Richie groaned as the morning light peeking through the blinds hit his face, threatening to completely blind him if he dared to open his eyes. He covered his face with his hand, turning away from the light only to come into contact with Eddieâs back. He cursed as he changed tactics, opting to feel around for his glasses so he could actually see what he was doing.Â
Once he could finally see again, he looked over at Eddie, smiling at how peaceful he looked as he continued to sleep. It had been a couple months since Eddie had moved in with him and Richie couldnât be happier. He loved waking up next to Eddie every morning, cuddled up against him. Itâs what heâd always dreamt about growing up: a happy and domestic life with Eddie.
After everything theyâd been through, everything the fucking clown had put them through, they were finally together. Eddie had divorced his wife and Richie had finally admitted his feelings for his best friend. It was scary and nerve wracking, but it had all been worth it.
Richie snaked his arm around Eddie, careful not to wake him as he held him as close to him as he possibly could. âThirty more minutes.â He thought to himself as he began to drift off to sleep again. âThirty more minutes and then Iâll wake him up.â
âRich?â Eddie said softly as he placed a hand over the arm wrapped around him and began to gently shake at it. âAre you awake?â
Richie groaned, moving to bury his face against Eddieâs neck, as a muffled âten more minutesâ escaped his lips.
âNo way!â Eddie protested as he turned to face Richie, tangling their legs together as he ran a hand through his boyfriendâs messy curls. âKnowing you, you already woke up and fell back asleep again. Itâs time to get up babe!â
âItâs Sunday, Eds.â Richie whined, refusing to open his eyes. âItâs supposed to be a day of rest!â
âRest does not mean sleep all day!â Eddie shot back as he began to kiss Richieâs face. âCome on, wake up. Iâll make you some pancakes while you watch those shitty cartoons you love so much.â
Richie didnât budge, allowing Eddie to continue to kiss and bribe him with breakfast. He was about to agree, finally give in and get up when Eddie suddenly stopped kissing him. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion before finally opening his eyes again to peer over at Eddie.
âI could spend hours just looking at you.â Eddie said before Richie could ask what was wrong. âI could lay in this bed all day and not give a fuck about anything and anyone around me.â
âEdsâŠâ Richie began but was cut off by Eddie.
âEvery moment that Iâm able to just look at you and think about how lucky I am that I can finally be with you is justâŠâ Eddie paused, voice cracking a little before he continued, âGod I canât quite put it into words.â
Richie let out a shaky breath as tears threatened to spill from his eyes. He knew Eddie loved him, of course he did, but he had never heard him say anything like this before. There was so much emotion- so much love- behind those words that it left him a little speechless.
He wanted to crack a joke, banish all the sappy emotions beginning to build up within him before realizing that he didnât have to do that anymore. Richie loved Eddie and Eddie loved him back. They were living together, they were together. There was no reason to hide his feelings anymore, no fear of rejection. He could tell Eddie that he loved him without fear of being laughed at or rejected or anything bad he had ever imagined growing up.
âI love you Eddie.â Richie said as he kissed Eddieâs forehead. âI could spend hours telling you just how much.â

Richie was late. Like, really fucking late. He scrambled out of his car, quickly making his way to the other side, opening the door with more force than necessary. He bent down, gently taking the packaged cake in his hands, closing the door of his car with his foot. Richie power walked to his apartment, not even bothering to lock his car. Who would even break into that piece of crap anyway? Itâs not like he had anything valuable in there to steal. Even if he did, this was way more important than anything that could be stolen from him.Â
It was Eddieâs birthday today, and the Losers had decided to throw him a surprise party. Despite Eddieâs pleas to them- âIâll be coming home late that day, itâs not worth it guys! Iâm gonna be tired as fuck!â-they decided to carry on with the party any way. After years of being denied birthdays by his overbearing mother as a child, Richie and the others wanted to do something nice for Eddie.Â
Richie gasped as he stopped himself from tripping over his shoelaces, heart racing at almost dropping the one thing he was allowed to be in charge of. Whatâs a birthday party without cake? This baby would definitely get to the apartment in one piece. He struggled with the door once he got to the front door, using his leg to balance the cake as he turned the door knob and let himself in.Â
He squinted through the darkness, finding it odd that no one was there yet. He was the one that was late after all. Before he could yell out and ask if anyone was there, the lights suddenly turned on and he was surrounded by various voices yelling âSURPRISEâ at him. He gasped, dropping the cake in his shocked state and everything went quiet.Â
He looked around at all the faces of his friends around him, wide-eyed and beginning to sweat. Not only was he late, but now he had dropped and ruined Eddieâs birthday cake before he even had a chance to blow out the candles and make a wish.
âWhat the hell Richie!â Groaned Bev as she rushed over to inspect the cake. He watched in silence as she opened the box and dropped her head with a sigh. âItâs no good, itâs ruined.â
She looked up again to glare at him and he glared right back at her. How was this his fault? They were the ones that surprised him! âExcuse me but in what world do I look even remotely like Eds? This is on you guys, Iâm just the cake messenger.â
âWeâd given up on you showing on time,â Stan chimed in. âEddie should have been home by now so of course we thought it was him and not you!â
Richie checked his watch, confirming the time. Stan was right, Eddie really should have been here by now. He was always on time to everything, even coming home from work. It was this predictability that Richie loved about him. It was a constant he found comfort in. âHuhâŠYouâre right, where is the birthday boy?â
Without waiting for an answer, Richie took out his phone, searching for Eddieâs name and pressing the call button. As the phone continued to ring, a growing panic began to build up within Richie. Eddie always answered his phone before the second ring. Something definitely had to be wrong. âHeâs not answering.â
âMaybe he just got held up at work,â Ben suggested despite not believing it himself. Taking out his own phone, he continued on to say, âIâll give them a call and ask if they know anything.â
Richie nodded and made his way to Eddieâs room on instinct as he dialed Eddieâs phone again. He paused, about to turn around and go to his room when he heard it. A faint buzzing noise coming from Eddieâs room. Richie furrowed his eyebrows confused as to why there would be any noise coming from his best friendâs room. Slowly, he opened the room, peeking into the darkness and shoving an arm into the room, feeling for the light switch on the wall.
He wasnât an idiot, you never go into a dark room to investigate an out of place noise without first turning on the fucking lights. When he heard a groan he pushed the door open the rest of the way and barged in, going straight to Eddieâs bed.
âEds? Eds, are you okay??â Richie asked, panic evident in his voice as he knelt down to look over Eddie. He was sweating, cheeks flushed red and hair sticking to his forehead. Had he stayed home alone this whole time? He probably hadnât eaten or taken anything this whole time. âYou dumbass, why didnât you call me??â
âS-shut upâ Eddie moaned out, squeezing his eyes shut and attempting to cover his face with his comforter. âG-get out! Turn the fucking lights off!â
âNo way dude,â Richie answered, refusing to budge from his spot next to the bed. âI canât believe youâve been here this whole time and none one out there noticed.â
Richie sighed as Eddie grunted in response before violently coughing. âOkay, Iâm gonna go get you some medicine and some fucking water too. You look dehydrated as fuck!â He moved to get up, but was stopped by a hand clutching onto his shirt. He paused, looking over to see Eddie looking at him with glassy eyes, a pleading look on his face.Â
âDonât-Donât leave me Rich,â Eddie begged, pulling at his shirt to bring him back, closer to him. âDonât leave me alone.â
Richie sighed, taking out his phone to text their group chat to bring some water and search for some medicine in their bathroom to give to Eddie. Once he was done, he leaned down to give him a quick kiss on the forehead as he ran a hand through Eddieâs sweaty hair. âIâm not going anywhere Eds. Iâll stay right here by your side.â
mmmm this is prob gonna flop bc itâs 1am and also unbetaâd but like yolo
=====
Patty groaned as she began to stir awake, blindly reaching for a pillow to put over her head. She could hear noise coming from the kitchen and, without even opening her eyes to check the time, knew it was too goddamn early to be awake. Before she could ask herself who could possibly be making so much noise, she remembered what had happened last night.Â
Stan had spent the night for the first time. They had gone on a date last night, one of many over the course of the semester since they had met at a frat party. It was a simple dinner and a movie situation that turned into an ice cream nightcap at her place. They had talked about the movie they had seen, laughing at how cheesy it had been and ranting about scenes that hadnât made any sense. It was one of the best dates sheâd ever had.
Patty smiled at that, realizing that sheâd said that about every date sheâd been on with Stan so far. Yet, it was true. Stanley Uris was not only kind and sweet, but someone Patty could imagine sharing a future with. He always made her laugh and every conversation they had fascinated her. He was opinionated, but also eager to hear her thoughts as well. He opened doors for her and always offered to pay for things, but also let her pay when she insisted on it. He never pressured her into anything and always asked her for permission before holding her hand or kissing her.
She giggled, burying her face into the soft sheets of her bed in an attempt to hide her blush. Thinking about Stan always turned her into a giggling, blushing mess. It was as if sheâd never had a crush before Stan. This was different though, way more than a simple crush. Patty was in love. The kind of love where all you think about is the next time youâll see the person youâre so gone on. The kind of love where you think about whether theyâve eaten or if theyâre happy. The kind of love where you imagine a future where one day, youâll wake up with them next to you every day, and not just when you accidentally spill ice cream all over their shirt.
Patty groaned at this, remembering how embarrassed sheâd been when she tripped and dumped her cone of ice cream all over Stan. He had laughed it off, assuring her it was no big deal, as he began to stand up and head towards her bathroom. She covered her eyes as he began to take his shirt off, gasping as she turned away from the door and chanting âIâm sorryâ over and over again.Â
Stan had laughed, telling her it was no big deal. After all, theyâd been dating for almost a whole semester now. Patty blushed, not wanting to admit that the only time sheâd ever seen a guy shirtless was when she went to the pool. That sheâd never seen a guy sheâd been dating shirtless because none of her relationships had gone past the making out stage.
She had admitted that to him last night, and heâd been apologetic for laughing at her. That only made Patty fall a little more in love with him. When she had offered to let him stay the night, they had both been surprised. She could see the blush begin to bloom across his cheeks and knew that her face was probably just as red as his was beginning to turn. Patty never made the first move. She always let Stan ask her if something was okay before eagerly agreeing.
Despite the offer coming off as suggestive, all they ended up doing was making out and falling asleep wrapped up in each otherâs arms. There would be time for more later. Besides, she wasnât prepared with theâŠproper items to go any further than some kissing and groping. She knew that was perfectly fine with Stan, could feel that they were on the same page regarding their future together.
As she began to get up, stretching her arms over her head as she yawned, she thought about how it might be a good idea to get some condoms for when they finally did more than literally sleep together. Now that heâd stayed the night, it would happen eventually, and honestly, she couldnât fucking wait. She walked towards the kitchen, ready to make a joke about how loud Stan was being when she choked out a laugh instead.
âIs that my shirt?â
Stan jumped, quickly setting down the mug he had been filling with coffee as he turned around to face her. He was blushing as he began to laugh nervously.Â
âY-yeah it is. Sorry, my shirt was still damp when I went to get it from the dryer and I didnât want your roommates to see me shirtless soâŠâ
He pulled at the shirt he had on, a black t-shirt with cats wearing sunglasses on it that she had gotten on a whim while out drunk with Richie. She eyed him, attempting not to laugh but couldnât help it, covering her mouth as she began to laugh at the sight in front of her.
âGod, I need to get my phone this is amazing!â
She began to rush back to her room, eager to get her phone and take a picture of Stan to send to Richie. Heâd definitely get a laugh out of it. She could hear Stan following behind her, and sped up.
âDonât you dare! Iâll never live this down if Richie sees me in this shirt.â
He caught up to her as she was about to get her phone, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her down onto the bed with him. They both laughed as they began to wrestle, attempting to get the upper hand on one another. Stan suddenly paused, leaning in to kiss her. Once their lips met, nothing else mattered to Patty. She kissed him back eagerly, phone forgotten on the bedside table.Â
âYouâre a little cheater. Using my love for you against me.â
How to Know If You're On a Date With Your Best Friend
Read on AO3
Summary:
He could see the way Richie looked at him with furrowed eyebrows, eyes slowly widening as he realized Eddie was coming over to sit next to him. Plopping down on the seat, he pushed Richie further into the booth, making himself comfortable. Without breaking eye contact, he placed his straw in Richieâs milkshake glass and asked, âAre we on a date right now?â
Eddie smiled, chin resting on his hand as he listened to Richie rave about the movie they had just finished watching. In all honesty, he hadnât even been paying much attention to it, so everything he was telling Eddie was more like a recap of what he had missed. All he had been able to focus on was the way their hands kept brushing against each other as they both reached into the popcorn tub at the same time.
It wasnât like this had been his first time watching a movie alone with Richie. It wasnât the first time their arms had been pressed against one another on the shared arm rest, neither one of them relenting to the other, too stubborn to let the other win. It wasnât even the first time Richie had put his arm around Eddieâfinally leaving him the arm rest, might he addâduring a movie.
It was, however, the first time the two had gone out together since Eddie had realized he had feelingsâą for his best friend. It was the first time he had felt nervous by the slightest accidental touch of hands, or any skin-to-skin contact really, and the first time he had actually wanted Richie to put his arms around him.
âEds, are you listening?â Richie questioned, as he waved a hand in front of Eddieâs face. âDonât tell me you just tuned me out this whole time!â
Eddie blinked, faint blush spreading across his cheeks as he slowly came back to reality. He had been so engrossed in thoughts about the boy in front of him that he hadnât realized heâd stopped paying attention to his ramblings. Quickly, he scrambled for an excuse and said, âSorry Rich! Iâm just so hungry I got a little distracted!â
He reached to pick up the menu in front of him, hiding behind it as he pretended to think about what he wanted. Eddie didnât actually have to look. Heâd been to this diner enough times with Richie and the other losers, to know what he wanted, what he ordered every time.
âYouâre kidding, right?â Richie said as he reached over to pull the menu back down onto the table. âYou always get the same thing Eds. Why bother pretending like youâre gonna order something different?â
âIâm not pretending Richie,â Eddie said as he pouted, crossing his arms defensively. âWhat makes you so sure that I didnât want to try anything new tonight?â
Richie stared at him, eyebrows raised suggestively as his mouth began to spread into a wide grin. âYou just handed me a perfect line and I could totally make a dirty joke out of it. But I wonât, because Iâm trying to be nice tonight.â
Eddie gasped, feigning shock. âRichard âThe Trashmouthâ Tozier? Being nice???â He pretended to think about it, before he giggled and said, âLess likely than you think!â
âHey, you jerk! Itâs more likely!â Richie laughed along with him. âKeep this up and Iâm not buying you a milkshake!â
Eddie stopped laughing at this, looking at Richie with a confused expression on his face. He couldnât help but focus on the way those words made him feelâlike this was something more than just friends hanging out. He refused to dwell too long on that impossible fantasy, though, and instead rolled his eyes at the boy in front of him. âOh no, thatâs so tragic! Whatever will I do now?? Oh, thatâs right! Buy my own like I was going to do anyway.â
Richie seemed to deflate a little at Eddieâs comment, but he continued to chuckle lightly, the playful look in his eyes changing to something Eddie wasnât sure he could properly decipher. âWas it disappointment? Nah, couldnât be.â
Even so, the change in behavior worried Eddie and he frowned, eyebrows furrowed as his hand reached out to grasp the other boyâs. Before he could get a chance to ask what was wrong, he jumped at the sound of their waitress finally coming up to their table, smiling and unaware of the growing tensionâif you could call it thatâbetween the two of them.
âYour usuals again tonight boys?â she asked with a grin on her face, not bothering to take out her order pad.
Before Eddie could respond, Richie winked at her, handed back their menus, and said, âYou got it, Linda!â. With one last smile, the waitress nodded and left just as quickly as she came, once again leaving them alone.
Eddie played with the straw in his cup, staring at it as if it was the most fascinating thing in the world. He was unwilling to look Richie in the eyes, not yet. If he didnât look, he could pretend for one second more that this was an actual dateâthat Richie had ordered for him like heâd seen men do for women millions of times in the romantic movies Bev would often force them all to watch.
âThought you wanted something different,â Richieâs teasing tone made Eddie snap his head up and stare at the curly-haired boy in surprise.
âI- well, you kind of went ahead and ordered for me,â he defended, a pout once again beginning to form on his face.
âRelaaaax Eds, Iâm just...just messing around,â Richie said as he put his hands out in front of himself in defense. âNo need to get your panties in a- I mean, yeah, sorry, I just figured youâd prefer your usual, jokes aside.â
Richie sounded nervous now. Eddie could feel something different, something that had changed in his attitude towards Eddie. He was trying to be playful with him, a tamer version of his usual self. âJokes asideâ kept repeating in Eddieâs head until suddenly, it clicked, and he realized that Richie had not made a single mom joke that night. In fact, he hadnât called him anything other than Eds, which was something he was surprised he hadn't picked up on earlier.
Eddie ignored this revelation and continued to talk and laugh with Richie as usual. They talked about their friends, schoolâanything and everything reallyâas if nothing between them had changed. Well, really, nothing had changed. Eddie noticing Richieâs less than normal behavior didnât mean anything had changed at all. Eddie knew that change would only happen once one of them actually acknowledged what was going on tonight. âGod, how many times will the word change cross my mind tonight?â
They sipped on their milkshakes, their usual after dinner ritual, as the conversation between them finally died down. Suddenly, Eddie wasnât sure what to say or how to act. This was typically the part where they would share their drinks, mixing Richieâs chocolate and Eddieâs strawberry to create what Richie called their special ChocoBerry Milkshakesâą.
Eddie smiled at the memory of the day this tradition started, remembering the way heâd told Richie how much he hated that name. âIâm such a fucking liar,â he thought to himself as he peaked over at Richie.
Eddie loved it. He loved whenever Richie made something their thing, something they could both share and call their own. He, however, would never admit that to Richie, not in a million years. As Richie looked up from his own drink, Eddie averted his eyes, pretending to find the salt shaker on the table very interesting.
âWhatâs up Eds?â Richie questioned as he lightly nudged Eddieâs ankle with his foot. âYour face looks like youâre constipated, which usually means youâre worrying about something.â
âIâm notââ Eddie paused, attempting to relax his face as he nudged back at Richieâs foot with his own. âIâm fine, justânothing. Itâs nothing.â
Eddie could feel the way Richie was staring at him, willing him to look at him. When he wouldnât, Richie grabbed Eddieâs milkshake and dumped it into his own glass. Eddie didnât respond, despite his annoyance, and continued to stare at the salt shaker on the table. âYouâre really not going to tell me whatâs wrong?â Richie asked as he began to mix the contents of his glass. âThis is the worst dââ
At Richieâs words, Eddieâs eyes snapped up to look at him. His heart began to race as his mind began to repeat the word he was hoping Richie had been about to say. âDate...Date...Date? Just fucking ask him. Why is that so hard for you to do?â He struggled with himself for a moment, debating whether he should just lay it all out and ask the question that could change everything between them.
âRichieâŠâ Eddie began as he continued to look at Richieâs face, now the one willing him to look over and meet his gaze. Richieâs cheeks were slightly flushed as he refused to do so, continuing to mix the milkshake in his glass. Eddie huffed, rolling his eyes and grabbing the straw from his now empty glass. Without further thought, before he could chicken out, he suddenly got up from the table, finally getting Richieâs attention.
Eddie watched carefully as Richie drew in a sharp breath and stood still, gradually raising his head to meet Eddie's eyes. He could see the way Richie was debating what to say, could see the way he was leaning towards making a joke he knew could have the potential to anger Eddie and make him drop the subject.
This time though, this time it wouldn't work because Eddie was determined. Determined to get an answer to the question that had been eating away at him since he first realized Richie had been acting differently. He reached out, fingers softly grazing the hand Richie was using to hold onto the milkshake glass. He could feel the way Richieâs hand twitched, shocked at the contact, before he gripped the glass a little tighter. âWhy, are you going to pay if I say it is?â
Eddie smiled wide at this, bringing his free hand up to cover his mouth as he began to laugh. âExcuse me? Youâre the one that said you were going to buy me a milkshake earlier!â
âOh, so you want this to be a date so Iâll pay?â Richie shot back as he grinned at Eddie. He was no longer nervous, and Eddie sighed in relief at this.
âCome on Rich,â Eddie pleaded, looking at him fondly. âAnswer the Question. Please.â
âI mean, yeah Iââ Richie sighed as he ran his hand through his unruly hair. âYeah, itâs a date.â
âOkay.â Eddie said simply, pulling the glass closer to himself and taking a sip of the mixed milkshake.
âOkay?â Richie questioned, staring at Eddieâs hand which was still holding on to his around the milkshake. âWhat the fuck does that mean?â
âIt means okay,â Eddie shrugged with a soft smile on his lips. âIt means this is officially a date, if you still want it to be.â
âOf course I do Eds!â He said excitedly, scooting closer to Eddie. Richie smiled at him and Eddie could feel the fluttering feeling of butterflies in his stomach. He loved this Richie. This happy over the moon Richie that got so excited that he would start rambling and fidgeting with uncontrollable energy. He loved this Richie that seemed so genuinely happy to be on a date with him, that got so flustered over asking him on a date in the first place.
He loved Richie. He had always loved Richie. As a friend, as something more. Eddie knew Richie loved him too, he just didnât realize that it was as more than best friends. As they both finished up the milkshake, Eddie couldnât help but wonder how things would be from now on. âAre we boyfriends now? Should I ask?â
Eddieâs thoughts were interrupted when he felt an arm snake itâs way around his shoulders, pulling him close to the boy beside him. âYouâre doing it again. The thinking.â
âItâs what people usually do,â Eddie joked. âI know you donât do it often but it is a thing peopleââ
Eddieâs words were cut short as Richie gently grabbed his chin, tilting his head towards him. His eyes widened as Richieâs face got closer and closer before Richie suddenly paused and said, âIs...Is this ok?â
He didnât respond, only smiled at Richie before moving forward until their lips met in a gentle andâdespite Richieâs chapped lipsâsoft kiss. He smiled into it and Richie pulled back, still holding on to his chin as he looked into his eyes, making Eddieâs stomach flip.
Before Eddie could say anything, the sound of a throat clearing made both of them jump and pull away. Linda stood there, wide grin on her face as she held the check out to both of them. Richie reached over to take it and as he did, Eddie used it as an opportunity to get impossibly closer to Richie and whisper in his ear, âSo, youâre paying for this date then right?â

âŹâMy hoodie looks comfy on you.â
=====
Patty walked quickly as she stuffed her hands into the pockets of her coat. She cursed the weather, threatening it as if doing so would make the snow stop falling from the sky.Â
âGod I hate winter so fucking much.â She grumbled, reluctantly pulling her hand out of her pocket to open the door of the coffee shop she had finally arrived at.âSnow can kiss my ass!â
âHello to you too Patty Cake!â Richie smiled at her sweetly as he waved her over from his place in line.
She ignored the glares of the people lined up behind Richie as she moved to stand next to him. âI canât believe you made me walk through all that snow just so you could have an excuse to sit here and make eyes at the guy you have a crush on without looking creepy!â
Richie shushed her, frantically looking over at the register to make sure that the guy in question hadnât heard her a word sheâd just said. âPatty! Donât blow my cover! Iâm desperate here!â
âYeah yeah, I know.â She huffed as she looked up at the menu. âYouâre buying by the way. You owe me that much.â
âIâll even throw in a pastry, as a treat.â Richie reassured her, as they slowly moved to the front of the line. âBy the way, my hoodie looks comfy on you.â
âReminding me that this is your hoodie isnât going to make me give it back to you.â Patty said, rolling her eyes at him.
âNice try!â Said a voice in front of them, causing them both to turn and look wide-eyed at none other than Richieâs coffee shop crush. âYouâre never getting that back from your girlfriend. Just save yourself the trouble and admit defeat right now.â
Patty looked between Richie and his cute coffee shop crush and couldnât help but laugh as Richie began to blush furiously. This was such a disaster and she loved being there to experience it in person. Her best friend had just single handedly ruined his own chances with the guy heâd been crushing on by making him think they were together.
Taking mercy on Richie, she spoke up first. âNo way, weâre not together. Iâm too good for him.â
Eddie smiled at her politely as he began to apologize. âSorry, I didnât mean to assume!â
âDonât worry about it.â She waved him off as she leaned against the counter. She pointed back at Richie, winking as she said, âYouâre more his type anyway.âÂ
âPatty!â Richie hissed, elbowing her out of the way. âIgnore her please, she thinks sheâs so funny. Can we get two peppermint hot chocolates please?âÂ
âS-sure yeah, of course!â Eddie mumbled, avoiding eye contact with Richie. Patty smiled as she watched the way they interacted with each other, shaking her head at how dumb both of them were. They were obviously into each other and they were both too oblivious to see it.
âHey what about my pastry?â Patty asked as they moved over to the side to wait for their drinks. âYou promised me something sweet Tozier!â
âThat was before you went and hit on Eddie for me while I was standing right there!â Richie scoffed, crossing his arms defensively.
âUh?? Youâre welcome??â She shot back, kicking him lightly on the shin. âHe thought we were together! At least now he knows youâre single AND that youâre into dudes.â
Richie sighed, dropping his arms and hanging his head in defeat. âYouâre right, thank you sugar plum. I donât know what Iâd do without you.â
âYouâd be a disaster without me and you know it.â Patty teased, nudging him playfully with her elbow. âWell, more of a disaster than you already are.â
âHahaha very funny!â Richie said before moving to get their drinks from the pick up counter. He pointed towards an empty table and Patty followed, sighing in relief as she took a seat. âSo, do you think I still have a chance?â
She took a sip of her hot chocolate as she peeked over at Eddie, who quickly looked away from them. Patty chuckled as she took another sip before responding, âI think you should go get in line again and get me that pastry and find out for yourself.â
âWhereâd you get that? How much money did you waste this time?â

Eddie sat on his porch, chin resting on his hand as he tapped his foot impatiently. He rolled his eyes as he checked his watch and let out a loud sigh. 5:15 p.m. Richie was late. This was their first date and he was late.Â
Maybe heâs just running lateâŠThis is Richie after allâŠ
He nodded to himself, thinking how very likely the idea of Richie running late was. Richie was never on time to anything. Whether it be days at the quarry or even his own birthday party, Richie was never one to be on time. In fact, it had come to the point where the losers would even tell Richie a different start time just so he would get to things they all planned on time.Â
Iâll wait 15 more minutes. Heâs probably on his way right now. Just 15 more minutes.
It was 6:30 p.m. when Eddie decided that maybe, just maybe, Richie wasnât going to come. He stood up, brushing the bottom of his shorts off before turning back towards his front door. As he turned the knob on the door, he felt a sharp pain in his chest.
âI should have known he was messing around.â Eddie sighed as he opened his door and stepped in. âOf course he wasnât serious about this. Of course it was a joke.â
Eddie made his way to his living room and as he plopped down on the couch, he was grateful that his mom was gone for the evening. He didnât want her to see him. He didnât want anyone to see the way his lip trembled and the way his eyes were scrunched up in an attempt to keep the tears threatening to pour form his eyes at bay.Â
He took deep breaths, willing himself to calm down. His mind wouldnât let him though. Thoughts of Richie calling him âhis loveâ and âcuteâ as he pinched his cheeks plagued his mind, aggravating the pain he felt in his chest.Â
You should have known better than to take one of his stupid jokes seriously.
He rubbed at his eyes, seconds away from falling apart at the realization that this was all just a joke to Richie. He didnât mean any of the words heâd said to Eddie and he never would.
Great. This is great, actually. I donât have to keep hoping, wishing, that heâd like me back. This is just the wake up call I needed. I finally know Richie will never-
A frantic knock at his door interrupted his thoughts, making him jump in surprise. He checked his watch again, reading 7:05 p.m., and squinted at the door. As he stood up and made his way to the door, he willed himself not to get his hopes up, not to think that the person on the other side of the door would be Richie.Â
Eddie opened the door cautiously, quickly stepping aside when Richie pushed and stumbled his way in, a giant, red monkey cradled in his arms. âHey Eds, sorry Iâm late!â
âWhereâd you get that?â Eddie completely ignored Richieâs comment as he pointed at the monkey, making a face at the bright red color of the fur. There was only one place he could have gotten that, Eddie knew that, he didnât even have to ask. âHow much money did you waste this time?â
âListen,â Richie began as he walked towards Eddieâs living room and dumped the monkey on the sofa. He turned towards Eddie and held onto his hand, looking at him with wide eyes. âThatâs not important right now. Whatâs important is that I apologize.â
âFor what?â Eddie asked, feigning ignorance. They both knew what this was about, but he wasnât going to let him off the hook that easily. Richie had taken this joke to far, and for that Eddie would make him plead for forgiveness.Â
âWhat do you mean for what?â Richie furrowed his eyebrow in confusion, as he stepped closer to Eddie. âOur date, remember? Iâm really fucking late!â
âOh, you were serious?â Eddie asked, folding his arms defensively as he looked away. âI thought it was just a joke. Like all the other times.â
âWhat-No Eds I-â Richie stuttered as he worked to find the right words to say. He was panicking now, Eddie could see that clearly. He peered back over at him, raising his eyebrow and tilting his head at Richie as if to say âexplain yourselfâ.
âI-I was at the arcade-â
âNo shit, I couldnât tell.â Eddie scoffed as he pointedly looked at the monkey.
âI was at the arcade,â Richie began again, as he looked at Eddie with pleading eyes, begging him to listen. âbecause there was something I absolutely had to win.â
âSo you ditched me, making me think you stood me up just so you could win a stupid stuffed animal that probably cost you all of your money??â
âFuck-No Eds!â Richie said as he pulled a reluctant Eddie towards him, hugging him as closely as Eddie would allow. Eddie could feel the way Richieâs heart was beating fast and wondered if it was from nerves or something else. âI was trying to win something for you.â
âIf itâs that monkey, I donât want it.â Eddie said as he let himself relax into Richieâs arms. He buried his head in the soft fabric of Richieâs shirt and closed his eyes. As much as he wanted to stay mad at Richie, the fact that he had been late, not because he had forgotten about their date or because it was a joke, but because he had been trying to get something for Eddie, put him at ease. This was real. Richie was here, holding him and telling him everything he wanted to hear, had been hoping to hear.Â
âDonât say that about our son Eds.â Richie scolded as he gently pulled away from Eddie. Richie looked at him with a huge smile, and Eddie felt as if he could melt. At his words, at the way he was looking at Eddie with the fondest expression he had ever seen on Richie.
âOh, we have a son now? I donât remember agreeing to that.â Eddie teased, matching Richieâs smile with one of his own. âThereâs no ring on my finger so I refuse to believe this child is mine.â
âOk, first of all, that doesnât make sense.â Richie laughed as Eddie punched him lightly on the arm, a whispered âshut upâ escaping his lips. âYou donât have to be married to someone to have kids with them.â
âI know, I was just jok-â
âSecond of all,â Richie interrupted him, refusing to let him play off his joke. âIf a ring is what you want, does this work for you?â
Richie reached into his pocket, pulling out a chunky rhinestone ring, and presented it to Eddie on one knee. Eddieâs eyes widened at this, cheeks flushing at the sight before him.
âWhat the hell Richie!â Exclaimed Eddie as he continued to stare at the ring presented to him. âWe havenât even had our first date yet.â
âYeah, wellâŠâ Richie grinned at him, that fond expression once again making itâs way back onto his face as if it was reserved only for Eddie. âWhen have you ever known me to do anything in the proper order anyway?âÂ

He finds it in the library. The book is tucked between a couple of self-help books that Mike told him he should look into reading. Itâs out of placeâdoesnât belong thereâbut the title peaks his curiosity. How to Bring Someone Back from the Dead. He grabs the spine of the book and gently holds it in his hand, inspecting it. Thereâs no author, no other information, just a title and a short dedication of sorts on the first page. âFor those that have hope still lingering in their heartsâŠâ He looks around, making sure no one is watching him before he swiftly hides the small book in the pocket of his jacket.
The book stays hidden in his pocket for the rest of the day while he thinks about what to do with it. Every now and then, heâll find himself checking to make sure itâs still there. As his fingers gently stroke the mysterious book, he finds himself thinking of Eddie. Ever since that heartbreaking night in the underbelly of the Neibolt house, his thoughts have been of nothing else but the man he had loved. Still loved. Despite being gone, Richieâs heart refuses to let go. It was almost as if he still had...Hope.
He gasps, fingers clutching onto the bookâtoo afraid that it would disappear if he dared to let it goâas the word echoes continuously in his head. Hope. He couldnât explain it, wouldnât even question it. All Richie knew was that finding this book was definitely no accident. It couldnât be. The timing was too...He shakes his head, pushing images of a dying Eddie out of his mind before they could overwhelm him. Instead, he focuses all his energy on getting to the townhouse, rushing up the stairs and locking the door of his room behind him.
Richie allows himself a moment to breath, to close his eyes and will his heart to calm down. He gently takes the book out of his pocket as he sits down on his bed, opening it up and turning to the first page. He scans all the words, but he canât help but focus on two lines in particular. âMake sure that it wasnât their time to die. If it was, do not try to bring them back.â He thinks about this until itâs time to meet up with Mike for dinner. He thinks about it as they eat together and Richie inadvertently ignores all the questions Mike throws at him in an attempt to stave off the awkward silence growing between them.
âRich! Hey man, whatâs going on with you today?â
Richie blinks, suddenly remembering where he is and who heâs with. He looks sheepishly up at his friend as he sets down his fork. He wants to tell Mike about the book. He wants so desperately for someone to tell him that he isnât going crazy and that this book is indeed a second chance. A second chance at happiness with Eddie. He doesnât though, not directly at least.
âBack at Neibolt house, when...you knowâŠâ He begins, unsure of how to ask the question. âDo you think it was his time to die?â
Mike looks back at him with a worried expression on his face, one that makes Richie bow his head and blush. He shouldnât have asked. He should know that questions like this only lead to talks of getting âprofessionalâ help. A talk he was tired of having not only with Mike, but with his other friends as well. He needs time. Thatâs what he tells them. He needs time to grieve and process the fact that Eddie is gone. Going to see a therapist would mean accepting that Eddie was gone, and he wasnât ready for that, not just yet. Especially not after finding that book today.
âI thinkâŠâ Mike sighs as he tries to find the best way to word whatever heâs about to tell him. âI think that no one deserved to die because of that fucking clown. Not Eddie. Not Stan. Not any of his victims. I donât know if it was his time to die, no one can ever really be sure when itâs their time, Richie. But, I do believe that Eddie was taken from us too soon.â
After dinner, he throws himself on his bed, staring up at the ceiling as he mulls over Mikeâs words. âNo one can ever really be sure when itâs their time,â he says to himself as he considers going through with trying to bring Eddie back. Heâs been in Derry for almost six monthsâspent Christmas and New Years with Mikeâthat the townhouse has basically become his home. He hasnât thought about when he would leave and dodges the question whenever it happens to come up in conversation with one of the others.
He takes the book in his hand and lifts it above him, staring at the cover as he slowly begins to smile. He finds himself once again thinking about how maybe all of this was meant to be. How staying in Derry for months after everything went down lead to the discovery of this book in his hands. There had to be a reason. That reason, he thinks, is a second chance at saving Eddie. Determined, he gets up, flipping through the book until he gets to the page heâs looking for. He reads over the words carefully, pulling out his phone and making a list of everything heâll need.
You will need two coats, a quarter, a white rose, a blanket, a flashlight, extra batteries, lots of food and water, and an object of importance to the deceased (a necklace, a beloved book, etc).
He takes into consideration how easy it will be to get each of the items on the list. The rose and food would have to be bought closer to his departure, but the others things he could start gathering now. Itâs the last part that has him faltering as he digs through his pockets in search of a quarter. âAn object of importance to the deceased.â Richieâs eyebrows furrow as he racks his brain about what could have possibly been an item of importance to Eddie, what he could possibly use. He thinks about Eddieâs inhaler, how he always had an attachment to it, but then realizes that itâs gone. Charred and buried underneath the Neibolt house.
His heart sinks at the realization that this journey may not be possible, before it suddenly hits him. The ring. Richie jumps out of his bead, tripping repeatedly as he makes his way to his suitcase. Digging through it, he cheers triumphantly as he finds what heâs looking for. Itâs a clunky ruby ring, one that looks like itâs seen better days. Richie noticed Eddie never took off untilâŠthat night. It was reminiscent of the Captain Midnight ring that Eddie wore when they were younger. Richie had given him that ring, he remembered that quite clearly. The way Eddieâs face lit up as Richie presented him with the prize was something he thought he would never forget. He did, but that wasnât his fault. The further away he got from Derry, the more he began to forget, until Eddie had completely slipped from his memory.
Eddie never took that ring off, had treasured it as if it were a real ruby ring Richie had given him. He didnât think anything of it back then, ignored the way his stomach fluttered at the thought of Eddie treasuring something he had given him so deeply. The fact that Eddie had continued to wear a ruby ring as an adult, even if it wasnât the same ring Richie had given him, had to mean something. This is it, he decides. This is Eddieâs object of importance.
