AN ALTAR IN THE WORLD

An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith by Barbara Brown Taylor is a guideline of practices for us to “live with purpose,” while slowing down our everyday, frantic pace. The book proposes that we need to take time not only to discover new things, but to notice the small and ordinary things we see and feel every day. The author says that in seeking a spiritual life, “All we lack is the willingness to imagine that we already have everything we need. The only thing missing is our consent to be where we are.”

This book is easy to read, full of ideas and thoughtful insights that we can easily apply to support our daily life. Real experiences, coupled with spiritual examples and Scripture highlights, are refreshing and practical lessons for today’s Christians.

Barbara Brown Taylor teaches at Piedmont College in northeast Georgia and is an adjunct professor at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. She is an award-winning author, Episcopal priest, editor of a popular Christian magazine, and frequent commentator on Georgia Public Radio.

An Altar in the World is the book that the Adult Formation Ministry Team is using for our Easter Season course about God’s Creation. The classes meet on Sundays at 9:15 and 11:45 and on Tuesdays at 10:30 in the Reception Room.

An Altar in the World is also our choice for our first Saint James’ Church Read. We hope that people who can’t make it to the classes will still read the book so that all of us will have a common focus for church conversations.
