You nervously stepped in front of the mahagony door of Angel's Share. Carefully considering backing out the last second, you shook your head and opened the door.
You were working today so you couldn't throw out the flowers without being late. You just need to calm down. It's not a big deal. ...right?
“Good morning!” you called.
Raspy voice that you now knew too well answered: “Morning.”
“Not a morning person, huh?”
“Not when you have to stand here till five and get back to the same spot only a few hours later,” he growled, obviously exhausted.
“Wait but that should have been avoided! Wasn't Charles on shift yesterday?”
“He wasn't feeling well the last week so i sent him home. We can't have him infecting customers now, can we?”
“That's fair but you should have called me. I wasn't busy at all.”
“I won't be overwhelming you this soon after your inju-” his confession of worry stopped the moment he noticed the bouquet in your hands, “what are the flowers for? Did you receive a love confession on your way here?”
You laughed. Oh, he could listen to that sound for ages! What a melody.
“No, I didn't. I picked them myself.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, I have someone in mind who is most suitable to receive them today,” you looked at him, eyes sparkling with mischief.
“And who might that be?”
“You, of course.”
He froze. One would think that pyro vision holders would be unable to do so, but alas.
He cleared his throat before he spoke. Archons knew he needed it. “I- Ah, me? What for?”
“Isn't it your birthday today?”
“Well, yes-”
“Very well then,” you came closer to him, only the counter keeping some space between the two of you now, and smiling you said, “happy birthday Diluc.”
You offered him Windwheels tied together with beautiful black ribbon.
“Thank you,” he said while taking the bouquet with his cheeks gaining some colour.
“Don't mention it. You know, I think I know what you meant the other day.”
“What do you mean?”
“I was thinking about it and I came to the conclusion that you look like a windwheel kind of person.”
Your matter of fact statement made him laugh. You couldn't remember when was the last time you got anything more than a chuckle out of him. This was completely different. You wished this moment had no end, however it ended with his gaze softly resting on your features while fond smile found its way towards his lips. You couldn't be able to remember your own name if someone had asked you in that moment. Your mind was too occupied with his breathtaking presence.
“I can't say you're wrong,“ he finally replied, “I am indeed considerably fond of these.”
“I'm glad,” you smiled, “do you have anything planned for today by the way?”
“Pardon?”
“I was just wondering if you're doing anything special. It's your birthday afterall.”
“Uh, truthfully, I'm not really celebratory type. I don't do anything out of the ordinary...”
“No way!”
“Yes...”
“Not even a cake?”
“Adelaide usually prepares my favourites for dinner but that's about it.”
“Doesn't that feel lonely?”
“I'm used to it by now.”
“That doesn't answer my question, you know.”
When he remains quiet you sigh and speak once more.
“I am certainly not trying to overstep, but maybe you should try it out? I mean, change of long lasting routine can feel pretty refreshing. Especially in this case.”
He seems to be lost for words so he clears his throat to steady himself and changes the subject by pointing towards the flowers: “I better put them into a vase, it would be shame to let them wither.”
The Windwheels were placed on the table in Diluc's private room upstairs and the long day at the tavern slowly began. You'd be lying if you were to say that you didn't steal a glance or two at Diluc, wondering if your words didn't upset him.
Diluc on the other hand was wondering if his lack of response came off as rude. He was thinking of many ways to make it up to you. Maybe he should take your advice and try out some celebration? Wouldn't that be too sudden though? Who would he even invite? His estranged brother? He'd surely show up for the alkohol if not anything else but that would destroy the entire purpose of it, no? Should he invite just you? Archons, would you even say yes?
Both of you lost in your own minds locked eyes several times throughout the evening. You were too busy and didn't even realise when it was time to close the place. Suddenly the number of customers was rapidly decreasing, leaving only passed out patrons on a few tables.
You were about to escort them out when a deep voice spoke right beside you: “I'll take care of them. You can start cleaning up the bar.”
“Alright.”
While taking out sleeping drunks he had more than enough time to rethink his idea of inviting you over. It might seem improper to do it in such spontaneous manner, especially this late at night. Maybe he should settle on tommorow? Yes. That sounds good enough. Doesn't it? Oh, what was he even thinking? If only he knew... When he entered the warmth of the tavern again he noticed you'd already started cleaning the tables and he felt a little bad for not hurrying up to lend you a hand. And right after gaining some foolish confidence he spoke.
“I've been considering your proposal of changing things up a little...”
“Aand..?” you expectantly looked at him.
“And I think it could serve some benefit.”
“Yes, absolutely!” you cheered him on.
“Are you free tomorrow evening?”
“I don't think I have anything planned, no...”
“In that case, would you care to join me for dinner?”
You thought your heart stopped beating for a moment and you looked at him with wide eyes full of surprise. You didn't even dare to guess how much progressed the blush you felt raise to your face was.
“B-birthday dinner I mean! With cake and everything. You don't have to bring anything with you, of course, you've already given me the flowers, ah, I- I don't like large gatherings so I thought one-on-one hangout would be much better...” he added quickly, noticing your shocked expression.
“Of course, I'd love to.” you smiled after what felt like eternity to him.
But in all honesty, you were just trying not to make a fool of yourself and compose your mind before you spoke anything to Diluc in that moment.
“I'm looking forward to seeing you. Can I pick you up at six? Walk to the winery isn't that far off and i think it might be quite a sceneric route.”
“Suits me. However, I'd feel rather uncomfortable with not bringing a present, how about just some trinket?”
“No! No, I couldn't stand for you going through even more trouble to get me something, your presence alone is more than enough,” he assured you with reddened ears.
“Is there geniuenly nothing I could assist you with or help? I don't view it as trouble in the slightest, in fact, picking gifts for people is my area of expertise dare I say.”
He thinks for a moment, while wiping clean remaining empty glasses. And a tought strikes him.
“Well, if you insist, you could indulge me in a chess match. I haven't played with anyone other than my butler for some time now.”
“Yes. It would be my pleasure.”
“I'm glad. You strike me as someone with strategic thinking, I have high hopes for our duel of wits,” he says, to what you chuckle.
“I wouldn't overestimate me if I were you. But I promise to do my best.”
You finally finished the clean up and couldn't help but feel disappointed that you can't continue your idle conversation. The end of today though would only mean start of the following day, which meant dinner with Diluc Ragnividr. And for that, you couldn't wait.
“I think that's everything for today. I'll walk you home today.”
“You don't have to-”
“I insist. I know you can handle yourself but knowing you got home safe would put my mind at ease. Especially this early after that incident.”
“...alright,” you agreed after a moment of hesitation. You couldn't say no to him. Not when his mind was this set on it.
He locked the door and followed you closely. It might have been just your wishful thinking, but you could've sworn he walked closer to you than usual. You could practically feel the warmth he emitted and if you moved your hand only a few inches closer you could intertwine your fingers, like it was the most natural action in the world. How would it feel, you wondered, his gloves against your skin. You didn't see his bare hands much, if ever, and you lost yourself in toughts of him and possibilities of tommorow's dinner.
After wishing each other good night, both of you suddenly realised you won't be able to fall asleep that easily tonight. With excitement and anxiety eating at your soul, dreams won't dare to enter your mind also.
