Dig Your Own Tune 10/19/2017: “Ember in the Ash” by @blankrange

Happy Friday eve, friends. What looks to be the last weekend in the 70′s here in The Core, I will be spending my days outside, frolicking in foliage and getting semi-lit on alcohol. 

Today’s tuneage is a band from Nashville that just released their debut album Marooned with the Treasure back in August. As society has evolved, Nashville’s twang has, too, and these guys are pickin’ up what Tennessee is puttin’ down. 

"Ember in the Ash” is this slow burnt end of lap steel and wonderful, sleepy lyrics. It’s one of those songs, for me, that is absolutely perfectly produced. You do one thing different and it may not have the power this does. And then I found out that it’s none other than Brad Cook that has done this producing. Who, if you don’t know who that is, you should probably read this article. 

Actually, I’m sure it’s a lovely song without Brad’s magical touch.

Dig Your Own Tune 10/12/2017: “I See What You Mean” by Acid Smoker

Happy Friday eve, friends. It’s been a hot minute, and I can’t stand idly by and listen to Cardi B any longer. No offense, she’s talented, but she’s from New Jersey.. ew. 

The definition for sentimental can be feelings derived from “tenderness, sadness or nostalgia”. At first glance, this doesn’t really make any sense. To me, nostalgia is something where I reminisce on joyful moments, and although sentimental, would not associate with sadness. But, as I began to dig deeper and I look back at this Summer, it couldn’t ring truer. Nostalgic for all the great times, trips and abundance of friends, but sadness for the time spent away from things that are just as important. 

So, for whoever at Webster came up with that definition. Great job. 

I don’t get sappy on here often, but today’s jam struck a (guitar) chord and wanted to give these two Olympian dudes props for getting the Dennis Reynolds out of me. 

I literally know nothing else about this band, except that their names are Stephen and Brian, they released an album back in May and they’re very good at knitting.

Dig Your Own Tune 05/11/2017: “Heartworms” by The Shins

Happy Friday eve, friends. If there’s something we can all agree on nowadays, it’s that LaVar Ball is an idiot, right? If you disagree, please come prepared with strong, and I mean strong arguments for why you think differently. Chances are you’re an idiot, too, and I wish you all the best in the non-cool things you do with your life. 

The Shins, who are more or less the brain child of James Mercer, started in New Mexico way before the state was *cool* with all the meth and stuff. So, here we are, 60 years later, and The Shins and meth are still super relevant. 

Although, I think Port Of Morrow (2012) is a better overall record, their most recent (also titled Heartworms) is a valiant effort to further solidify themselves as rock legends. 

Today’s toon starts out like a Beatles love song that transpires in to melody hooks galore. And hell, maybe there was a little bit of meth dabbling for their cover art and space-y vocals. 

Meth kicks ass.

Dig Your Own Tune 04/20/2017: “Falling for You” by Horse Thief

Happy Friday eve, friends. It’s 4/20 and literally everyone is stoned. Everyone is nicer, funnier and cooler. No wonder the government banned it. What a stupid drug. 

But seriously, if you are high, listen to this song. You might want to be sitting down first, and have a couple chocolate cupcakes handy. 

Horse Thief are from Oklahoma City, which is the most creative name for any state capital in the United States. Their music twinges on this alternative country genre which I really like. I just really wish it wasn’t called ‘alternative country’. 

It’s a slow burning number that reminds me of early Alberta Cross. The piano and guitar fills are something the average listener may not notice. 

So, like I was saying, please get stoned and listen to this song.

Happy Friday eve, friends. Big game for the Noles this weekend, and another team and city I can’t stand. If you’ve ever thought, “hey, going to Clemson, SC sounds like fun..” please re-think every thing you’ve ever thought about in your entire life. Unless you like collecting stamps or counting blades of grass, there’s literally nothing else to do. Stupid town, stupid football team. 

I was born and raised on Country music, and have always felt a calm listening to it and loved learning how it evolved through the 60′s and 70′s. Now, I just feel the sudden urge to kick every country singer in the nads and tell them to quit ruining this for everyone. 

Aaron Lee Tasjan is not one of those people. And whether you want to classify this as “country” or not, he’s one of the few that can at least take elements and put our societal twist on it. 

This song jams with a haunting desert guitar riff, but ALT’s vocals really take hold and cause you to want to chant the even more haunting, desert-like chorus. 

Desert so nice I had to say it twice!

Dig Your Own Tune 08/25/2016: “Reason to Run” by EZTV

Happy Friday eve, friends. I had the conversation the other day about how Alexander Hamilton, who we all know now, did nothing but influence a dope broadway musical, was shot by our Vice President, Aaron Burr, in 1804 during a duel. Now, the political duress we’re experiencing today isn’t going to lead to an actual duel, but do you think future people will look back at this election like we look back at that? It’d go something like this, “Can you believe that actually happened?”

Today’s tuneage is from a New York based band, which we all know now, is just the place where they have that dope Hamilton show. EZTV brings some pretty chill vybes and are releasing a new album in September. 

Being from NY already gives you a certain aurora of cool, but getting Martin Courtney from Real Estate to shred licks on your tunes is like Gowanus/Red Hook cool. 

The songs rocks like an Eagles classic, but that muddled riff shows they’re fully capable of kicking your ass if they get compared to the Eagles too many times. 

Kick.. your fucking ass.

Happy Friday eve, friends. I’m a firm believer of not trusting everything you read or see these days. I’m even more of a believer of getting to know someone before you make harsh, rash judgements. Which, you know what.. No, I won’t get into that. But my point is, after watching The Big Short and hearing of the Gawker news today, if I shake your hand and you say you’re a billionaire, I’m gonna have some questions. 

Star Parks is a pretty rad new band out of Austin, TX who just released their debut album this past May. Austin is also home of Stubb’s BBQ and SXSW; FYI. 

What starts out as a earthy piano ballad, you’re taken through a falsetto twanged harmony that builds into this grand orchestral song. 

Then when you add the theoretical nonsense, and well, I’m lost, too... 

It’s just a really good song.

Happy Friday eve, friends. July 4th is my favorite holiday, and any sort of naysayer that wants to disgrace the great name of the United States and bring up some garbage argument of how it isn’t right that we celebrate it can lick shit and get chicken pox for the second time.

The name Drug Cabin is prone to be enjoyed by stoners. Then they’ll hear the music and their heads will explode.  

You start by getting this Real Estate vibe, which then layers to some crunchy lap steel tuneage and wraps up with a catchy pop vocal sequence.
