LONGHAUL: A Constructicon who values his job more than his passions
DIRTBOSS: A Cranky old bot that values logic, realism and a proper budget more than the dreams of his workers.
MIXMASTER: A long-retired musician who helps Bonecrusher get his groove, and
SETTING: (The construction site: a construction site building a big structure. Mixmasterâs house: The place where Bonecrusher learns the Holotar. The stage: The place where the concert is held. The final location is a restaurant )
Act I, Scene I
[BONECRUSHER]
(Heavy metal music playing, BONECRUSHER is playing drums)
YEAHHH!!!
WOOO!!!!
[LONGHAUL]
QUIET DOWN!!!! IâM TRYINâ TA WORK HERE YOU RUSTY BAG OF BOLTS!
[BONECRUSHER]
Oh, plug up your exhaust pipes, Longhaul! I just wanna have a little fun!
[LONGHAUL]
(Pans up to show that they are in a construction site)
Yeah, you can have fun. BUT DONâT DO IT ON COMPANY HOURS! WE HAVE TO BUILD THIS BUILDING FOR OUR BOSS IN TWO WEEKS!
[DIRTBOSS]
(Turns, noticing BONECRUSHER and LONGHAUL arguing)
AHEM! Do I need to seperate youse two!? Or do I need to fire someone!
[BOTH]
No, Dirtboss.
[DIRTBOSS]
(Sounding serious)
Good. Causeâ if I see youse two arguinâ, or Mr. Beethoven starts singinâ again, Iâm gonna fire youse both! Youse canât afford to loose a job in this economy! Disâ placeâs founders can only supply about two weeks worth of scrap to build this thing. Any more, and itâs on us. âSpecially with this war goinâ on⌠Now scram!
(Bonecrusher and Longhaul leave the building, Dirtboss pulls Bonecrusher aside]
[DIRTBOSS]
Listen here. And listen closely. Youâre on thin ice, bucko. Either do it at home, or can it forever.
[MIXMASTER]
(Walks over to BONECRUSHER and LONGHAUL)
Lemme guess? Crusher here was singing? And it got him into trouble?
[LONGHAUL]
He was goofinâ off playinâ the drums!
[BONECRUSHER]
(Slightly annoyed)
I never get to have any fun! Why do you guys act so rude?!
[MIXMASTER]
(Chuckling slightly)
Câmon Crusher! Letâs go back to work! You can practice with me later.
[BONECRUSHER]
(Confused and somewhat excited)
You play..? You play the drums?! I⌠You⌠You never told me!
[MIXMASTER]
Before I was a cement truck, howâd you think Iâd get the name Mixmaster? I played in a band before I joined this crew⌠Too bad we donât have a band nameâŚ
[BONECRUSHER]
I⌠Wow.. Uh⌠Sweet!
Act I, Scene 2
(Bonecrusher puts the directions into his gps to look for Mixmasterâs house. He is almost there when the sun starts to set, and when he reaches there, he is in complete darkness.)
[BONECRUSHER]
So⌠This is your place?! Is that a⌠No⌠It canât! Is that an X-Grade 1984 Holotar? (Bonecrusher inspects it, looking at it with awe and scrutiny. He notices a signature.) WAIT!? YOU GOT IT SIGNED AT BOTCON!? BY SOUNDWAVE?! Iâd kill to play the drums to your guitar!
[MIXMASTER]
You remind me of myself when I was but a wee little sparkling. You have talent, kid.
Alright, show me what you got, kid!
[BONECRUSHER]
(Pulling a holo-file from his pocket)
Hey, I⌠Uh⌠Wrote this songâŚ. Would you want to play it with me?
[MIXMASTER]
Yeah! Letâs get our groove on!
(The two begin two play, and have tons of fun. Bonecrusher learns how to play the guitar, and Mixmaster learns the drums.)
[MIXMASTER]
You think we can do it?
[BONECRUSHER]
(Looking confident in his abilities. After all, they created a few bangers in Mixmasterâs basement.)
Hell yeah, we are! Letâs do it.
(The musical duo go to work the next day. They go to Dirtbossâs office.)
[DIRTBOSS]
(Reading the Cybertronian Times, notices Bonecrusher.)
Eh..? What are youse two doing up so early in the solar cycle?
[MIXMASTER]
We have a proposition for ya, Dirtman!
[DIRTBOSS]
And what is that, I ask?
[BONECRUSHER]
We want to hold a concert to boost funding and morale for the site!
[DIRTBOSS]
(Spits out cyber coffee)
You want to do WHAT?!?
[BONECRUSHER]
Yep! So are you in, or not?
[DIRTBOSS]
NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT!
[MIXMASTER]
Why, Dirtboss? You yourself said we, as a crew, need more funding. Didnât you say we only have two weeks left before they shut us down?
[DIRTBOSS]
We are construction workers. Our funding will come through hard work. I canât let any other possible investors see this! Youse two are gonna be out there playing absolute garbage, and Iâm going to have to answer for it!
[BONECRUSHER]
Mix here has contacts to famous people. He might get some celebrities to come to our show. Oh, I donât know⌠maybe Soundwave?
(Dirtboss raises his eyebrows with intrigue.)
[BONECRUSHER]
Hmm⌠I bet Mixmaster could get a hold of the mighty Megatron, No?
[DIRTBOSS]
M⌠Megatron?! Here?!
[MIXMASTER]
If thatâs not enough, I could get the legendary warrior OPTIMUS PRIME to comeâŚ
[DIRTBOSS]
SWEET PRIMUS!! I- I mean WEâRE GONNA BE RICH!
[BONECRUSHER]
(Whispering to Mixmaster)
You actually know Soundwave, Optimus Prime, and Megatron?
[MIXMASTER]
(Whispering slyly)
No. Itâs a little white lie, but itâll make Dirtboss happy.
[DIRTBOSS]
(Aside)
If theyâse got Megatron and Optimus on this, Iâm gonna make more money than ever! HeheâŚ
(To Bonecrusher and Mixmaster)
Hmm⌠Youse twoâs idea is so stupid it might work⌠Lemme hear youse music. Then weâll seeâŚ
[BONECRUSHER]
Aight Mix, letâs fire it up!
(The two play a song for their boss.)
[DIRTBOSS]
Iâm in! Youse two outdid yourselves! Wait⌠we gotta think of a name for all of youse!
[MIXMASTER]
Well, it is Crusherâs band, so let him decide!
[BONECRUSHER]
I got it! How about Bonecrusher and the Builder Boys?
[DIRTBOSS]
That name absolutely sucks as-
[MIXMASTER]
(Shoots Dirtboss a menacing glare, causing Dirtboss to cower)
Itâs perfect Bonecrusher! Letâs use thisâŚ
(Turns to Dirtboss)
âŚNo matter what anyone else saysâŚ
[BONECRUSHER]
YES! Letâs roll!
Act I, Scene 3
(Itâs the day of the big concert. The entire construction crew is there, consisting of Skipjack, Bonecrusher, Mixmaster, Longhaul, Scrapper, Rollaway, Dirtboss, and Scavenger. Everyone is a little nervous.)
[BONECRUSHER]
Are you guys ready for this concert?
[ALL]
YEAH!
[MIXMASTER]
Holotarists, tune all of your holotars to the correct nanofrequency. We need to rehearse!
[ALL]
You got it, boss!
(Bonecrusher looks out into the dense crowd and has a mild panic attack. He cannot catch his breath when Dirtboss walks up behind him.)
[BONECRUSHER]
I donât think I can do thisâŚ
[DIRTBOSS]
Kid, youâve come so far. You can play the guitar well. You got everybody together. You even convinced me to join in on this. You can do this.
[LONGHAUL]
Yeah! You managed to unite us as a band!
[MIXMASTER]
You made new friends and taught me the drums!
[OPTIMUS]
Your singing has brought people together from both factions!
[SOUNDWAVE]
Soundwave: Agrees with Optimus.
[MEGATRON]
You inspired our forces in the fight against the Quintessons! Your tunes ROCK!
[BONECRUSHER]
Thank you guys s⌠HOLY SLOG! SOUNDWAVE!? MEGATRON?! OPTIMUS PRIME!? YOU ACTUALLY CAME?! MIXMASTER TOLD ME IT WAS A LIE!
[OPTIMUS]
Your music was so good, our soldiers charged into battle humming the tunes. When we asked where it came from, we heard it was from you.
[SOUNDWAVE]
Statement: Bonecrusherâs music is amazing.
[MIXMASTER]
Funny story, I actually lied to Dirtboss, so this is a pleasant surprise.
[DIRTBOSS]
Wait? What! I thoughtâŚ
[MIXMASTER]
Never mind that⌠Theyâre here!
[BONECRUSHER]
Thanks. Youâre right⌠I got this⌠(Gulps, swallowing his insecurities.)
(Walking out onto the stage with swagger in his walk.)
ARE YOU READY!?
[CROWD]
YEAH!!
[BONECRUSHER]
Before I perform, Iâd like to say a few words.
Thank you.
Thank you all!
You helped me when I needed it most.
You allowed me to share when I needed it most.
I now will play a special song for you.
(Bonecrusher gets his âBuilder Boysâ out on the stage, and they play the cover of the Transformers theme song from The Transformers: The Movie. The crowd cheers wildly , and Bonecrusher is excited.)
[BONECRUSHER]
Alright, bots nâ cons, ready for the next round?
(The Builder Boys go play another song. They continue to do this until all of the group is dehydrated)
Act I, Scene 4
(The Builder Boys go to a restaurant to celebrate their concert. Bonecrusher counts up the money gained at the concert.)
[BONECRUSHER]
Dear Primus! Weâve got enough money to fund this site for another two years!
[DIRTBOSS]
Yes! We needed this!
[LONGHAUL]
Crusher, you did it!
[MIXMASTER]
Iâm happy for you, but I have one one gripe with this band⌠I donât like the name.
âBuilder Boysâ is cute and all, but we need something new, something catchyâŚ
[BONECRUSHER]
Well⌠I canât think of anything new⌠Iâll tryâŚ
[DIRTBOSS]
Fair⌠We are robots, so how about Builderbots?
[MIXMASTER]
Well we are Decepticons, so what about Buildercons?
[BONECRUSHER]
No, no! None of these sound rightâŚ
I got it!
[DIRTBOSS]
Hit it, Crusher!
[BONECRUSHER]
How aboutâŚ
The CONSTRUCTICONS!
(The Constructicons roll away in their vehicle forms.)
Wheeljack looked at Bulkhead with genuine confusion, his servos resting on his hips.
âIâm just saying that Professor Sumdac and I got this,â the green mech insisted. âI mean, Iâm an expert space-bridge technician and heâs a brilliant scientist-â
âAnd Iâm a scientist and engineer who has experience workinâ on space-bridges,â the Wrecker reminded him. âShouldnât this be an âall hands on deckâ sorta deal? Weâre in crisis mode, arenât we?â
Bulkhead held his servos up, smiling a little awkwardly. âNo offense, Wheeljackâbut the last space-bridge you helped with sent you to an alternate universe.â
Wheeljackâs optic twitchedâand around the lab, the other members of the team and the Sumdacs watched with wide eyes or optics.
Bumblebee actually raised a servo to cover his mouth, beating Prowl to the punch.
âWhat I mean to say is that you should probably be out in the field,â Bulkhead quickly tried to recover. âYâknow, helping Prime and the others hunt the Decepticons. Leave the space-bridge to the experts.â
Wheeljack still seemed upset for some reason.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) for Bulkhead, Optimus intervened before the discussion could continue.
âBulkhead.â The Prime placed a servo on his shoulder. âA word?â
âWhat?â Bulkhead asked as the Prime led him aside. âIâm just saying-â
âIâm not sure if I want Wheeljack anywhere near a Decepticon right now,â Optimus quickly cut him off, and Bulkhead blinked before his optics widened. âYou get what Iâm saying?â
â⌠Heâs doing a lot better,â Bulkhead tried, though he couldnât make himself sound any more certain than he felt. âBesides, itâs not like youâll be going after Megatron or Shockwave. Fightingâll probably be good for him, let him blow off some steam.â
âIâm not so sure about that,â Optimus protested quietly, then he sighed. âIâm not sure⌠So, Iâd just feel a lot better if he was here. Besides, you should probably start mending some bridgesâfigurative ones, that is.â
Bulkhead blinked again. âWhaddya mean?â
âI mean, you didnât tell any of us that you were good with this stuff,â Optimus said, gesturing to the recovered space-bridge materials. âDonât you think Wheeljack might be wondering why you two havenât been working together all this time to get him home?â
âI told him I read about this stuff back on the farm,â Bulkhead tried, though he was growing increasingly uneasy.
He didnât want to talk about this.
He didnât want to talk about space-bridges and Wheeljack together, not then or ever.
âBut you didnât tell him you were the best in the field, Bulkhead. Thatâs different, and you know it,â Optimus chided, then his face fell as he looked away. âHeâs been away from home for so long now, and heâs taken some real heavy hits recently. Iâm worried. You know that he doesnât like to just⌠say things. When it got bad, we had to corner him and push it out.â
Huh. Wheeljack had been away from his home for a long time, hadnât he?
But his home was a bad place! It was probably a good thing that he got away for a little whileâespecially since his team back home clearly didnât know how to help him.
Well, this team was still learningâbut at least they were trying their best! They were taking care of him... Werenât they?
âHm.â Bulkhead glanced over at the Wrecker, who was apparently being reassured about something by Professor Sumdac. â⌠You really think he might be mad at me?â
âI donât know. I just-â Optimus sighed again. âI just think he should be here. Let him see the science.â He crossed his arms. âWhen this is all over, we promised we would get him home. He has to know that he can trust you to help him.â
Bulkhead hadnât thought about it like that.
He was suddenly very worried.
âOh, geez.â Bulkhead cringed. âPrime, I-â
A string of beeps rang out, and Wheeljack glanced at Prowlâs scanner when the he brought it up before looking at Optimus. âJust got a hit on Lugnut.â He gestured to the door, his optics narrowed. âLetâs get movinâ.â
The Prime frowned. âDidnât you want to-?â
âEh, leave it to the experts.â Wheeljack waved it off as he turned away, and he was the first one on the lift. âCome on.â
Optimus, Prowl, Bumblebee, and Ratchet hesitantly followed him, leaving Bulkhead standing there as the lift lowered and left him and the Sumdacs behind.
â⌠Scrap,â the green mech whispered.
He didnât want to talk about Wheeljack and space-bridges together.
He didnât want to send his friend back to a dark and dangerous place where no one was trying to help him get any better.
He didnât want to say âgoodbyeâ, to lose one of his teammates forever.
But he also didnât want to hurt his friend, to make Wheeljack think that he wanted to hurt him and keep him trapped.
So, what was Bulkhead supposed to do?
He wasnât really an expert in the sort of bridge that Optimus said needed fixed, but he needed to figure it outâand quickly.
âŚ
As the team (minus Bulkhead) raced down a highway just outside of Detroit, Optimus had a bad feeling.
Wheeljack had been doing better recently, but the Prime was more conscious than ever of the care that had to be taken with the Wreckerâs weighted mind.
He had hoped to ease Wheeljack back into the fight, and to let him get some work in on the space-bridge himself.
Unfortunately, it didnât look like that was going to happen. They were on the hunt for Lugnut, so⌠pretty counterproductive.
At least it wasnât one of the Starscream clones or Blitzwing. Count your blessings.
âSignalâs moving due north, and weâre closing in fast!â Optimus reported after checking his scanner.
Ever since Professor Sumdac had rendered the Decepticon signal-dampeners useless, a whole new dimension had been added to the Autobot assignment on Earth.
The hunted could become the hunters, and vice versa. It was exhilarating, but they couldnât let it go to their heads.
âWell, itâll be nice to have the element of surprise for a change.â Bumblebee remarked dryly, driving side-by-side with Prowl to the Primeâs right.
Wheeljack and Ratchet were to the Primeâs left, with Optimus and Ratchet at either side of the Wrecker.
âThe signalâs slowing down,â Optimus noted, then his frame tensed. âNow, itâs heading due south!â
âHeâs heading right for us!â Bumblebee shouted as they all skidded to a halt and transformed.
Prowlâs optics narrowed. âSo much for âthe element of surpriseâ.â
Lugnut was dropping out of the sky, his right fist reared back with his Punch prepared for detonation as he let out a loud yell.
Optimus got ready to move, but then he heard the should of shifting metal at his side.
Blast!
A beam of blue light flew up and struck Lugnutâs servo, detonating the Punch.
An explosion went off in the air above the Autobots, a burst of orange, red, and blue before plumes of gray smoke filled the sky.
Lugnut dropped down onto the pavement on his back, groaning in pain before his optics closed and he went still. His right servo was charred and damaged, smoke rising from it.
âNah.â Wheeljack lowered his cannon and shifted it back into a servo. âI think that still surprised âim.â The other Autobots looked at their Wrecker with wide optics, and he looked at them with a raised optic-brow. âSo⌠whatâd you think of the fireworks?â
âYou are actually insane,â Bumblebee decided, then he grinned. âBut that was awesome!â
âHair-trigger reflexes, and a crack shot,â Prowl remarked quietly as Wheeljack drew a set of extra-large stasis-cuffs from his storage compartment and started to walk over to the fallen Decepticon. âNo more pulling your punches, then?â
âIf thatâs alright with you,â Wheeljack said as he cuffed the Decepticonâs wrists. âThought it was about time, even if I am a little extreme.â
âWell⌠it gets the job done,â Optimus said, still taken aback. âItâs just rather intense.â He managed to raise an optic-brow. âYouâve really been holding back, havenât you?â
âHeh.â Wheeljack turned back to face him, giving a small grin. âItâs funny: I wasnât really thinkinâ about it until that day with Blitzwing, yâknow? Most of our problems were caused by humans, or I was tryinâ to deal with all of you beinâ scattered and scramblinâ or hurt.â
âOr you were hurt yourself,â Prowl added, and the Wrecker looked away awkwardly. âOr -well- in the water.â
âYeahâŚâ Wheeljack cringed. âGotta love all the water battles.â
âSoâŚâ Optimus blinked. âWe didnât have an opportunity to see you fight like you do back home until that day with Blitzwing, when you were protecting Bumblebee and Ratchet.â
âHm.â Wheeljack shrugged. âAnd look at how that turned out.â He sighed. âBut⌠you took the PG-grade censorinâ the wrong way, figured I was coddlinâ you. Maybe I was.â He looked at his teammates with a frown. âBut while Iâm not planninâ on tellinâ you too much about where Iâm from in any kind of detail⌠not yet⌠I guess you could say Iâm done toninâ my fights down.â He gestured to Lugnut. ââCause theyâre fightinâ to kill, so⌠someone here has to be ready to make that same call, if it comes down to it.â He shook his head. âAnd even if you eventually hafta see it happen, I never want you fellas to hafta do it yourselves. Itâs not about beinâ kids versus adults or even soldiers⌠Youâre never ready for the first time you snuff a spark.â
The Wreckerâs words ushered in a quiet.
What he had said, the openness of it allâthat was very⌠different, for Wheeljack. The teamâs Wrecker played his cards close to the chest, let pressure inside build up until he collapsed in on himself like a dying star becoming a black hole.
Telling them what was on his mind, it seemed like progressâlike he was improving.
And Optimus felt a rush of protectiveness.
He already understood why Bulkhead tried to avoid any affiliation with sending Wheeljack back to his reality, but he brieflyâtraitorouslyâthought that the idea wasnât so bad.
Ultra Magnus had âbots on it, right?
Why did it have to be them? Because they were his team, because theyâd do it right?
Of course.
But⌠why did it have to be them?
And why did it have to be him?
â⌠Heâs not wrong,â Ratchet agreed at last, and Optimus snapped out of his thoughts to glance at the field-tech in surprise.
âRatchet?â Bumblebee asked, confusedâand Prowl rested a servo on his shoulder.
Whatever the field-tech meant, whether it was something that heâd seen in others or actually experienced himself, it was left there.
And Optimus just let it be left there.
Ratchet was a field-tech, after all. Heâd been there to heal, not hurt. It was probably just something patients spoke about.
Like Omega Supreme, maybe.
Ratchet wouldnât blame himself for all of the lives his charge took, would he?
Optimus couldnât dwell on it for long.
No one could.
Wheeljack was frowning like he had something more to say, then he blinked as there was a loud chirp over the comms.
:Bulkhead to Prime,: a familiar voice spoke quietly across the channel. In the background, someone was yelling âyou got a problem?â amidst metal clangs and grunts of pain. :I think weâve got a problem.:
â⌠And yâknow, I was actually havinâ a decent day.â Wheeljack sighed, his shoulders sagging.
Lugnut groaned behind him, and the Wrecker deadpanned as he raised a foot before letting it swing back to kick the Decepticonâs leg.
âSo⌠what do we do with him?â Bumblebee awkwardly gestured to Lugnut. âI mean, we canât just leave a Decepticon out in the openâcuffed or not.â
âOur friendâs more important,â Optimus said.
Wheeljack glanced to the side, eyeing the river, then he looked back at his teammates. â⌠Sure looks like he could use a bath, doesnât he?â The other Autobots blinked. âWhat? You guys are waterproof, right?â
âYou are actually going to the Pit,â Bumblebee told him, shaking his head.
Wheeljack smirked as he grabbed Lugnutâs arm. âNever took the dark stuff, so thatâs fairly unlikely. However, if I come back with purple optics and a ton of upgrades, just do me a huge favor and shootâmâkay?â
âWait, what?â Optimus asked, confused.
Wheeljack looked him dead in the optics, his face neutral. âWhat.â
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
As it turned out, finding Bulkhead and his âproblemâ was harder than expected.
At the tower, the rest of the Autobots could only find a really confused Sari and a frantic Professor Sumdac working on a new plasma dynamic thruster by himself.
The professor did, however, mention Mixmaster and Scrapperâwhich Optimus could instantly tell rubbed Wheeljack the wrong way.
Those two plus Bulkhead equaling a frightened Sumdac⌠shouldnât have been a trend.
But it was.
So, Wheeljack was in a really bad mood.
âFor fragâs sake, youâd think heâd learn,â the Wrecker grumbled as the team patrolled the town, searching for their friend.
It was the early hours of the morning, andâas alwaysâhaving no stasis just made Wheeljackâs disposition worse. He was tired, he was worried, he was frustrated, and he was hurt.
Recovering, thankfullyâbut still hurt.
And just when heâd been showing progressâŚ
One step forward.
Better not let the Wrecker take two steps back.
âBulkheadâs always been one to see the good in others,â Optimus reminded him gently. âEven when they donât choose to act on that good, he wants to see the very best in them.â
âBut he has to know he canât see things just because he wants to,â Wheeljack protested, his engine revving a big as he got worked-up. âI mean, those two are bad for him! They push him around, make him pretend to be somethinâ heâs not so he doesnât get left behind! He has to know that itâs not right, by now.â
âAnd if he doesnât, weâll help him,â Optimus said quietly. Patience was easier to manage, now that he knew more about his friend and could try to interpret his words. âBecause thatâs what we do, for our teammates.â
Wheeljack huffed, then he sighed. âHe better not have gotten himself into trouble.â
âIf he has, then weâll just help him with that too,â Optimus said, and he snorted as the Wrecker huffed again.
âShuddup,â Wheeljack insisted, but his voice lacked any bite.
âWeâll find him,â the Prime assured his friend, relieved by the hope that heâd managed to ease his mood. âDonât worry.â They suddenly came upon a gas station, the pavement around it covered in oil and the premises surrounded by flashing police cars. â⌠Okay, worry a little.â
âOh, ya think?!â
âŚ
There were calls coming in from all around the city. Wherever there was oil, the Constructiconsâjoined by a new, smaller, and nastier third memberâwere there to take it.
Captain Fanzone also informed the Autobots, after they found him next to a toppled transport truck, that Bulkhead was A) chasing after the three thieves on his own and B) still defending his so-called âfriendsâ with claims that the trio was âgoodâ but âmisprogrammedâ.
The Autobots always seemed to be two steps behind, missing the âCons and Bulkheadâa dilemma which could only improve Wheeljackâs rapidly sliding mood, obviously.
âTheir signals are moving all around the city with great speed,â Prowl reported. âWhoever is leading this chase, they are efficient and they are taking steps to not be caught.â
âThere just had to be a new âCon with the slimmest shred of intelligence,â Wheeljack muttered. âIt must be my spark-day.â
âThere arenât many places left for them to go,â Optimus reasoned. âDetroitâs oil supply is almost completely dried-up.â
Wheeljack suddenly transformed and landed on his feet, and the others transformed as well before they turned around to look at him. The Wrecker glanced down, his brow furrowed, then he looked up at them with a smirk.
âYou know how you hit a movinâ target?â
âNaturally,â Prowl replied. âYou donât aim where it is, you aim-â He blinked, then he nodded in understanding. âWhere itâs going to be.â
Ratchet raised an optic-brow. âYou think you know where theyâre going?â
âPrime said it himself,â Wheeljack said, gesturing to Optimus. âDetroitâs oil supply is almost completely dried-up.â He crossed his arms. âSo, where would they go for more?â
â⌠The refinery,â Optimus realized.
Wheeljack nodded. âBingo.â He cringed. âAnd suddenly, all I can hear is what my team back home would say if they knew I was gonna go within a hundred klicks of that place.â
âWhatâs that?â Bumblebee asked, perplexed.
Wheeljack turned away, strangely stiff. âWell, uhâŚâ He sighed. â⌠Remember, Wheeljack: blasters and fuel-pumps donât mix.â
âThereâs a story there,â Ratchet decided, a little concerned as he gazed at his teammate.
Wheeljack nodded sharply. âYeah.â
The Wrecker suddenly transformed and drove off, and the others quickly transformed in order to follow him.
âŚ
As the Autobots drove along the freeway, another call came in from Bulkhead.
There were no words, just grunts of pain and the sounds of metal striking metal.
Bumblebee tried to reach out to the green mech, but there had been no response.
Not from him, at least.
:Heâs got an open comm-link!: A voice shouted.
Another replied. :Not for long.:
And just like that, the signal went dead.
So, naturally, Wheeljack decided that it was time to completely ignore all road safety laws.
And Optimus felt his Energon-pressure rising as he, Prowl, and Ratchet chased after the Wrecker. Bumblebee was managing to keep up with Wheeljack, but the Prime could see the surprise written all over his frame.
Wheeljack was fast.
âWheeljack, come on: youâre the one of us with no siren!â Optimus shouted. âYou need to slow down and drive alongside the group!â
âBulkheadâs in trouble!â Wheeljack protested, not reducing speed at all. âHe might already be hurt! We gotta get there, now!â
Prowl was suddenly going much faster.
Ratchet seemed to notice this, then he sped up.
Optimus wasnât sure what they were thinking, but Wheeljack talked to them a lot more than he talked to the Prime. He increased speed.
Maybe Bulkhead wasnât the only teammate in trouble.
Maybe Optimus had been right, and it was too soon.
He just hoped, pleading with the Allspark, that it wasnât too much.
âŚ
Wheeljack was already angry when he learned about Mixmaster, Scrapper, and some brand-new fragger messing with Bulkhead and tearing up the city.
He was even angrier when the team arrived at the refinery to find a shaken Professor Sumdac holding a plasma dynamic thruster, the human quickly explaining that the Constructicons were trying to blow up the refinery and that Bulkhead had only played along with them to protect him.
So, Bulkhead had learned his lesson from last timeâbut now, he had been dealing with a hostage crisis.
âReminder: where are we, with me outright killinâ âCons?â Wheeljack asked quietly, leaning slightly to the side so that he could address the question to Ratchet.
The field-tech glanced at him. âNot fans, but theyâre technically not on Elite Guard record. No need to report it.â
Wheeljack nodded, his eyebrows raising. âOh, thatâs convenient.â
âAnd thatâs a headache.â Ratchet sighed, and Wheeljack managed a smirk.
That smirk vanished when Bulkhead suddenly ran up, swinging⌠Mixmaster, attached to his wrecking-ball⌠and they all had to leap back to avoid getting crushed.
Wheeljack felt his fried nerves start to fray.
âPretty convincing act!â Bumblebee remarked as Optimus clutched Professor Sumdac to his chest, trying to shield him.
âSorry, guys!â Bulkhead shouted as he started to spin Mixmaster above his head again. âCanât help it! Someoneâs making me do this!â
Wheeljack blinked, raising an optic-brow, then he noticed a little red dot on his friendâs helmet.
What the-?
âYou got that right,â a voice remarked, and Wheeljack glanced behind Bulkhead to see two figures approaching: Scrapper, and the smaller Constructicon that Fanzone reporter. It was the small one who had spoken, and Wheeljack hated him already. âIâm the boss around here, Dirtboss! Now, clamp that jaw and dent their fenders so that we can finish this job!â
Bulkhead charged, but Optimus sprayed him in the face with one of his fire-extinguishers and blinded himâknocking him off-balance and sending him and Mixmaster falling.
Scrapper charged, his drill ready, but Bumblebee used his heel-wheels to zip around the larger mech and leap over him before he could land a blow. âStrike!â He ducked another swipe. âSwing and a miss!â
âWill you slag that annoying little pipsqueak, already?!â Dirtboss demanded.
Bumblebeeâs optics narrowed. âWho are you calling âpipsqueakâ, short-stuff?!â
Scrapper tried to strike Bumblebee again, but the smaller mech leapt back and blocked two more blows with his sparking stingers.
âBumblebee, watch the sparks!â Prowl warned him. âThereâs oil everywhere!â
Bumblebee blinked. âRight! Blasters and fuel-pumps donât mix!â
Hearing that, Wheeljack cringed. âOh, thatâs not gonna go away any time soonâŚâ
The Wrecker blinked as Bulkhead recovered and ran at Optimus, trying to strike him while the Prime evaded and tried to reason with him.
âBulkhead, itâs me: Prime! I donât wanna hurt you!â
âI-I know!â Bulkhead replied shakily. âNeither do I!â
Wheeljackâs optics narrowed and turned on the new Constructicon.
âAlright, thatâs enough,â he decided, then he turned and marched over towards Bulkhead. âI apologize for this in advance.â
âHuh?â Bulkhead blinked as Wheeljack dropped onto a crouch, then he yelped as the other mech swept his legs with a kick and sent him falling to the oil-slicked ground.
âHold âim down!â Wheeljack shouted, and Optimus complied as Ratchet ran over. âGet that thing outta his head, and get him loose from that piece of scrap.â
âHey!â Mixmaster complained.
Wheeljack shot a glare at him, then he turned his gaze on âDirtbossâ. âIâll deal with this.â
âOh, looks like weâve got ourselves a real tough guy.â Dirtboss raised his servos mockingly as the Wrecker strode towards him, then he crossed his arms. âYou think Iâm scared of you and your fancy moves, you big ballerina?!â
âYou just donât know when to shut up, do ya?â Wheeljack asked, his fists clenching. âA lesser âbot might say it was a Constructicon thing, but I think youâre just assholes.â
Scrapper disengaged from Bumblebee and Prowl, who were also protecting the professor, and went to charge at Wheeljack.
One glance from the Wrecker halted the âCon in his tracks, and Wheeljack simply raised an optic-brow and waited.
Scrapper just looked at him, then he frowned and stepped back before turning and running off into the refinery.
âHm.â Wheeljack tilted his head, then he turned his glare on Dirtboss again. âNow, you: you just had to take it a step further, didnât you? That little bug of yours⌠You like head-games, huh?â
âWhatâs it to ya?!â Dirtboss asked as the Wrecker arrived, the smaller mech resting his servos on his hips.
Wheeljack took a deep vent, then he gave a small smirk as his foot swung back. âHeh. Iâm glad you asked.â
CLANG!
The rest of the teamâincluding a recovering Bulkhead, who was working to free himself from Mixmasterâlooked up with wide optics.
Dirtboss soared through the air with a guttural scream and disappeared over the top of the giant oil drum, and they heard a loud-
SPLASH!
âWhatâs it to me?â Wheeljack asked, resting his servos on his hips. âMotive.â
âWell, thatâs the very last time we leave him unsupervised,â Bumblebee said dryly as Bulkhead spun Mixmaster around to try and release his wrecking-ball. âYou realize thatâs TWO âCons we have to fish out now, right?!â
Wheeljack snorted as he glanced back at the others. âWe? I canât swim.â
â⌠We hate you.â Bumblebee deadpanned.
Wheeljack chuckled. âI know.â He suddenly blinked. âUh, Bulkhead-â
Mixmaster suddenly came loose and went soaring through the air.
Scrapper, who was standing by the massive oil-drum, yelped as his friend crashed into himâand their scraping armor caused a spark.
The oil-slick ground burst into flames, and Wheeljackâs optics widened.
âOkay, we need to move!â He looked at his teammatesâthen he glanced back at the Constructicons as they managed to stand up, with Scrapperâs servo wedged in Mixmasterâs chest cavity. âCome on, letâs go!â
Scrapper looked up, surprised, then he frowned again as he went to step towards the Autobots.
âWhaddya doing, ya idiot?!â Mixmaster reeled back, and Scrapper snapped his gaze to his partner. âWeâre not going with them! Letâs get unstuck, grab what we can, and beat it!â
âBut-â Scrapper glanced at the Autobots again, then he looked back at Mixmaster. â⌠Right.â
As the duo staggered off, still stuck together, Wheeljack shook his head before looking at his team. âLetâs get outta here.â
âNo, we canât. We have to try and suppress this fire,â Optimus disagreed, stepping forward with his fire-extinguishers.
Wheeljack watched him try to suppress the fire warily. âPrime, itâs spread too far. Itâs gonna hit that container, and itâll all go upâus with it!â
âDude, what happened with you and fuel-pumps?â Bumblebee asked, looking at him with some real concern.
Wheeljack looked at him, frustrated. âIt was my second time on Earth, okay?! How the Pit was I supposed to know what the fragginâ fuelinâ stations looked like?!â
âOkay, Wheeljackâs right!â Optimusâs narrowed optics had gone wide. âWe canât contain the fire! That tankâs gonna blow!â
âBut perhaps we can transport it!â Professor Sumdac ran up, his latest creation still propped-up on his shoulder.
âWait!â Bumblebee interjected. âIsnât that the thing that sent Megatron transporting randomly around the galaxy?!â
âWell, yeah,â Bulkhead replied as he took the device in his servos and started to tinker with its settings. âBut I think I can reprogram it for a shorter distance.â
âI hope you know what youâre doing!â Was all Bumblebee had to say to that.
Bulkhead finished his adjustments, and he watched as the device began to glow.
He went to throw it⌠then, he stopped.
And Wheeljack blinked before reaching out to catch the device as it was tossed his way.
The Wrecker looked down at it, then he looked up as Bulkhead gave a small grin. âLob it.â
Wheeljack blinked again, then he gave a short chuckle as he turned to the oil container and wound up his arm. âHeh. Alright, then.â
The plasma dynamic thruster went soaring through the air, and it landed on the platform at the top of the container⌠right as Mixmaster and Scapper arrived there, having scaled the back of the giant tank.
Wheeljackâs optics widened when he saw them, then he sighed. Typical. âOh, for Pitâs sake-â
A blue orb formed around the tank just as the fire reached it, teleporting it out into Lake Erie.
The Autobots watched it drop, then Wheeljack got down on one knee to shield the professor as the tank detonated with force that shook the ground and a blast that lit up the night sky.
When he looked back at the site, he couldnât help but frown at the thought of the annoying Constructicons. At least it was quick.
Still, he thought he had Scrapper for a moment thereâwhatever that wouldâve meant.
Wheeljack was shaken from those thoughts when Bulkhead sighed in relief. âItâs over.â
âNot quite,â Optimus disagreed. âWe still have a Decepticon to haul away⌠A big Decepticon.â
âWho we dumped in Lake Erie to keep him out of trouble,â Prowl added.
Bumblebee crossed his arms. âSo, again: thatâs two âCons to fish out.â
âMake that one.â Ratchet was checking his scanner. âThat third Constructicon, he had to be made with an Allspark fragment. Now, Iâm not getting any reading in range.â
âHow hard did you kick him?â Optimus asked, bewildered, and Wheeljack shrugged.
He had a bad feeling. He didnât like the idea of Dirtboss being left unaccounted for.
âHey, Wheeljack,â Bulkhead spoke up, and the Wrecker looked at him. âNice lob.â
Wheeljackâs frame immediately tensed at that, then he managed a grin. âHeh. Thanks.â
He didnât know why Bulkhead looked so sad.
âŚ
Unfortunately, Dirtboss wouldnât be the only âCon who managed to give them the slip.
When the Autobots returned to the site of their earlier entanglement just before dawn, after returning Professor Sumdac to the tower⌠Lugnut was gone, as was his signal.
So, the team returned to the Plant in the early morningâdrained and empty-handed.
Bulkhead transformed at the front door and watched as Prowl, Bumblebee, and Ratchet made their way towards their rooms.
Wheeljack lingered for a moment, looking at the hole in Bulkheadâs helmet before regarding him with a frown. âBetter get that patched, once Ratchetâs rested-up.â He raised an optic-brow. âAnd, you-⌠You just let me know if you wanna talk about thatâalright, Bulkhead?â
âIâm okay,â the green mech told him. âAnd, uh⌠You didnât have to -yâknow- apologize in advance. Iâm glad you stopped me.â He shifted awkwardly. âAnd⌠that you kicked him.â
âHeh.â Wheeljack grinned. âSame here.â He grew serious. âWeâll find him, alright? Heâs not gonna get away with this, any of it.â
And there was more that Bulkhead wanted to say, a lot moreâbut he didnât.
He just watched as Wheeljack yawned and stretched, then the Wrecker was goneâoff to some well-earned stasis.
Only Optimus was left.
â⌠Youâre right, Prime,â Bulkhead said after a moment. âI didnât tell him.â He looked at his leader, feeling nothing but guilt. âI mean, I-⌠I wasnât really thinking about itâlike, trying to keep it from him. But once I did start thinking about it, I just-⌠I know he has to go home, but I didnât wanna be the one who sent him there.â
The Prime blinked, then he frowned. âWhat do you mean, Bulkhead?â
âI donât wanna be the reason why he leaves,â Bulkhead explained awkwardly. âAnd⌠I donât wanna be the reason why he might get hurt again, once he does.â He looked away. âHeâs doing a lot better, now.â
Optimus blinked again, then he sighed. âAnd you wonder if, once he goes home, that might all go away.â He shook his head. âBulkhead, you wonât be the reason why he leaves. Youâll just be the one who opens the door, and⌠itâll be his choice of whether or not he walks through.â He grew a bit more stern. âBut we promised weâd get that door open. He gets that choice, we donât make it for him.â
âI know.â Bulkhead nodded. âBut⌠I dunno. I guess I just donât want things to change.â He crossed his arms. âThings are still crazy, but it feels like theyâre just starting to be okayânot just for us, for him too.â He looked at Optimus, frowning. âWe didnât just say weâd get him home. We told him that weâre his team, that weâll be there for him.â
âAnd we will be,â Optimus insisted. âBut that can mean something different than you think. I thought we should keep him in the lab to give him more time, and I got scared when he got really upsetâbut he was just tired and worried about you, and he took care of Lugnut and Dirtboss with no problem.â He raised his shoulders. âYou were right. He was okay, and he needs to blow off some steamâand we took a big step last night, talked about how heâs going to be fighting from now on and not⌠coddling us, with what he does on the battlefield. Heâs just going to do what he has to.â
Bulkhead grew surprised. âReally?â
The Prime nodded. âYes. And thatâs just what happened, what he did and had to say. It was different than I thought.â He let his shoulders drop. âSo⌠you might think that you building that bridge would take him away and send him to a place that hurt him, and you could be right. If you are, weâll be there for him.â He took a deep vent. âBut you might just be giving him a way to really face all of it, every hurtâand decide where to go, from there. And if thatâs the case⌠weâll be there for him then, too.â
â⌠What if I build the bridge, and heâs just gone?â Bulkhead asked quietly.
Optimus gave a small smile. âYou really think that Wheeljack would settle for a one-way trip? Heâs family, Bulkhead.â He glanced towards the hallway. âHe has to go back, but⌠I think itâll be a point of personal pride for him, making sure that he can move back and forth.â He returned his gaze to his teammate. â⌠Heâs spent his whole life saying âgoodbyeââbecause heâs lost someone, or because he had to escape. I donât think heâll say âgoodbyeâ to us by choice, and⌠heâs stubborn. He wonât give the multiverse the option of denying him that choice.â
Despite himself, Bulkhead huffed out a quiet laugh. âYeah, that sounds like him.â His face fell a bit. â⌠You donât wanna lose him, either.â
â⌠No,â Optimus agreed softly. âI donât.â He put on a smile. âAgain, I guess we went about things differently. You didnât wanna help him go⌠and I think that, somehow, Iâve just made up my mind that heâll never really be gone.â He straightened his posture. â⌠One of those ways can work, for nowâwhatever bumps in the road we might run into, with the science. The other way doesnât help anyone, Bulkheadânot Wheeljack, and not you.â
Bulkhead sighed. âYeah. And⌠you were right, Prime. I really gotta build and fix some bridges, with Wheeljack.â He looked up at his leader. â⌠Heâll never really be gone?â
âNot a chance,â Optimus pressed. âNone of us will let that happen. Weâre in this togetherâall of it, no matter what.â
The Prime sounded so sure.
Maybe it would be enough for Bulkhead to really start believing it.

Bulkhead woke up early the next morning.
Unable to return to stasis, he wandered out into the main area of the Plantâand the large, green mech blinked in surprise as he saw someone.
Wheeljack was sitting on the cement couch, a canister of blue Energon resting on the table.
He seemed to be tinkering with a compartment in his wrist, and Bulkhead wondered briefly if his secret grenade trigger had somehow been damaged. Heâd only seen it for the first time in the mine, and the Wreckerâd fallen into the river after using it the second time.
But it was the wrong wrist.
Bulkhead blinked, then he carefully walked closer. Wheeljack was so preoccupied, he didnât even seem to notice his teammate.
The green mech peeked over the Wreckerâs shoulder, and he saw that the armor there had split to reveal a small, flickering gray screen imbedded in the other mechâs forearm.
âCâmon,â Wheeljack muttered, using his tool to make an adjustmentâand he sighed in relief when it turned green and began to clear. âThere we are.â He gave a small smile. âHeh.â
âWhatâs that?â Bulkhead asked without really thinking about it, and his friend nearly jumped out of his armor before looking at him with wide optics. âOh! Sorry! My bad!â
âFrag, Bulk.â Wheeljack raised a servo to his chest. âGive us a warninâ, will ya?â He shook his head, then he blinked and glanced down at his wrist. âOh, uh- This? Itâs, uh⌠Itâs the visual aid for some of my internal systems. It lets me see where my Energon levels are, shows me the location of the other members of my unit or team are within a certain proximity, displays the locations and levels for whatever substance or energy Iâm scanning for in a short range, and lets me access a small personal database.â He raises his shoulders. âThese beauties werenât too common, during the warâmostly used by the medics as health monitorsâbut Iâm crafty, rigged one up myself.â He looked down at the screen. âIt got busted, towards the end of the war on Cybertronâand I never bothered to fix it. Pit, I even welded over it once or twice.â
âItâs in you.â Bulkheadâs brow furrowed. âWhy wouldnât you want it fixed?â
âNo need for it, by the time I had -well- the time,â Wheeljack replied, and Bulkhead blinked before his expression dropped. âThen, when I was on a team again, my Ratchet had it all covered. No need, again.â
Bulkhead frowned, and he walked around the couch and sat down next to the Wrecker. â⌠You didnât want to see who wouldnât be there.â
Wheeljack blinked, then he huffed quietly before offering a small grin. âNothinâ gets past you, nowânone of ya. Fragginâ nightmare.â
Bulkhead just looked at his friend, then he looked down at the screen.
Bulkhead tensed when he came to the name âOptimus Primeâ and saw the word where the spark-beat should have been.
Everyone already kinda knew, but that silent confirmation just seemed so final, and it chilled his Energon.
Wheeljackâs Optimus was really gone?
There were more names beneath that name, all with OFFLINE or NO SIGNAL beside them.
He bet there would be dozens, if Wheeljack decided to scroll down to view them all.
âThey update on their own, when it happens in a certain proximity or I connect to a database that confirms it,â Wheeljack said, sounding very numb. âSo, these are old. Some of âem havenât been updated since long before the war left a dead Cybertron. Others just havenât changed since I left my Cybertron.â
Bulkhead looked at Wheeljack, his optics wide, then he looked at the names again.
All of those NO SIGNAL names were âbots that Wheeljack cared aboutâhis team, his familyâand there was a good chance that they were missing Wheeljack, back in his reality.
Back in his home.
Wheeljackâs home always sounded so scary to Bulkhead, and he wasnât always so sure that the Wrecker was treated well. He was in no hurry to send his friend back there, to lose himâŚ
But if Bulkhead had come to care about Wheeljack so much after only a few stellar-cycles⌠and if Wheeljack had come to care about the team as much as he did in that same short time⌠the green mech decided that could not even imagine how much love was carried in those names, pain or no pain with it.
He kept the red names.
He kept themâout of othersâ sight, but still in his systems for his hidden accessâeven though he knew that they were gone.
Whatever they had felt about him, Wheeljack loved them all that much.
And Bulkhead didnât just feel guilty because he had let his worry get the better of him. He felt guilty because he knew he had been selfish.
What right did he or anyone else have to keep Wheeljack anywhere?
Prime was right, this was his choiceâand he wanted to get home.
He deserved to get home.
âWheeljack?â Bulkhead tried, only to lose his words when he saw that the Wrecker was snapped out of deep thought. âUmâŚâ
âHeh.â Wheeljack shook his head. âI, uh⌠I should patch you fellas into this thing, get some real use outta it now that itâs workinâ again. Otherwise, itâd just be pointless...â He looked at Bulkead, and he put on a grin just like heâd always do. âWhat is it, buddy?â
â⌠Iâm sorry,â Bulkhead told him, and that grin dropped. âIâm sorry I didnât tell you what I knew about space-bridges.â He gestured to the green screen. âIâm sorry youâre missing your family⌠and Iâm sorry youâre not home.â
âIâm not goinâ anywhere until I finish what I started here,â Wheeljack insisted. âBridge or no bridge, Iâm here now until the fightâs done.â
âYeah, but there should be a bridge!â Bulkhead argued, looking up at his friend in frustration. âI shouldâve started working on one with the professor the day you got here so that it would be ready, and I didnât! I didnât, Wheeljackâand now, Iâm not even started on one that can move around this universe! Figuring out how to get you back to your reality could take years, and youâre gonna be stuck here all that extra time because of me!â He looked down, that guilt crushing him. âI promise, Iâm gonna get you home⌠but itâs gonna be a while. Iâm sorry.â
âBulk?â Wheeljack sounded surprised, then he looked down at the screen. âHm.â It was quiet for a little while, then the Wrecker glanced at the green mech with a raised optic-brow. â⌠Can I be honest with you, for a minute?â
Bulkhead nodded, not raising his head. He couldnât bring himself to. âYeah. âCourse.â
âHome.â Wheeljack gestured. âLike, the idea of it⌠Thatâs pretty complicated, for me.â
âHuh?â Bulkhead blinked, then he looked up at his friend. âWhaddya mean?â
âWell, letâs look at it in terms of âplaceâ,â the Wrecker began awkwardly. âSee⌠I had a place once, with folks lookinâ after meâthen I was on my own for a while. Then, it was campuses.â He looked down, folding his servos. âI had a place I was barely ever in while I was workinâ at Kimia, then I was always on the move durinâ the war. I had a ship for a while, the Jackhammer, but⌠that blew up.â He shrugged. âI stayed at a base for a time, though -again- we were always on the move with bridges sendinâ us out on our missionsâand then I was suddenly back on Cybertron, and⌠I never fully settled in.â He gave a bitter laugh. âI have never had luck with optimism. I would get my hopes up, then have âem thrown in my face. So, to be frank, I was savinâ myself the effort and the pain and just⌠keepinâ myself ready for it all to go away again at any time.â He looked at Bulkhead, his strained smile dropping away into a forlorn expression. â⌠Even the team. My family.â
Bulkheadâs optics widened. âWait, what?â
âAll I ever do is lose, and⌠you know by now that my relationship with âem wasnât exactly the best it couldâve been,â Wheeljack said, being completely genuine, then he looked at his screen. âI miss them, I really doâevery day, them and the humans we had with us. I want to get back to my reality to see them again, to let âem know Iâm alright and that I didnât just leave âem hanginâ. I worry that, if I canât get to âem, something will go wrong while Iâm not there to help.â He took a deep vent. âBut honestly? Every day, it gets a little weirder to try and refer to my reality as âhomeâ⌠âcause Iâve come to learn that âhomeâ canât be a place, not for me.â
âI donât understand,â Bulkhead admitted.
Wheeljack sighed, still staring at that little screen. âI always lose. Nothinâ ever lasts, but⌠at times, I can convince myself that I can count on some things better than others. I can risk beinâ optimistic, for them.â
Bulkheadâs brow furrowed again, then he looked at the little screen covered in names.
âEvery day, it gets a little weirder to try and refer to my reality as âhomeâ.â
What was going on? What was he trying to say?
âHome canât be a place, not for me.â
Not a place? Then, what was it?
Then, it clicked.
Bulkhead blinked, because that list on the little green screen was suddenly more than just a group of âbots Wheeljack cared about: his team, his unit, his friends, his family.
It was the only home that the Wreckerâd ever let himself count onânot a place, people.
His home was made of people.
And⌠that made sense, to Bulkhead. The Plant wouldnât be home without the team.
Wheeljack wasnât missing his reality so much as the people in it. They were his home.
But there was more to it than that.
âMy relationship with âem wasnât exactly the best it couldâve been.â
A lot more.
âI should patch you fellas into this thing.â
Because no matter what a âhomeâ was for a person, a âhomeâ could be many thingsâat the same time or one after the otherâand change just like the person could.
Wheeljack was trying to figure out which it was.
So, maybe Bulkhead had been right again. Maybe it was a good thing that he got away for a little while, so he could think.
But all the same, a promise was a promiseâand he wouldnât be neglecting that promise again.
Wheeljack would have his time, but heâd also have options ready when he needed them.
â⌠Weâll be making the portal on purpose,â Bulkhead said at last, because he felt like he finally understood. âItâll be a door.â The Wrecker glanced at him. âDoors open both ways.â
âHeh.â Wheeljackâs smile returned, and it wasnât forced this time. âI suppose they do.â He looked back at his little screen, and Bulkhead watched that smile go away as the Wreckerâs optics gradually went vacant. â⌠They have to.â
â⌠It will,â Bulkhead pressed, and he was very careful as he rested a servo on the Wreckerâs back to stir him out of his thoughts. âCount on it.â Wheeljack looked up at him, and the green mech put on a smile. âOptimistic, right?â
Wheeljack blinked, then he grinned. âYeah.â The panel in his wrist slid shut. âOptimistic.â
The real weight of it all set in on Bulkhead. It was so much bigger than him.
Heâd been worried that someone who fell into his world from another would leave someday. Heâd never stopped to really consider the fact that Wheeljack no longer just of one world.
He was of two worlds. He had two families.
He was loyal. How could anyone expect him to choose between them, even if his relationship with one wasnât as smooth as the other?
He loved them both⌠but that just made it all harderâbecause if- no, when the space-bridge finally went active and Wheeljack found he could walk between two realities and families freely, what was he supposed to do?
Even if he never let either reality go, where was the Wrecker supposed to go?
