I think a lot about ironic it is that Dimevolcano is a fire-themed power up for a dino sentai because the animal itās based on, dimetrodon, is:
1) not a dinosaur, or even a reptile- itās more closely related to mammals like us humans than dinosaurs
2) went extinct before the dinosaurs even existed; and
3) was part of an aquatic ecosystem (though more likely was terrestrial rather than amphibious)
DimeVolcano
Dimetrodons arenāt dinosaurs. Itās the positioning of the legs. A dinosaurās legs rest under its body like a horse or a cat, and a Dimetrodonās legs sprawl out from under it like a crocodile or a turtle going through a punk-rock phase. Though at this point I donāt know where the Dimetrodon falls in regards to being more reptilian (scaled) or saurian (feathered). On a note related to other dinosaur Super Sentai, pteranodons arenāt dinosaurs either. Neither is anything that swims. There has never been a single season of Super Sentai themed around dinosaurs in which every Ranger or Zord was actually a dinosaur. Food for thought.
The Good: I like how big this guy is. Heās a bit larger than both TigerLance and MilNeedle, making him feel like a decent power-up Zord. He also has one of the better looking canon forms, even with the stomach drill and shoulder...things.
The headās also cool. While all the head designs are fairly similar, this one tries to look like an evolution of the standard Kishiryu-Oh head. But on fire. We donāt get a lot of flaming heads in Super Sentai, so I appreciate it.
The Bad: This set comes with less pieces than the last two releases, with only six. And theyāre all bigger than usual, which can lead to some issue when trying to find places for them in combinations. It feels like the gimmick suffered a bit for the upcoming SpinoThunder and Gigant Kishiryu-Oh combinations.
The handle on the saw weapon is constructed of the same rubbery plastic as many of the pieces on this kit, and I feel like it might suffer from the same issue that LupinRexās sword did where it sags over time if you keep it displayed holding it. Something to watch out for.
The Ugly: Itās summer, and this set has a lot of rubbery plastic. When I pulled it out of the box, not only had every piece separated in-transit, but the tail piece was significantly bent and the Gigant head piece was to a lesser extent. I immediately threw them in the freezer to stop them from wobbling (which do NOT try and move them on their joint axis right after doing this because they felt like they were going to shatter like glass) and was going to blow-dry them but my hair dryer is temporarily gone for reasons.
If youāre able to fight off the collector mentality of āI have to own this right away,ā then Iād recommend holding off on buying this until September or October when it starts to cool down. A weird suggestion I know, but if you donāt like repairing your toys out of the box it is an option to consider.
Overall, itās a typical Sentai toy that I wish was released in a cooler month. It will be a while until we can see its full potential when MosaRex comes out, but it can stand on its own as a cool, little power-up lizard.
My Ryuusoulger collection so far (still need the Ryusoulken)
and a custom formation with Dime since i just got him
