Lucifer is usually a bit later to flower and somehow seems autumnal in my mind. It is tall and structural, holding its scarlet flowers high above the stems. We have never found the right spot for it; partly because of its vivid colour but mostly because it is so tall and always arches onto paths before inevitably getting beaten down by high winds or heavy rain (although the latter would be welcome during this heatwave and the many hours spent watering containers and in the greenhouse).
Dierama is also called “angels’ fishing rods” because its pendulous flowers, held on several stems, are suspended below a long, graceful main stem. It is slow to flower and this one is flowering for the first time after being sown several years ago. I think it appreciated the wet early summer as it prefers moist conditions, but full sun.
