Song-meme fic #1: "Guy Love: Dick and Roy?" ~iamlingy~
This took FAAAAAAR longer than I expected to write...I blame Roy...because it totally wasn't the fact that I was attempting to write the entire thing using only dictation software...
Also, I wrote this from the YJ perspective because A) it's my crack and 2) I don't really know Roy very well in any other way.

When the number of dark and evil things that want you dead are in such a high level as those Roy Harper experiences on a daily basis, recognizing when you are not alone in your own home is more an instinct than proper training. However, noticing that there is someone else in your home is a far cry from knowing who that someone might be. This, happily, was not one of those instances. Making his way through the dingy living room of his one bedroom apartment, Roy briefly parted the single beam of light passing through the crack in his curtains where it was cast by the street lamp outside. It was rare for this still new superhero to receive guests and this particular guest had a tendency of arriving on less than happy pretences, however this could not prevent the small smirk which made its way onto Roy's face as he cracked the bedroom door. Lying atop the bed, amidst the rumpled sheets and scattered pillows, lay a curled form that was all-too-familiar to the archer. The Springs gave a moan of protest as the older boy sat down and he placed his hand close to the other boy who was still curled into his side on the bed such as to not surprise him though Roy was certain he had known the redhead was there from the moment the front door had opened, if not even sooner. "Hey," he said in his normal, gruff tone, "Bats being an ass again?" The question was met by a garbled noise that tended to suffice for an answer under such circumstances as this. It was not entirely unheard of for the Batboy to arrive on Roy's doorstep unannounced in such a manner, although his doorstep was less common than his bed, but even with so much of there now very rare alone time spent in such awkward silence Roy could not say that he didn't enjoy their time together. Placing his hand gently on the smaller boys shoulder, Roy. Let out a single canned laugh and stated, " Well if you were going to act like that, I suppose I will just have to go make myself a sandwich." The reaction he was quite clearly expecting was almost instantaneous. The hand on his shoulder was suddenly gripped tightly by a much smaller, gauntleted hand with which he was growing increasingly more familiar and he allowed himself to relax further into the bed such as to increase the comfort of both of them. Roy traced his thumb gently over the back of the hand that held his so tightly, knowing full well that Robin likely could not feel his gentle touch through the thick material of his gloves but by now the action was almost an unconscious habit. With a gentle tug, the younger boy's hand slowly began to pull Roy towards the bed until such a point as the older boy was lying flush against the younger's back . The rehead's arm gently wrapped itself around the younger boy's waist, pulling him closer and allowing the heat from his body to slowly seep into the darker boy where he was still cold from the long journey over. The slow, steady heartbeat beneath his hands a gentle reminder of exactly who he held in his arms. With a length of time that Roy was uncertain of, the smaller boy slowly shifted , turning himself so that they were face-to-face; or rather face to chest, where Robin gently pressed the fabric of his mask into the soft cotton of Roy's T-shirt. More to himself then to anyone else, Roy gently sighed; the younger boys breathing never changing. Pressing his nose down into the soft black hair of his young friend, the older boy spoke in the only way he knew. "You know, if anyone ever sees us like this, I'm simply going to claim that you are the woman in the relationship." He was rewarded by a less than forceful blow to the chest from where one small balled up fist lay clenching the material of his shirt. Chuckling slightly to himself Roy squeezed the smaller boy just that much harder and held on for exactly as much as he was needed. He was still uncertain exactly what their acting like this might mean in the longer run, however at this particular moment he was not one to care. They were there when they needed each other and that was all that matters.
roy/dick, tim/jason, cassie/rose, lois/diana :]
Roy/Dick: This is probably my number one Dick ship. And I have a lot of Dick ships. I think their mutual crushing began way back in the first Titans but they didn't really do anything about it? Dick was a lot more oblivious back then, and also a bit repressed, and Roy was insecure. Neither of them knew quite what they were feeling, or that the other was feeling it.
But they grew closer, and as Dick grew he became more aware of his own and other peoples' emotions, and he was there for Roy through the darkest time in his life. And Roy thought it would make Dick think less of him when really it did the opposite.
And Dick was there with him when he went to find Lian. (Just as Jason was there with him when he found out Lian existed. Roy and Robins, really.) That really - their bond was strong before, as friends and comrades with so much unresolved attraction, but having Dick beside him as he became a father, and Dick seeing Roy become that - it really strengthened and transformed their relationship.
I'm not sure when, precisely, it was finally consummated. Somewhere in between Dick's relationships and Roy's flings. They keep coming together and drifting apart. They both have their own issues that get in the way. But they never stop loving each other.
Tim/Jason: I see this a lot more easily on Tim's side. Dick was the one he imprinted on, I think, when it came to attraction. But by the time he saw Jason as Robin, he was growing up, and it wasn't tied up in awe and obsession and trauma. Well, there was obsession, but not at the same level. Tim became enthralled with the way he fought, and the way he flew, and the way he smiled.
So in a way, Jason was his first crush.
And Jason was the first person he lost.
When he was Robin, Jason became - something to guide him, something to aspire to. It pained him terribly to look at that case, but he couldn't tear his eyes away.
And then Jason came back, and Jason hated the sight of him. Not only was he replaced without a second thought - he was replaced by some rich brat. Obviously they'd think someone like that was better than him. Obviously this kid had looked down on him from the start.
And Tim was too devastated by this to try to sympathise, to understand. But he was still drawn to Jason, because those feelings didn't just disappear.
Part of him still desperately wanted to see that smile again.
I think, if Jason knew why Tim wanted to be Robin, and how hard it was to convince Bruce, and how much he looked up to him, it might change his perceptions, and - well, it might be a start. I also think Jason would enjoy the sheer challenge of Tim - of figuring out what makes him tick and how to make him react. And in some ways, Tim is dangerous, and Jason would enjoy that too.
I also think that if Tim looked past his own angst, he could understand where Jason's coming from.
They're two very different people, but that could be a benefit as much as a hindrance. They could balance each other, offer different perspectives.
Cassie/Rose: I honestly haven't read much of Teen Titans - just scans and the odd issue here and there. So I can't say much for the actual, chronological development of their relationship.
But good lord. Rose aching for Cassie's acceptance, vying for her attention, constantly pressing for a reaction, talking about her to everybody. What else am I supposed to take away from this?
And Cassie is attracted despite herself, because Rose's sheer passion is just - it's something she's always been drawn to, and something she misses in herself. And she feels for Rose, she really does.
I don't think their relationship would be, well, smooth, but I think it could be good for them. Rose - really needs someone to love and support her, and Cassie needs someone who just. Doesn't expect her to be perfect, encourages her to let loose sometimes. I think - this is really sentimental but I think they could help make each other whole again.
Lois/Diana: YES. Let's be real here my automatic reaction to women being pitted against each other either in the text or in fandom is SHIP IT. But like - the first time Lois meets Diana, in the arc where representatives from Man's World are invited to Themyscira - she's basically enthralled by her. And Diana is clearly impressed by her.
And Diana has a lot of the same qualities Lois is attracted to in Clark: courage, sincerity, conviction, selflessness compassion. Meanwhile, Diana really admires Lois for breaking barriers and forging her own path. She would very much appreciate her dedication to the truth.
So just, basically, yes.

I love their friendship so much. They're two orphaned sidekicks raised by two very dysfunctional men, who've coped with their situations very differently. Roy has a bit of a complex about that, about how well Dick dealt compared to him. Meanwhile, Dick admires Roy so much for going through so much and coming out the other side.
So they're very similar and very different at the same time, and they look up to each other, and they just love each other so much. Even when they clash, even when they don't understand each other, even when Dick closes himself off, even when Roy shouts something he'll regret.
I know a lot of people ship them in Outsiders but I just...can't with that book, I can only read bits and pieces because I hate how Dick is written in it. I do like that Roy is so devoted and determined, that makes sense, but Dick - just - no.

1. When or if I started shipping them:
It started with fic, actually! I didn't know Roy very well beyond that one Arsenal mini, so that was really my introduction to him with Dick. And it intrigued me! And the first thing I read was them finding Lian together, and well. That sealed it pretty well. And everything I've read since just keeps helping.
2. What I think their challenge is:
Writing that distances Dick from the Titans. Writing that makes him live up to his name really epically.
And, well. Boys have issues. I actually see Dick as more well-adjusted than much of fandom, I think? And also comics probably? But there are problems there and sometimes they make him act badly and Roy can be an enabler because of his horrible self esteem.
3. What makes me happy about them:
I am really a sucker for comrades in love, and friends-family-lovers, and people changing each other for the better, and people who have gone through hell together, and really any Titanship is going to fulfil that.
With Dick and Roy...they've overcome so much, and they admire each other so much, and they're just fun together. But not uncomplicated.
Also, Lian.
4. What makes me sad about them:
Canon.
5. What moment I wish had never happened:
"Don't get up." I just cannot even with the Renegade arc.
6. Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other
Oh I have so many ships for Dick I will not even try, and a lot of them could be endgame. Roy I ship with Jason. (More fic!) And Barbara. (RP!)

They work out all the shit canon has put their friendship through and rebuild that complete trust and then Lian has two daddies.
