’m good at, noticing the little details in the sentences and formatting. It has clear rules, and it’s really cool to see all the different kinds of books being preserved. Even if some of them are not what I’d read for fun, it doesn’t matter, because I get into a different state of mind than usual reading, where the content doesn’t matter so much. I know it’s not the same as proper employment (*grumbles something about the dwp not getting in contact*), but it’s really good to do something useful that I think I can confidently say I’m pretty good at.

Sure a paying job would, you know, pay, but would it give me the opportunity to format text in a modern English translation of the Exeter Book of Riddles? Probably not. I can pay for things with enthusiasm right

there really should be more consistency in marking the difficulty level of books on distributed proofreaders like someone will mark a book “hard” just for using the occasional long s then something isn’t marked with any difficulty level even though it frequently involves quotes from various languages too old for wordcheck to recognise them
