"I tell you distinctly that I am going to punish you for all your impertinences by being as tedious, as discursive, as incoherent, and as unsatisfactory as possible."
Truly, I couldn't have found better words for this collection myself. I've reached all the stories that I've read before, and I'm having serious doubts about the rest. There are far more forgettable stories in here than good ones, and I'm not quite halfway through. It's not looking good for the rest of the year. I don't really have anything new to add about these. They follow similar ridiculous patterns as some of the previous stories. It's possible they were funny back in Poe's day, but the humor doesn't translate well for a modern audience.
Half the time, he writes from the perspective of an ignorant narrator who thinks he's very clever, and it makes Poe as a writer come off as a pretentious ass ("The Literary Life of Thingum Bob, Esq."). "Loss of Breath" returns to the slapstick humor of the Blackwood stories, and a couple in this section ("Diddling", whose title didn't age well at all, and "The Business Man") are basically about ways to swindle people. "Maelzel's Chess-Player" is at least mildly interesting, where the narrator describes how a chess-playing automaton must have a person concealed inside it. Not exactly riveting, but compared to the rest, not as tedious or cheesy.
Diddling—or the abstract idea conveyed by the verb to diddle—is sufficiently well understood. Yet the fact, the deed, the thing diddling, is somewhat difficult to define. We may get, however, at a tolerably distinct conception of the matter in hand, by defining—not the thing, diddling, in itself—but man, as an animal that diddles.

'Taken from the 1965 Diddling EP is a bizarre adaptation of the similarly-named ballad and children's tale.'
