From an ask that was sent to disappeareddraws. I’m intrigued by the idea of Stanley’s adult memories slipping in as dreams.
The sadist in me likes the idea of Stanley describing a dream of something terrifying and violent that happened to him in prison to Ford. Stanley just sees it as a nightmare because the idea that it might be part of his past wouldn’t occur to him. But Ford realizes what it most likely is. He’d never thought much about what the details of Stan’s life were like during those ten years, and now he gets a tiny little glimpse of how much he’s been through.
Imagine Stanley already calming down once the story’s told, feeling embarrassed about getting so scared over a nightmare, snuggling up and saying it was just a stupid dream. And Ford staring off into the distance saying “Yes...just a dream.”
I’m imagining this happening a few more times. Stanley having nightmares about some of his worst experiences living as a drifter and Ford having to hear about every single one of them, feeling more and more guilty each time. Then one night, Ford is up late working and he goes upstairs to get something from the kitchen. When he exits the vending machine he hears sobbing coming from where Stanley’s hammock is strung up in the gift shop. He investigates and finds Stanley completely inconsolable. Like, for several minutes he’s just crying too hard to even talk and Ford starts to get worried, imagining all kinds of trauma based on the stories he’s been hearing over the past few days. Wondering what happened to him while he was on the road that could leave this kind of a mark.
Finally, Stanley starts to calm down. His crying mostly subsides, and he looks up at Ford with big, red eyes and says “I dreamed you hated me.”
