From the moment I walked into the J Dilla Weekend Birthday BBQ, I just knew this was going to be something special. This was probably the most chill concert experience I have ever had. It actually felt like a backyard bbq and LMNT was the perfect venue. The energy was incredible! A great group of performers, DJs, and fans all came together to celebrate the life and legacy of the late great J Dilla. 

One of the highlights was seeing Camp Lo. They performed some new songs and of course the classics. Watching the whole crowd sing along to “Luchini” was pretty amazing. In that moment it felt like we were all transported back to the 90s. Then Mobb Deep came through and killed it! What can you say about Mobb Deep that hasn't already been said? The whole crowd went crazy as soon as they started “Shook Ones”. They did mention that new music was on the way, so we can look out for that! And then Joey Badass and Statik Selektah. Where to begin? This was the most energetic, raw performance I’ve seen from Joey. He left it all on the stage, from the execution and delivery of every single word. Not to mention the crazy mosh pit he started before his set was over!  It was also great to hear him perform some of the songs off the new album. 

Closing out the show was Kaytranada with an eclectic DJ set. One of the best things about seeing a DJ mixing music live is when they are 100% immersed in the music that they are playing. You can just feel the passion and the energy that goes into every mix and the selection of each track. Kaytranada definitely lived up to this because his energy was through the roof!

This was only one of the many events that took place during Dilla Weekend. There were also events at other venues with artists like Talib Kweli, Madlib, and Slum Village to name a few. If you’re a fan of hip hop music, this was the place to be. It was hard to believe that this was the first year that the J Dilla tribute was extended from one day to a weekend of events. I hope that this is the first of many more J Dilla Weekends to come!
