Digitization is omnipresent as a slogan and stands for a Great Transformation in society - culturally, technically and economically. If we look at digitization only as a kind of a software update, we ignore this change. Platforms and networks are becoming increasingly important. I'm talking about the Great Transformation to a Web Society. I see uncertainties, but also great enthusiasm for this topic.
We are facing the transition to a platform economy. It's no longer all about selling products, but offering ecosystems for smart services that actually fits best to improve the users lives and works. Thinking in platforms and networks and developing business models to fulfill the needs of customers are the first challenges for companies, from local based start-ups to global companies.Ā

Comparing libraries to Microsoft sounds silly, but when you continue reading, it kinda makes sense? Ā They arenāt exactly hard up but they are struggling to keep up with Apple (although, I think much of Appleās rise to fame can be attributed to hipstersā¦yes, I own an Ipad. Ā I donāt use the internet on my phoneā¦Iām going off topic). Ā Anywho, this got me to thinking about how can you digitize something that needs to be seen in person? Ā I donāt want a digital version of the Taj Mahal? Ā or the catacombs of Paris? Ā or the Hope diamond? Ā I want to see it, not a digital version of it. Ā Although, I get the authorās pointā¦libraries have to get on equal footing as the Internet or die trying (no seriously, donāt die)
