#dhmis time

In part of the song, when there are inexplicably fish everywhere, the three guys take turns listing specific times. At first I was examining the times to see if they have any meaning (I don’t think they do), but then I realized that the way each character phrases their statement(s) of time reflects something about that character.

First, here is a list of all the times mentioned, in order, and who they were mentioned by:

Quarter to 8 (Duck)

20 past day (Yellow Guy)

11 to 12 (Duck)

9:30 (Red Guy)

Okay, let’s starts with Duck. The two times he mentions are “quarter to 8,” meaning 7:45, and “11 to 12,” meaning 11:49. Now I don’t know about y’all, but I rarely hear anyone under the age of 60 refer to time by saying “quarter to” or the like. That kind of phrasing is something generally associated with old people.

Yellow Guy’s time is a bit more confusing. I’m not sure exactly what “20 past day” means. 20 minutes after sunrise? After sunset? A vague reference to June 20th? In the end, I decided that it’s probably supposed to be confusing and nonsensical. This is a theme with Yellow’s character– he is naive and often doesn’t get things quite right. You might say that he’s childlike in this way.

And what about Red Guy? Well, 9:30 is how most people I know would denote that time. Plain and simple, like you’re reading it off a digital clock. To me this sounds like the way an adult– perhaps particularly young adults– would speak about time.

Now i made him kinda like a circus ringmaster/clown so that's why his cheeks, lower lip and eyebrows are painted yellow (and his whole face blue lol)
