Honoring our dead is one way that we can begin to reclaim our indigenous ancestry. It is one action we can take to honor what was stolen from us a people from multiple indigenous cultures that were colonized gruesomely and forcefully into giving up spiritual practices. The claiming of Spanish identity for those in the Caribbean, Central and South America is like a badge of pride worn and sung it’s praise when in fact it is an attempt to erase the horrors of the mass genocide of Taino Arawak people first and then subsequently other indigenous nations in what would be called the Caribbean and Americas. The genocide of indigenous people began the process of enslaving African people. They perfected a system of rape, murder, oppression and systematically destroyed, manipulated, annihilated vast cultures across the Caribbean and the Americas. They claimed we were primitive and savage as they mutilated us, built churches or other buildings on our sacred grounds, and killed anyone in horrible ways who opposed them. You calling yourself Spanish is an insult to all our Indigenous ancestors who were murdered, you calling yourself Spanish is an insult to all our African ancestors who were murdered.
