Another Digital Assistant on the road again
The First Job.
I spent a lot of time trying to get photographers attention by using three steps. Firstly, I did my research by rummaging through magazines & photo books and the Internet. Step two is acting on that, so I would then try contact them by e-mail, call or even my Postcard method (See First Post). The third thing to do is that you'll want to follow that initial contact with some casual chitchat and an offer to meet up sometime to see if you both get along. You would mostly do this by e-mail or phone call. It's far easier that way than asking for work outright.
My first ever job as assistant was around this time last year. I don't think its my first ever time working with another photographer, however as an assistant on a big photo shoot, it certainly was.

The shoot was at IRIS Studios, and I have a lot to say about those studios, but that’s for another day. I won't say too much about the specifics of the shoot, as I don't want to tread on any toes, however I will give you the basics. I was put in the deep end straight away with lights and cables. Fortunately there was an incredibly experienced 1st assistant with me. A 1st assistant is the photographer’s first point of call for lighting. Then you have a 2nd, 3rd & so on. You also have a Digital Operator that is there to setup all the digital kit, which is usually looking after the Mac or PC with workflow software. (I will go over these at later dates).
I learnt more in twenty minutes using equipment on this shoot than I ever did in 3 years of university. The day went on and I was incredibly tired of putting everything into it. It ended on a high, overtime but everyone was in a great mood. I truly recommend staying positive and have good manners, as it goes far.
