Hi guys. Time to finally get subjected to one of my Grayverse AUs. This is for License to Brawl... I originally planned to post the Starr Force / Worst Bunch one first, but I'm still smoothing out a lot of the kinks for that AU, so it will take longer than I originally anticipated
This is more going over each Gray's position in the AU, such as their current predicament, their occupation, a brief overview of their lore, etc. - to lay the frameworks for what to expect of each character. There isn't exactly a layout for the plot of this AU just yet, but I do hope to be working on that soon
Original and Reverse are famous actors still, with Original still focusing on comedy and Reverse still focusing on action. The big change for them is that silent film is normal in this time period, so them being silent film actors isn't niche like it is in their canon setting. However, the 1920s is when talkies start to come into play, so they're watching the evolution of a genre that displeases them - though is ultimately already growing in popularity, and they're finding that they want to stay behind with the silent genre.
Lover is still a waiter in a very fancy restaurant, and still dreams of being an actor. Similarly to Original and Reverse, he would want to act only in silent films, which is beginning to feel even more out-of-reach than before, due to the introduction of talkies. He acts in local plays and has a second, part-time, job in a flower store. He's still trying his best to find a romantic partner.
Runaway was a street-performing mime, but after being in the wrong place in the wrong time, is arrested on suspicion of partaking in, or supporting, gang activity. With talk of the death penalty, he knew he needed to escape; he fled to a speakeasy, where he was hidden by one of the bartenders and co-owners. Finding out too late that, quite ironically, they were gang associates - and Runaway was now deep in debt to them. Runaway works at the restaurant (day) and speakeasy (night), he also lives in there.
Swordsman was a police officer, but after being framed for a crime, he was tossed into prison. Due to the crime being a horrific murder, he was being given the death penalty - but after being caught up in the prison break of a gang member under the same sentence, Swordsman was picked up by that gang. He now lives and works with them.
Gigantophis' mother moves with him to the US when he's still pretty young, but it ends up meaning that he grows up in an area heavily controlled by a gang created by an ex-police officer. He's radicalised by their beliefs and proves himself to them by being undercover in the police for a decade, allowing him to cover up a lot of their crimes, and for them to get valuable classified information. When he is caught, he returns to the gang.
Void starts off the same as Giga, but instead of proving himself in that way, he is experimented on. This causes him a lot of health issues, but enhances his powers to be a lot more dangerous. He is a serious threat as their living weapon, and has a higher bounty than the others due to it.
Lieutenant also moves to the US at a young age, and grows up in the same area as the last two. Due to the gang, however, he goes and becomes a police officer - desperate to prove himself, he goes undercover in the gang for a decade. After being caught, he returns to the police.
NOTHING for Windstock, Gardener, or R3V3N4NT yet.
True Silver and True Gold are rival statue street performers, there isn't a lot interesting to them yet.
Bard is a folk musician, who sometimes dabbles in a couple other genres, though only ever as a variant of folk. He does a lot of street and stage performances, but all his songs are also on recording and he's living decently.
Tyrant is the CEO of a very large and very rich company (I have yet to decide what they actually make), and has lived in wealth his whole life. Absorbed in his special interest, however, he wishes for more; dreaming he was a Medieval king. This wish stays buried inside him, but he finally begins to use it to express himself, when he meets Jester.
Jester is a play actor, preferring to do comedy but really doing any kind of role that'll get him paid. After a play in which he plays the part of a Medieval jester, he receives a letter with a very strange request; How much would it cost for him to do that full-time?
Knight is one of the close bodyguards of Tyrant. Fascinated by Medieval knights, he likes to pretend that he is one when he is on shift - he was very embarrassed by this, until his boss hired Jester, and he found out he wasn't the only one who thought like that.
Butler began working as a servant under Tyrant to pay the bills while he attended college, but he's been stuck here since - while Tyrant treats him well (… as well as he treats anyone, anyway) and the pay is good, especially after being promoted to his butler, it wasn't where he wanted to be. He's found a sense of comfort in being the head of the servants, however - so he wouldn't truly say he hates being there, and could see himself still working there in the future.
Vampire is actually from this time period too hi. After being turned into a vampire, and later killing a woman, he wants to flee the country, but he fears that will be suspicious. Instead he moves into a nearby forest, isolating himself from other people - sometimes, he still feels like it's that night in the alleyway.
Monster Hunter struggled to find a solid job as he tried to find his footing after moving to the US, so found himself hunting animals, and later bounties, for cash. He didn't care what they wanted him to do the hunt for, as long as he got paid for it. After hearing reports about a vampire, he's begun putting all his best efforts together for this hunt.
Director and Typographer grew up with dreams of being in the film industry, just like most other Grays - but instead of being actors, they wanted to be backstage. They both succeed in their dreams, but the introduction of talkies threatens Typographer's position if it takes over - thankfully for him, the famous Director still wants to make silent films! … not so thankfully, he's not the kindest.
For the ones who BELONG in this setting;
Noir moved to the US to become a police officer after his mother convinced him to abandon his dream of being an actor, but due to his physical disability he was denied a position. He instead attended law school, and became a private investigator. While business was slow for a while, taking down a particularly notorious gang gained him a lot of visibility - and cases began to roll in. While on the case for, what he didn't know at the time was, another gang - he was caught, and his arm sawn off and replaced - at a price. While allowed to remain a detective, Noir has his own fair share of crimes under his belt.
Lawyer also moved to the US after his dream was crushed by his mother, but he knew that a position like a police officer wasn't one he'd be able to endure - so he took a different route. Also going to law school, but coming out a lawyer. Over the years, Lawyer forced his personality and appearance into a picture-perfect box - he tried to conform to the idea of being a perfect man. This put a lot of stress on him; to the point he began to fantasise about the things he saw in those crime scene sketches - which eventually led to the death of his mother. With his eventual acceptance of these thoughts, he created Blanc - his killer persona.
Gang Leader (AU Noir) doesn't have a start to his story sorted out rn cuz he's too similar to Noir for too long for my liking. However, in the same gang as Noir, he eventually retaliates - after gaining some popularity among the gang members, he kills the leader. While his plan was originally to abolish the gang altogether, he's learned how much the members rely on its existence for protection, money, and resources - so he takes over.. with which he begins to learn just how much his morals were tainted.
Journalist (AU Blanc) chooses to become a crime journalist instead of a lawyer, and when his violent thoughts begin, he starts to express himself through a healthy outlet - writing. Donning the pseudonym Blanc, he begins writing a lot of anonymously written and published crime fiction; and gradually learns to express himself, becoming more of a person and less of a shell.
Additional characters, that aren't Gray;
Mariposa Piper, Alleycat Bull, El Mayordomo, Lola, and Byron have the same roles in this plot as they do in my typical License to Brawl lore.
Goldhand Belle still exists here as well, but she is now the original leader of the Goldhand gang, before she is killed by Gang Leader.
Original Barley and Golden Barley work together to run a restaurant that turns into a speakeasy at night, with Original typically doing the restaurant shifts, while Golden does the speakeasy shifts. While Original is still kindhearted, Golden has a hardened exterior due to the circumstances they are consistently put in by the surrounding gangs. Golden Barley is the one that takes in Runaway.
In case the continuous mentions of gangs has gotten confusing, here is it laid out a little more simply;
GANG 1 ("The Goldhand Gang") - Gang Leader, Detective Noir.
GANG 2 (Currently unnamed) - Swordsman.
GANG 3 ("The Worst Bunch") - Gigantophis, Void.
Runaway, OG Barley, and Golden Barley are not in a gang, but they are gang associates. They will assist any nearby gangs in return for protection, especially due to certain gangs targeting robots.
