ty for elaborating! <3 when i set up a discord server, i always find it easier to break it down into categories first. then i'll fill in channels based on what feels appropriate for the group. then i'll create role permissions. here's a little outline of categories to follow:

out of character — home base for all of your ooc channels. ooc chat, ooc intros, questions, etc.

database — all of your group's essential data goes in here. plot, guidelines, locations, character roster, any additional lore.

outreach — place to hold all member outreach opportunities. i like breaking this out on its own so it's easier to find! it could probably go with ooc though :p i would put channels like starter calls, plotting calls, and wanted connections in here.

in character — place to host in character interactions. i like using discord community servers now. i would create a forum for threads and texts, then allow members to create posts within those.

muse info — place to host character information. again, i like using community forums to keep this less cluttered. each member gets a channel with their name, then they create posts within for every character they have.

then you're onto roles & permissions! ask yourself: where should my members be able to read messages vs. where should they only be able to read? for me, i would turn messaging permissions off for the database category. right click the category > permissions > [select your member role] > scroll to "text channel permissions" > toggle off "send messages and create posts". and if you happen to want a channel just for admin planning/moderating/etc, create yourself an admin role. create a channel for admin only & toggle on the "private channel" setting, then add your admin role to the list of viewers!
