All I Want for Christmas
âSo wait, you've actually never celebrated Christmas?â Jonah's jaw actually dropped in surprise, causing Cyrus to roll his eyes.
âNo, Jonah, I'm Jewish. We don't usually celebrate Christmas.â
âYeah, I know you're Jewish, but still...â Jonah sputtered, like not celebrating Christmas was the most shocking thing he'd ever heard, then looked down at the table sheepishly. It was probably insensitive to act like he was, even though he didn't mean anything by it.
Cyrus smiled at his boyfriend, used to this kind of reaction by this point in his life.
âI mean, I've been to Andi's and Buffy's houses for Christmas parties a couple times. And I do like cheesy Christmas music. I mean, who can resist Mariah Carey?â
Jonah smiled back, visibly relaxing, and grabbed a baby tater from the basket in the middle of the table. They were sitting at the Spoon on the first day of winter break, both happy to finally have time to spend together, just the two of them, since school was out for a couple weeks.
The two boys had been together for a couple months at that point. Cyrus finally came out to everyone at the end of 7th grade, but kept his crush on Jonah a secret. Over the summer between 7th and 8th grade, Andi and Jonah broke up and a November of 8th grade, Jonah came out as bi. Then, finally, right after starting high school, Cyrus told Jonah he liked him and the two started dating. They still ended spending most of their time with the Good Hair Crew, plus Marty, though. So a break from school was the perfect chance for dates.
âSo,â Jonah said after a minute of eating in silence. âWould you wanna come over to my house for Christmas? Or, I guess, a family Christmas party.â
Cyrus smiled again. âYeah! When?â
âSaturday.â
Cyrus nodded. âI'll have to ask my mom, but it shouldn't be a problem.â
Jonah smiled back at him, dimples as pronounced as always and Cyrus ate another baby tater to smother the butterflies he still got in his stomach whenever Jonah Beck smiled at him.
...
Saturday came and Cyrus found himself at Jonah's door, shuffling his feet nervously as he rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer. His mom had agreed to him going to the party, but not without a lot of muttering about âkids these days, not respecting tradition and...â That's when Cyrus stopped listening.
The party also meant the first time Cyrus was meeting Jonah's parents. Despite being friends for over a year, somehow Cyrus never ended up going over to Jonah's house. They were always at Andi's or Buffy's or the Spoon. He did meet Jonah's dad once, when he picked him up from school, but that was before they were dating, so it didn't really count.
It took a minute of standing at the door, listening to music playing and people laughing before Jonah opened up the door and his face broke into a huge smile seeing Cyrus standing there.
âHey Cy-Guy! Come in.â
He moved out of the way and gestured for Cyrus to come inside the house, then walked with him into a big living room covered in Christmas decorations. The room was filled with people, standing and sitting all around it, some eating and some talking. A couple kids were in the middle of the room, dancing to the Christmas music Cyrus heard outside.
âCyrus, welcome to the Beck family Christmas party!â Jonah said. A few of the people in the room looked up and waved at him, but then went right back to what they were doing. More quietly, Jonah added on, âI'd introduce you to everyone, but it would take a long time with my family. Especially my aunt Sarah, she'd have you talking for hours.â
Cyrus smiled as Jonah grabbed his hand and lead him through the living room and around the dancing kids.
âMy cousins,â Jonah said, patting one of them on the shoulder as they passed them.
He took Cyrus into the kitchen, where a couple more people were standing, including a man Cyrus recognized as Jonah's dad. They went over to the man and Jonah gestured at him and the brunette woman standing next to him, who had the same dimples as Jonah.
âCyrus, this my mom and dad. Mom, dad, this is my boyfriend.â
The couple smiled at Cyrus and the man took his hand and shook it.
âNice to finally meet you, Cyrus,â Jonah's mom said. âWe hear a lot about you.â
Cyrus glanced over at Jonah long enough to see him look down at the floor and blush, then returned his gaze to Jonah's parents.
âNice to meet you too, Mrs. Beck. Thanks for inviting me to your party.â
âOf course. And you can call me Molly.â She looked over at Jonah. âHe's so polite, Jonah.â
Jonah rolled his eyes and sighed deeply. âOkay, mom, we're gonna go get food now!â
He dragged Cyrus away from his parents and Cyrus awkwardly waved back at them. Jonah took Cyrus over to the food table and grabbed a plate, loading it down with snacks.
âSorry my parents are so embarrassing,â Jonah said.
âYour parents are only embarrassing to you. I think they were nice. And your mom is nothing compared to mine.â
Jonah was quiet for a beat then said, âGood point. And at least I only have one of them.â
Cyrus sighed. âWe don't need to bring my step mom into this too.â
Jonah laughed and said, âDo you want something to eat? My aunt's mac and cheese is the best.â
Cyrus shrugged and picked up a plate, filling it up with food, then looked at Jonah with a mock frown.
âNo baby taters?â He asked.
Jonah laughed and shook his head. âSorry, no baby taters.â
âChristmas obviously can't be that great if it doesn't include baby taters.â
Jonah laughed again and the two boys walked back into the living room, managing to find a seat in the corner of one of the couches, although they did have squeeze together a bit. While they ate, a few of Jonah's assorted family members came up to them and introduced themselves to Cyrus. When Jonah got up to go to the bathroom, his aunt Sarah came up and started talking to Cyrus and he quickly figured out Jonah was right about her. Over the course of 5 minutes, Cyrus learned everything there was to know about her 3 kids, her job, her mother, and she was just getting started on her hobbies when Jonah returned and made up an excuse to pull Cyrus away.
âOh my god, you weren't kidding about her,â Cyrus said when they were leaning against the hallway wall.
âSorry, I didn't expect her to pounce while I was gone.â
âIt's okay. At least you got me out when you did.â
Jonah laughed and grabbed Cyrus's hand, interlocking their fingers together.
âSo, are you having fun? Despite aunt Sarah.â
Cyrus laughed too and nodded. âYeah, I am. Your family is all pretty great. And really cool about the fact that you brought a boyfriend.â
Jonah nodded. âYeah, I'm pretty lucky with that. Funny story, I actually came out to all of them at this party last year.â
âReally?â
Jonah nodded again. âYeah, that was a fun experience. I told my parents a few weeks before that. I mean, you know, I told all of you after I came out to them. But, I don't know, I was just in the middle of all of this-â he gestured towards the living room â-and just thought 'why not.'â
âHow did they react to that?â
âBasically, I stood in the middle of the room and said 'Hey, I just wanted everyone to know that I'm bi. As in I like girls and boys both.' And everyone just stared at me. A few people said they were happy for me and proud of me. And then they went back to what they were doing like nothing happened.â
Cyrus laughed and shook his head.
âWow. That's cool, though, that no one made a big deal out of it.â
Jonah nodded. âSo, should we get back? I might be able to get my cousin to play All I Want for Christmas is You.â
Cyrus smiled and followed Jonah down the hallway towards the living room. When they reached the doorway, though, one of Jonah's uncles looked over at the two of them and stopped them.
âLook up, guys!â He said, pointing to the door frame above their heads.
Hanging from the wood above them was a small sprig of mistletoe with a red ribbon wrapped around the top of it. Cyrus and Jonah looked at each other and both of them blushed deeply.
âCome on, it's tradition!â Someone else in the room called out.
âWe don't have to,â Jonah whispered. âI know it's awkward.â
Cyrus didn't answer. Instead, he dropped Jonah's hand and wrapped his arms around the other boy's waist, pulling him closer. He then leaned in and connected their lips gently. The kiss was soft and short, but enough to fill both of them with butterflies. When they pulled apart, everyone in the room started clapping and a couple people whistled. One of Jonah's little cousins could be heard saying âew!â loudly. And Jonah and Cyrus were looking at each other and blushing.
Finally, the room quieted down again and the focus shifted off of the two boys. They took the opportunity to walk into the room and find room on the couch again. They sat together, talking with their hands intertwined, for a few minutes, until the familiar beginning notes of Mariah Carey played over the speaker. Cyrus's face broke into a huge smile and he stood up, facing Jonah and holding his hand. He started lip syncing the words to Jonah dramatically, dancing a little to the music, and Jonah laughed at how adorable his boyfriend was. Cyrus managed to pull Jonah into a standing position and the two of them danced to the song, lip syncing back and forth to each other.
...
When the party started winding down, Cyrus called his mom to come pick him up and he and Jonah walked to the front door together.
âFinal verdict?â Jonah asked when they were standing on the porch.
âThis was really fun. But I always have fun with you.â
Jonah smiled and looked down at the ground, a blush creeping onto his cheeks again.
âSorry again, about the whole mistletoe thing.â
Cyrus shrugged. âLike I'd complain about getting to kiss you.â
âStill. It was weird, kissing in front of my whole family.â
Cyrus nodded a little and took a step closer to Jonah, his heartbeat picking up a bit.
âYeah, a little. Especially since we've only ever had like one real kiss before that.â
Jonah nodded and locked eyes with Cyrus, feeling his heart speed up too.
âWe can make up for that, though,â Cyrus whispered, taking another step closer to Jonah. Their faces were only inches apart now, and they were staring into each other eyes and holding their breath.
Finally, Cyrus reached his hands up and grabbed Jonah's face gently, then kissed him. It was much slower this time, but still just as soft. Jonah leaned into the kiss and wrapped his arms around Cyrus's waist. They kept kissing for a minute, losing track exactly how long it was before they pulled apart. Jonah's arms stayed around Cyrus's waist and Cyrus wrapped his around Jonah's neck.
âMerry Christmas, Jonah Beck,â he whispered.
Jonah smiled brightly at him and gave him another quick kiss before saying, âBest one I've ever had.â
âBut next year, you're coming over for Hanukkah.â
âNext year?â Jonah asked with a teasing tone.
Cyrus blushed and looked down at the ground the best he could in their position.
âOkay,â Jonah said. âNext year.â
Cyrus looked back up at him, smiling, and they kissed again and stayed together on the porch until Cyrus's mom pulled up to take him home.
