During the grocery store madness of early COVID, I was at first really confused about why people were upset about the pictures of people with big full shopping carts. That is because I grew up in a house with 6-12 people, 80% of whom were athletes.
Me and my siblings would eat 46 eggs over the course of one week. A gallon of milk roughly every two days. Whole bags of apples and oranges gone before the weekend. POUNDS of beef and chicken. Bags and bags of chips.
The only fruit that lasted to the weekend were strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. Often only mushy, soggy, berries, the weakest of the carton.
To ensure the berries would get eaten my dad would make “berry sweet”. Honey, brown sugar, and lime juice mixed in a big bowl with all the berries.
This was also during the height of my father’s food dehydration phase. We made beef jerky, dried banana chips. Anything that could be dried, we dried it.
Many things about food in my dad’s house were wrong and bad. I think it’s why I so fondly remember our tall shopping carts, we often needed two to fully stock our kitchen, and berry sweet.
And then it occurred to me that I could eat the whole lasagna, and no one could stop me.
